TechSmith licensing is the set of terms under which TechSmith Corporation, of East Lansing, Michigan, licenses its screen capture and video software: principally Snagit and Camtasia Editor, together with Camtasia Audiate, Screencast, Camtasia Online and the Snagit and Camtasia asset libraries.[1] Since the release of Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025 on 2025-02-12, TechSmith sells Snagit and Camtasia only as annual subscriptions.[2][3] Earlier versions were sold as perpetual licences with an optional annual maintenance agreement. Maintenance agreements that were active on the transition date were converted into Legacy License Subscriptions.[3]
A single document, the Subscription End-User License Agreement for Snagit and Camtasia for Windows and Mac, governs current use. It is published in the TechSmith Trust Center and states “Effective Date: January 2026”.[1][4] The EULA grants a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited licence to access the software during the subscription term, conditional on payment of the subscription fees.[1] It distinguishes two kinds of subscription: the Individual Subscription, licensed to a single Authorized User, and the Enterprise Subscription, licensed for one or more Authorized Users in a business, government entity, non-profit or educational institution.[1] In TechSmith’s store and support material the Enterprise Subscription is sold as the Business License Subscription.[5]
TechSmith has rebranded the product family as the “Camtasia Suite”, in which Snagit appears as Camtasia Snagit.[4] From 2026-06-01 Snagit is included in Camtasia Business License Subscriptions at no additional cost.[6] Snagit is also included in the individual Camtasia plans.[7][8]

The individual Camtasia plans bundle several applications. Camtasia Starter includes Camtasia Editor with watermarked exports and Camtasia Snagit. Essentials adds full Camtasia Editor and core Audiate features, and Create adds Audiate’s AI features. Pro adds Screencast Pro and premium Assets.[8][12] TechSmith publishes US dollar list prices for these plans in the structured data on its Camtasia page: Starter USD 39.00, Essentials USD 179.88, Create USD 249.00 and Pro USD 599.00 per year.[12] The store shows Business License and Snagit prices in the visitor’s local currency, so this wiki does not record them. Catalog rows include Camtasia Pro - annual and Snagit Business - annual per user.
The plans are sold only to individuals and cannot be transferred. Organizations instead buy the component products (Camtasia, Audiate, Assets and Screencast Pro) as separate multi-seat subscriptions.[13][8] The plans are described in TechSmith Camtasia plans, Audiate, Screencast and Assets licensing.

Counting / floors
Individual Subscriptions (EULA effective 2026-01). An Individual Subscription may be installed on an unlimited number of devices, but the user may be signed in on only one device at a time and may use one version, platform and language at a time.[1] Catalog proof: Individual Subscription: unlimited installs, one signed-in device at a time.
Business License Subscriptions (EULA effective 2026-01). The software may be activated on only one device for each Authorized User seat purchased.[1] TechSmith support advises organizations to buy as many seats as they have users.[16] When a user is removed and deactivated, the seat may be re-provisioned to a replacement user.[1] Catalog proof: Enterprise Subscription: one activated device per Authorized User seat; Enterprise seats may be re-provisioned to a replacement user.
Perpetual licences (EULA effective 2024-01). A perpetual Snagit licence covers one copy on one Device for a single Authorized User, plus a second copy on a second Device for the same user. The two copies may never be used at the same time.[14] Activation enforces this: a single-user key can be used on up to two machines for the same user.[17] See TechSmith perpetual licences and Legacy License Subscriptions.
Floors and thresholds. None of the retrieved documents sets a minimum purchase. Volume discounts start at 10 subscriptions.[15] The online store sells Business licences for up to 99 users; larger quantities go through TechSmith sales.[9] Site licences are typically offered to organizations of about 100 employees or more.[18]
Tracking. TechSmith has no administrator portal for Snagit and Camtasia keys that shows who holds a licence or how many are in use. It states that the person in charge of deployment should track users against the number purchased.[19] A volume purchase receives one multi-user key that every user installs with.[20] Catalog proof: Customers must track Snagit and Camtasia key users themselves.
Online verification. Subscription use requires an internet connection every 90 days to confirm the subscription.[1] Business and Legacy licences can keep working after that point until the subscription expires. Offline activation is available for Business licences but not for Individual licences.[21][5]
Virtualization & partitioning
The EULA defines a Device as a physical or virtual computer hardware system, and it treats a hardware partition or blade as a Device.[1] The software is licensed as a single unit and may not be separated or virtualized across different Devices. Unless it is licensed separately, Snagit may not be separated from Camtasia and installed on another Device.[1]
Installation on an Internal Network server is allowed only for Authorized Users on Devices in the same network. The limit is the total number of Authorized Users able to use the software, not the number using it at the same time.[1] TechSmith supports Snagit on Remote Desktop Services, streamed applications and Citrix published desktops. In those environments a subscription must be bought for each user that will have access to the software at any time.[22][23] TechSmith does not recommend installing Camtasia Editor on a server.[22] The rules are covered in TechSmith Snagit and Camtasia subscription EULA.
Cloud / BYOL
TechSmith publishes no bring-your-own-licence rules for public clouds. Snagit and Camtasia remain desktop applications under the subscription model.[2] Server installations must stay inside the licensee’s Internal Network. Access from Devices outside that network, web-hosted workgroups or public services, and automated server processing are not permitted.[1] Camtasia Audiate and Screencast are cloud services with their own terms.[24][4]

TechSmith sells directly and through a global network of authorized resellers. Reseller pricing may vary.[28] Direct purchase orders must be in US dollars on net 30 day terms.[29] Purchases made directly from TechSmith can be refunded within 14 days. Transfer and compliance
Neither the software nor the licence may be assigned or transferred to a third party without TechSmith’s prior written consent. Software keys may not be posted or sold on auction sites or other public sites.[1] An Individual Subscription is linked to the email address used to buy it and cannot be transferred.[10] TechSmith collects installation and key data through a “call-home” system to prevent fraud and piracy, and the software contains technology that can block use when validation fails.[1] The EULA contains no clause giving TechSmith a right to inspect the licensee’s premises or records.[1] TechSmith does not sell its software in countries under U.S. embargo or comprehensive sanctions, and it does not sell or allow use of its software in Russia or Belarus.[31]
Support
Business License and Legacy License subscribers receive email, chat and phone support. Individual plans, apart from Camtasia Pro, receive email and chat support only.[32] Snagit 2024 and Camtasia Editor 2024 are supported until 2026-12-31 for customers without a Legacy License and until 2027-10-02 for customers with one.[2]
Out of scope
This article does not cover TechSmith Capture or TechSmith Fuse, which have their own EULAs.[4] It also does not cover the TechSmith Account terms or the privacy and AI policies.[4] Snagit 2024 and Camtasia 2024 bought through the Apple App Store or Amazon were perpetual versions and receive no updates beyond version 2024.[2] Localised prices outside the United States are not recorded.
