Asana plans are the tiers in which Asana, Inc. sells its work management service, and seats are the End User licences counted against each paid plan. Under the Subscriber Terms, fees are “based on annual periods (or pro rata portions of annual periods)” unless the Order Form says otherwise. “Subscriptions are sold in set increments based on the number of End Users and other units of measurement and subscription size.”[4] Self-serve customers can choose monthly or yearly billing.[6] A subscription is made of a tier, a seat count, optional add-ons and optional usage packs.[2] Catalog proof: Subscriptions are sold in set End User increments.
Editions
Personal
Asana Personal is the free tier, “For one or two people managing personal projects”.[1] It includes “up to 2 seats per project and team”, unlimited projects and tasks, and list, board and calendar views. It does not include Asana AI, AI Studio, timeline, workflow builder or reporting dashboards.[5] A legacy Personal plan with up to 10 seats “is being phased out”, and accounts on it may be asked to upgrade or reduce to two seats.[5] Catalog proof: Personal plan allows up to 2 seats per project and team.
Starter and Advanced
Asana Starter costs USD 10.99 per user per month billed annually, or USD 13.49 billed monthly. Asana Advanced costs USD 24.99 billed annually, or USD 30.49 billed monthly.[1] Starter has “No user seat limits”, timeline and Gantt views, reporting dashboards, unlimited automations, forms, custom fields and “Unlimited free guests”. Advanced adds portfolios, goals, resource management, approvals and proofing, time tracking and Salesforce, Tableau and Power BI integrations.[1] Both include AI Teammates, Asana Dash and AI Studio Basic with included usage. The usage rules are covered in Asana AI requests and AI Studio credits.
Enterprise and Enterprise+
Asana Enterprise is priced on request. It adds SAML, SCIM user provisioning, capacity planning, service accounts, view-only licences, guest invitation permissions and project admin controls. Enterprise+ adds “advanced security, compliance, and governance including: SIEM integrations, Data residency, audit logs, and managed workspaces”.[1] Some Enterprise+ capabilities can also be bought as add-ons to Enterprise: Permissions management, Compliance management and Enterprise Key Management. For these, “The quantity of Customer’s Add-On Product End Users must equal Customer’s Asana Enterprise Subscription End Users.”[10] The Timesheets and Budgets add-on is available for Starter, Advanced and Enterprise.[1] Catalog proof: Enterprise add-on End Users must match Enterprise End Users.
Legacy tiers
Customers who bought before the current tiers may hold Premium, Business or Legacy Enterprise subscriptions. The Help Center describes Premium as “one of Asana’s legacy tiers”.[9] The seat bucket rules apply “to Starter and Advanced plans as well as legacy Premium and Business plans”.[3]
Metrics
The seat is the End User (seat): “any individual who is authorized by Customer to use the Services under Customer’s account”.[4] The Help Center also calls it a licence: the seat count “is also referred to as the number of licenses”.[2] Enterprise tiers add the View only license for people who only need visibility.[8] Which people count, including the rules for guests, depends on where the subscription sits, as explained in Asana guests, members and workspaces.

|---|---|
| 2 to 5 | 1 |

Source: the pricing FAQ[1] and the Help Center.[3] “Built with collaboration in mind, Asana does not offer a 1-seat plan. Apart from the 2-, 3-, and 4-seat plans listed above, it is not possible to add a single seat to a subscription.”[2] A 31-person team therefore pays for 40 seats. See Seat buckets. Catalog proof: No one-seat paid plan.
Growth: automatic upgrade and true-forward
“An account exceeds its plan size when it has more internal users than the number of paid seats.” Billing owners see a banner and receive three emails: when the seat limit is near, when it is reached and when it is exceeded. Asana then resizes the plan automatically. “If the number of internal users on your account exceeds your account’s plan size, then you will be invoiced or charged for the seat bucket that corresponds to the actual number of internal users.”[3] For annual plans, the check runs on a monthly “effective renewal date” tied to the original signup day.[3] The contractual basis is §4.2 of the Subscriber Terms. Asana may count End Users periodically and invoice the excess increments “on a pro rata basis for the remaining period in Customer’s then-current subscription”.[4] This is a true-forward: no back-billing for past months, but the higher count applies for the rest of the term. See true-up. Catalog proof: Exceeding plan size triggers charge for the matching seat bucket; Excess End Users are invoiced pro rata for the rest of the term.
Pausing licences
Admins, super admins and billing owners can pause a member’s licence, “effectively reducing the number of paid seats by one”. The member keeps their data and work. The feature is available for paid organizations, not for divisions or workspaces. “The cap is set at 10% of the total subscription size.” A paused member who logs in again is reactivated: “If a paused user logs back in to their account, their paid license will automatically resume.”[7] Pausing therefore suits people on leave. It does not suit active occasional users, who reactivate themselves. See Pause a member’s license. Catalog proof: Paused licences are capped at 10% of subscription size.
View-only licences
View-only licences exist only on Enterprise and Enterprise+, and “are not available in divisions”. View-only users can see projects, tasks, goals, portfolios and reporting, be assigned tasks and search. They cannot create or edit, complete tasks, comment, use the mobile app or use integrations. To collaborate, “they will need to request a license to take up a paid seat”. View-only licences cannot be paused.[8] The pricing page describes them as a way to “Include more people in projects at lower cost”.[1] No public price is given. Catalog proof: View only licences are limited to Enterprise and Enterprise+.
Reductions, downgrades and cancellation
Seats can be added at any time. Reducing paid End Users or downgrading to a lower plan requires notice “at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the then-current Term”, and Asana applies the change on the Renewal Date.[4] The Help Center says the same about self-serve changes: a downgrade to Personal “will take effect at the end of your current subscription period”, and “All cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing cycle.”[6] Fees are “non-cancelable and non-refundable unless otherwise provided in this Agreement”.[4] The pricing FAQ states: “We do not offer refunds.”[1] After a downgrade to Personal, projects with more than two members, public projects and projects that use paid features become inaccessible until they are reduced or the plan is upgraded again.[5] Catalog proof: Seat reductions and downgrades only at renewal with 30 days' notice; Cancellations and downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle; Fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable.
Renewal
Unless the Order Form says otherwise, subscriptions “automatically renew at the end of the then-current Subscription Term” for a period equal to the prior one, “at Asana’s then-current rates”. Either party may give notice of non-renewal at least 30 days before the Renewal Date.[4] See Auto-renewal. Catalog proof: Subscriptions auto-renew at then-current rates.
Virtualization & partitioning
Not applicable. Seats are counted per person, not per device or server.[4]
Cloud / BYOL
Asana is only available as a hosted service, and there is no on-premises or bring-your-own-licence option.[1]
