Notion AI and Notion credits

This article is about how Notion licenses Notion AI: inclusion in the Business and Enterprise plans, the usage allowance, complimentary responses on Free and Plus, the legacy Notion AI add-on, and Notion credits for Custom Agents, Workers and premium models. For seat billing see Notion seat billing and true-ups.

On This Page

Notion AI is the set of artificial-intelligence features in Notion: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research Mode, AI blocks, translation, image generation and database autofill.[2] Notion credits are the usage units Notion introduced to meter AI and automation work that is not covered by a seat, chiefly Custom Agents, Workers and premium AI models.[4] Licensing works in two layers. Notion AI comes with each member seat on the Business and Enterprise plans, subject to a usage allowance. Notion credits are a separate, pooled add-on governed by the Notion AI and Notion Credit Supplementary Terms.[2][1]

The supplementary terms “form a part of” both the Personal Use Terms of Service and the Master Subscription Agreement (MSA). They apply to “Notion Credits, any Notion AI feature(s) and, if applicable, your Notion AI Add-on Subscription”.[1] The April 2026 MSA update added the usage-based credit terms. It took effect immediately for new customers and on 2026-05-01 for existing customers.[15] Catalog proof: April 2026 MSA update applied to existing customers from 2026-05-01.

Complimentary responses on Free and Plus

“Everyone can try Notion AI for free.” Once the complimentary responses are used up, an upgrade to Business or Enterprise is needed.[11] Every AI action that returns a response counts, in Notion or Notion Mail, “Anytime you click Try again, that counts as an additional AI response.”[11] Upgrading from Free to Plus does not renew the trial usage.[17] Notion does not publish the number of complimentary responses. Catalog rows: AI response (complimentary); Every AI response and retry counts against the free trial.

The legacy Notion AI add-on

The current pricing page sells Notion AI only inside Business and Enterprise. The supplementary terms still refer to a “Notion AI Add-on Subscription” where applicable.[1] The pricing page source still carries price records for an AI add-on: ai_add_on_standard_monthly_10 and ai_add_on_standard_yearly_96, that is, USD 10 per month or USD 96 per year.[12] The change-plan help still describes an owner approving “Upgrade AI” requests from members.[17] Notion publishes no current terms for buying the add-on on Plus. A licence reviewer should therefore treat an existing AI add-on line on an invoice as a legacy entitlement and confirm its scope with Notion. Catalog row: Notion AI add-on (legacy).

Metrics

Usage allowance

Business and Enterprise include a usage allowance “for certain Notion AI features”. It is measured in “A six-hour window” and “A monthly window”. If the allowance is used up, those features pause until the window refreshes.[3] The allowance covers the personal Notion Agent (including chat), image generation and page translation. It does not cover AI Meeting Notes, which has its own 10-hour daily cap, or Custom Agents, Workers and premium models, which spend credits.[3] Image generation in beta has its own per-user limits of 10 per 24 hours and 30 per 30 days.[2] The contract wording is shorter: “Your use of Notion AI is subject to fair usage restrictions.”[1] Notion reserves the right to change the allowances, including the features affected and their size.[3] Admins can switch on “Allow workspace to use Notion credits after AI limit is reached”. Members who exhaust the allowance can then continue by spending credits.[3] Catalog proof: Notion AI usage allowance in six-hour and monthly windows.

Notion credit

The supplementary terms define Notion Credits as “usage credits that are applied when a User takes certain actions or uses certain features or functionality, including when utilizing certain Notion AI features or initiating an Automated Action”.[1] There are three subcategories:

Credit type Contract definition (summarized) How bought
Monthly Notion Credits Included with each User Subscription based on the plan; refresh monthly on the subscription start day; unused credits expire at month end; capped at the allocations on notion.com/pricing[1] Self-serve monthly plans: USD 10 per 1,000 per month[4]
Annual Notion Credits Additional annual allocation bought as an Add-on Subscription, drawn when monthly credits run out; unused credits expire at the end of the annual period[1] Annual Business and Enterprise plans: USD 13 per 1,000, paid upfront[4]
On-Demand Notion Credits Available once the Notion Credit Limit is met, “billed quarterly in arrears as they are consumed”, only on designated plans[1] Through an account team[4]

The Notion Credit Limit is Monthly plus Annual credits.[1] The help centre describes credits as “an add-on for Business and Enterprise plans”, shared across the workspace.[4] Annual credits are not cheaper than monthly credits. Their benefit is that they can be used at any time in the subscription year.[4] The page source of the pricing page carries the same rates as packs of 100 credits: USD 1.00 monthly and USD 1.30 annual.[12] Catalog rows: Notion credit; Notion credits (monthly); Notion credits (annual); Monthly credits cost USD 10 and annual credits USD 13 per 1,000.

What consumes credits

  • Custom Agents. Each run uses credits. The amount depends on how much the agent reads, how many steps it takes, how often it runs and which model it uses. Credits are shared, “so every Custom Agent draws from the same balance, no matter who created or ran it”.[6] Notion’s benchmarks range from about USD 0.03 to 0.11 per run for a Q&A agent to USD 0.10 to 0.30 for a daily brief agent.[6] Catalog proof: Custom Agents draw on one workspace credit balance.
  • Workers. Workers run code without AI reasoning and are “counted in runs”. They are free during the beta on Business and Enterprise and will later require credits, typically “$0.0023 per run”.[7] Catalog rows: Worker run; Workers are free during beta and then priced per run.
  • Premium AI models. Premium models are off until an owner or admin enables them. They spend credits on every use, and “Notion charges tokens at each provider’s published rates, with no markup”.[10] Admins can set a default per-member credit limit and higher limits for named people or groups.[10] Catalog proof: Premium AI models spend credits at provider rates.
  • Custom Agent Autofill. Basic Autofill is included in Business and Enterprise without credits. Custom Agent Autofill uses credits.[5]
  • Notion AI beyond the allowance, if an admin allows it.[3]

Business and Enterprise members with a personal ChatGPT Plus or Pro account can connect it so that Notion Agent uses that plan when a GPT model is selected. Notion says the connection is used for billing and usage attribution, and Notion’s agreements with its AI subprocessors still apply.[16]

Counting / floors

The contract rules on consumption are short and strict:

  • Order of use. “Notion Credits will be consumed in the following order: Monthly Notion Credits then Annual Notion Credits.” On-demand credits apply where available once both are exhausted.[1] The help centre adds that free credits are used before monthly and annual credits.[4] Catalog proof: Credits are consumed Monthly, then Annual, then On-Demand.
  • Suspension at the limit. Without on-demand credits, features that consume credits may be suspended when the limit is reached.[1] In practice Custom Agents and premium models pause, and admins are notified at 80% and 100% of usage.[5] Catalog proof: Agents and premium models pause when credits run out.
  • No carry-over, no transfer. Credits “are not transferable, refundable or redeemable for any other Subscription Fees” and “do not rollover”. Unless otherwise stated they expire one month from issuance.[1] Notion’s refund page allows refunds of purchased credits that have not been used at all.[13] Catalog proof: Credits do not roll over and are not transferable or refundable.
  • Variable burn rate. Notion “reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify Notion Credit calculations and Notion Credit allocations”.[1] The MSA FAQ explains that the price per credit pack in an Order Form “is locked at contract signature”, but the number of credits an action consumes can change.[14] Catalog proof: Notion may change how many credits an action consumes.
  • Automated Actions. Credits apply whether an action is triggered by the customer or by a Non-Notion Service. The customer “is responsible for all Automated Actions within its Workspace and their usage of Notion Credits”.[1] Catalog proof: Customer is responsible for credits consumed by Automated Actions.
  • Credits for added Users. Monthly Notion Credits for added Users are allocated only after an in-product purchase, a completed and paid True-Up, or an Order Form for the new Users.[1] Catalog proof: Monthly Notion Credits for added Users require a completed purchase or True-Up.

Mid-month changes follow the seat logic. An increase is available at once and billed from the next monthly service date. A decrease takes effect at the start of the next service period.[5] For account-team customers who replace an Order Form that includes Annual Notion Credits before the end of its term, the unused annual credits are credited at the lesser of the unused dollar amount or the prorated annual credit fee. “Notion Credits have no cash value.”[5] Catalog proof: Unused Annual Notion Credits are credited when an order form is replaced mid-term.

A failed credit payment is handled separately from the plan. Credits already paid for keep working, and credits above that amount are put on hold until payment succeeds.[4] A workspace whose subscription is billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play cannot buy credits in Notion; it has to move to a plan bought directly on notion.com.[5]

Virtualization & partitioning

Not applicable. The partition for credits is the workspace, and for Enterprise organizations the contract pool (see Programs).

Cloud / BYOL

Not applicable. Notion AI runs on Notion’s service and its AI subprocessors. The supplementary terms state that Notion does not use Customer Data, or let others use it, to train the models that power Notion AI. Input and Output are the customer’s Customer Data.[1]

Programs

Out of scope

AI data-handling commitments beyond the licensing points above, AI connector configuration, Notion Mail and Notion Calendar AI features, and the Developer Terms for building on Notion’s API are not covered. Credit benchmark figures are Notion’s estimates, and Notion expects them to change.[6]
