The TechSmith Snagit and Camtasia subscription EULA is the Subscription End-User License Agreement that governs Snagit and Camtasia for Windows and Mac. It is a binding agreement between TechSmith Corporation and the licensee: the entity or organization the buyer represents, or the buyer as an individual when no organization is named.[1] The version in the TechSmith Trust Center states “Effective Date: January 2026”.[1] It replaced an earlier subscription EULA dated January 2025[2], which accompanied the move to subscription-only licensing with the 2025 versions.[3] TechSmith support directs customers to the Trust Center page for the current Snagit and Camtasia EULA.[4]
The EULA grants “a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited license to access the Software during the term of your subscription”. The grant is conditional on payment of subscription fees and compliance with the EULA.[1] The term of the subscription is the one set out in the Order.[1] The EULA states that it is a licence and not a sale, and that no ownership rights pass to the licensee.[1]
Editions
The EULA recognises two subscription types.[1]
- Individual Subscription: “a subscription licensed to a single Authorized User”. In the store this covers Snagit Individual and the Camtasia plans (Starter, Essentials, Create and Pro). Users sign in to a TechSmith account and receive no software key.[5]
- Enterprise Subscription: “a subscription licensed for one or more Authorized Users in a business or other commercial entity, government entity, non-profit organization, or educational institution”. TechSmith sells it as the Business License Subscription, licensed per user and unlocked with a software key.[1][5]
The EULA defines an Order as ancillary documentation agreed between TechSmith and an organizational licensee, such as a site licence addendum, amendment or quotation. An Order may set the number of Authorized Users, the term, or other conditions of use.[1] The EULA and all applicable Orders form the entire agreement.[1]
Metrics
The EULA’s counting unit is the Authorized User. The Authorized User is the buyer where the buyer licensed the software as an individual, or else “the named individuals who have been provided with a right to use and access the Software” within the licensee’s organization. The licensee is liable for the acts and omissions of its Authorized Users.[1] Catalog row: Authorized User.
A Device is “a computer hardware system (whether physical or virtual) with a storage device or a mobile device capable of running the Software”, and a hardware partition or blade counts as a Device.[1] The EULA uses Device to limit installations and activations, not as a sales metric. TechSmith’s licensing grid lists the Individual licence as licensed per named user and the Business licence as licensed per user, each with one activation per user.[5] Catalog rows: Individual Subscription and Enterprise Subscription seat (Business License).
Counting / floors
Individual Subscription (effective 2026-01)
Section 4.1 allows an Individual Subscription to be installed on an unlimited number of devices. The user may be signed in on only one device at a time and may use one version on one platform in one language at a time, not simultaneously.[1] Access credentials may not be lent, rented, leased, licensed, distributed or transferred to another user.[1] TechSmith support confirms that an Individual Subscription is linked to the email address used to buy it and is not transferable.[6] Catalog proof: Individual Subscription: unlimited installs, one signed-in device at a time; Individual Subscriptions are tied to the purchasing email and not transferable.
Enterprise (Business License) Subscription (effective 2026-01)
The software “may be activated on only one device for each Authorized User seat purchased”, and each Authorized User may use only one version, platform and language at a time.[1] When a current user is removed from the subscription and deactivated, the licensee may re-provision the seat to a replacement user. Otherwise credentials may not be transferred.[1] TechSmith’s Camtasia team store page states that one activation of the business licence is assigned per user and that the licence can only be used on one machine at a time.[7] Support says that a user who installs on another machine and runs out of activations can clear activations by uninstalling from the earlier machine. It adds that TechSmith provides “some buffer activations”.[8] Catalog proof: Enterprise Subscription: one activated device per Authorized User seat; Business License: buy as many seats as users; Enterprise seats may be re-provisioned to a replacement user.
Organizations using volume licences receive one multi-user key. TechSmith asks customers to monitor use against the number of licences purchased.[9] No administrator portal shows who is assigned to a Snagit or Camtasia key or how many seats are in use, so the deployer must track current users.[10] For an effective licence position, the entitlement is therefore the seat count on the Order or renewal invoice. Consumption is the list of named users the organization maintains. The activation count on each device is not visible to the customer. Catalog proof: One multi-user key is issued for volume licences; Customers must track Snagit and Camtasia key users themselves.
Online verification
Section 3 requires the software to connect to the internet once every 90 days to confirm the subscription. If more than 90 days pass, access is disabled until the device connects again.[1] TechSmith support describes different behaviour by licence type. An Individual licence can be offline for at most 90 days, and the period resets each time the device reconnects. A Business or Legacy License installation that has not reached the activation server after 90 days shows a prompt, and choosing “Ask Me Later” lets it run until the subscription expires.[11] Offline activation, in which an activation code is generated on a connected device, is available for key-based licences.[12][5] Catalog proof: Subscription software must verify online every 90 days; Business or Legacy License keeps working after 90 days offline until expiry.
Server distribution and backup
The licensee may copy an image of the software onto file servers within its Internal Network to download and install it onto devices in the same network.[1] A reasonable number of backup copies is allowed for archival purposes only.[1] TechSmith’s deployment resources provide MSI installers and a deployment tool that can embed the software key, disable features and set update behaviour. User accounts are not required for MSI deployments.[13]
Virtualization & partitioning
Section 4.4 allows the software to be installed on an Internal Network only for use by an Authorized User from a Device within the same network. “The total number of Authorized Users (not the concurrent number of Authorized Users at any given time)” able to use it may not exceed the number purchased.[1] The EULA therefore does not allow concurrent-user counting on terminal servers or VDI. TechSmith’s support guidance agrees: when Snagit runs on Remote Desktop, streamed applications or Citrix published desktops, a subscription must be bought for each user who will have access at any time.[14][15] TechSmith does not recommend installing Camtasia Editor on a server.[14] Catalog proof: Internal Network use counts total, not concurrent, Authorized Users; Virtual environments need a subscription for every user with access.
The same section excludes installation of or access to the software from Devices outside the Internal Network, for web-hosted workgroups or public services, and as a component of a system, workflow or service accessible by more users than licensed. It also excludes operations not initiated by an individual Authorized User, such as automated server processing.[1] Catalog proof: No public hosting or automated server processing.
Section 4.2 licenses the software and its embedded components as a single unit that may not be separated or virtualized and installed on different Devices. Unless it is licensed separately, Snagit may not be separated from Camtasia and installed on a different Device.[1] Section 4.7 limits deployment to one environment, platform, operating system, language or medium on a single Device at a time.[1] Because virtual machines, hardware partitions and blades are Devices, each one counts towards the activation limit.[1] Catalog proof: Software licensed as a single unit; Snagit not separable from Camtasia; Virtual machines, hardware partitions and blades are Devices.
Cloud / BYOL
The EULA contains no provision for hosting the software on public cloud infrastructure for third parties. Use is limited to the licensee’s internal purposes, and rental, time sharing, hosting, lending, sublicensing, distribution and leasing are prohibited.[1] Optional online features are covered by addenda. The Snagit Sharing Feature is subject to the third-party destination’s terms and can be disabled by administrators. The Camtasia upload feature grants TechSmith a licence to process uploaded content as needed to provide the feature.[1] Library Content, including Shutterstock and Storyblocks material, is licensed only for use within content created with the software and may not be used or redistributed on its own.[1]
Programs
Transfer
Section 5(d) prohibits assigning or transferring the software or licence to a third party without TechSmith’s prior written consent, and an approved transferee must agree in writing to the EULA.[1] Where an Order licenses two or more Authorized Users, such as a site licence, the organization may move an individual licence from a user who no longer uses the software to a new user, provided the total does not increase.[1] Section 5(e) forbids copying, distributing or posting software keys on online auction sites or any other public site without written permission. Transfers that breach it are void.[1] Catalog proof: No licence transfer to a third party without written consent; Software keys may not be posted or sold on auction or public sites.
Compliance and termination
Section 6 describes a “call-home” system that collects the number of downloads and installations, IP address, computer and session ID, and installed licence keys to prevent fraud and piracy. The software also contains technology that may block use if the validation, installation or licence management process is not followed.[1] The EULA gives TechSmith no right to audit the customer’s premises or records. Enforcement relies on activation technology, termination and injunctive relief.[1] TechSmith may terminate the EULA for non-compliance. Acceptance, amendment and law
Paying the fee without requesting a refund within 14 days, or installing or using the software, indicates acceptance of the EULA.[1] TechSmith may amend the EULA by posting a new version on its website. Continued use after the amendment’s effective date confirms consent.[1] The software carries a 90-day limited warranty, and TechSmith’s liability is capped at the licence fees paid for the software that gave rise to the claim.[1] The EULA is governed by Michigan law, with courts in Ingham County as the venue. United States government entities that cannot accept these terms are bound by federal law.[1] Catalog proof: TechSmith may amend the EULA by posting a new version.
Out of scope
Perpetual licences, maintenance and Legacy License Subscriptions are covered in TechSmith perpetual licences and Legacy License Subscriptions. Site licences and volume pricing are in TechSmith volume, site and education licensing. Camtasia Audiate has separate terms of service.[16] Export control and sanctions are addressed in section 10 and in TechSmith’s list of countries where its software cannot be used.[1][17]
