Miro licensing is the set of terms under which Miro sells access to its cloud visual collaboration platform: online whiteboards (“boards”) with diagrams, docs, tables, slides, prototypes, AI features and an MCP server for external AI tools. The service is sold only as a subscription. There is no on-premises or perpetual product. Pricing is per seat: on the Free plan all users are free, while on Starter and Business “you’re charged for every member added to your workspace”, and members added mid-cycle are prorated.[1] Catalog proof: Starter and Business charge for every member.
The contracting party is RealtimeBoard Inc. dba Miro or the Miro Affiliate named in an Order. Self-serve and reseller customers accept the Terms of Service, effective 2021-09-01.[2] Enterprise customers sign an Order Form under the Master Cloud Agreement (MCA), published 2024-02-01. Orders signed before that date follow earlier MCA versions.[3] AI features carry a separate set of AI Terms, effective 2024-07-17.[4]
Three user roles drive the count. A member consumes a paid seat and can create boards. A guest has a free Miro account and is invited to specific boards. A visitor opens a public board link without an account. Guests and visitors cost nothing on any plan.[1][6] Licence managers therefore need to know who is a member, not how many people use Miro.
Editions
Miro publishes four commercial plans and a free Education plan. List prices on the pricing page are per member per month, billed yearly. Monthly billing costs more, and yearly billing “saves 20%”.[1]
| Plan | List price (USD) | Seats and users | AI credits | MCP calls per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | Unlimited members, three editable boards, no guests | Limited trial | 100 |
| Starter | 8 | Paid seat per member; guests view or comment only | 25 per member per month | 500 |
| Business | 20 | Paid seat per member; unlimited guests who can edit; SSO | 50 per member per month | 2,000 |
| Enterprise | Custom, from 30 members | Accelerate and Collaborate licenses; SCIM, audit logs | From 2,500 per month, pooled | 10,000 |
| Education | 0 | 100 members per educator team, 10 per student team | 100 per month | Not stated |
Sources: pricing page[1], AI credits[10] and Education plan[14]. Feature differences, guest rights and the Education plan are covered in Miro plans and user roles.
The Free plan is described as a sandbox that can be used “as long as you want”. Every invited user joins as an editor and sees every board.[5] Starter and Business are self-serve plans with a minimum purchase of two licenses. Enterprise is sold through Miro’s sales team.[5]
Metrics
| Unit | Catalog row | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Member (paid seat or license) | Member (paid seat) | Starter, Business, Education team limits |
| Guest | Guest | Starter, Business, Enterprise, Education (free) |
| Visitor | Visitor | All plans (free, public link) |

On Enterprise, Accelerate is described as “Miro’s primary Enterprise license”. Collaborate is “the legacy Full and Standard license” and covers core collaboration, planning and integrations.[8] Former Advanced licenses became Accelerate and former Full or Standard licenses became Collaborate, with pricing and contract terms unchanged.[8] Catalog proof: Advanced renamed Accelerate; Full and Standard renamed Collaborate.
Counting / floors
Licenses, not people. On Starter and Business, “billing is based on the total number of licenses, not team members”.[9] A license freed by removing a member stays billable until renewal unless the team size is also reduced. Inviting a member when every license is assigned adds an extra license automatically.[9] Catalog proof: Billing counts licenses, not team members; Inviting a member with no free license adds an extra license.
True-ups. On yearly self-serve plans, added licenses are billed through true-up invoices: monthly for card payment and quarterly for invoiced customers. Removals take effect only at renewal.[9] The mechanics are covered in Miro self-serve billing and true-ups. Catalog proof: True-up invoices for licenses added on yearly plans.
Named seats. Enterprise licensing “is designed around dedicated seats for specific, named users”, and the regular or frequent recycling or pooling of licenses is not supported.[7] Both contracts forbid shared seats. The Terms of Service bar customers from letting Users “share User seats”, and the MCA bars letting individuals “share User logon credentials”.[2][3] Catalog proof: Enterprise licenses are named seats; recycling or pooling is not supported; Users may not share seats (Terms of Service); Enterprise users may not share logon credentials.
Floors. Starter and Business list a minimum purchase of two licenses.[5] Annual invoicing requires at least 10 licenses on Starter or 5 on Business. Enterprise pricing starts from 30 members.[1] Catalog proof: Invoicing needs 10 Starter or 5 Business licenses.
Virtualization & partitioning
Miro is a multi-tenant cloud service counted by user, so processor, core and partitioning rules do not apply. The nearest equivalent is the team structure. A subscription is attached to a team. Business and Enterprise can hold several teams in one subscription, and a user can belong to teams in several subscriptions.[5] On Enterprise, one license covers a user in every team of the same subscription. A user in teams of different subscriptions needs a license in each.[17] Catalog proof: One Enterprise license covers all teams in the subscription.
Cloud / BYOL
The service is hosted only by Miro, so bring-your-own-licence does not arise. Enterprise adds regional data hosting in the EU, US, Australia and Japan. EU residency is listed on every plan. Existing customers pay migration fees to move from EU to US, Australian or Japanese residency.[1] Desktop and mobile apps are clients of the same service. Under both contracts the “Software” is client code provided for use with the Service and is covered by the subscription.[2][3]
Programs
- Flexible Licensing Program and non-flexible licensing. These are Enterprise licensing models. Under FLP, Collaborate licenses are uncapped, Free licenses upgrade automatically when users edit, and the contract is amended at true-up “with additional licenses and zero retroactive fees”.[12] Non-FLP bills a fixed number of licenses annually.[7] See Miro Enterprise licenses and the Flexible Licensing Program.
- Self-serve true-up invoices and the invoicing payment option for Starter and Business.[9]
- Business plan 14-day free trial, which converts automatically to a paid subscription. Trials and Betas are limited to internal evaluation, by default for 30 days.[1][2]
- Education plan for accredited institutions, a nonprofit discount, and Miro for Startups credits and Enterprise discount.[1][14]
- Billing groups and soft quotas for internal chargeback on Enterprise.
- Add-ons: AI credits, Enterprise Guard, AI Workflows for Enterprise, and Premium Support. Premium Support adds fixed response times, from 2 hours for Urgent incidents to 48 Business Hours for Low.[13]
AI credits
Miro AI is metered in AI credits. Each AI action consumes a set number of credits; Diagrams cost 5, an image 3 and a Doc 2. Credits are pooled across the team, refresh monthly and do not roll over.[10] Enterprise allocations follow seat-count tiers, from 2,500 credits a month for 1 to 50 seats up to 200,000 for 6,001 to 50,000 seats. The tiers are stated “as of March 2, 2026”. Enterprise usage is a soft limit, while Starter and Business AI actions pause when credits run out.[11][10] Under the AI Terms the customer owns Output, but IP claims about Output fall outside Miro’s indemnity.[4] See Miro AI credits and MCP limits. Catalog proof: Enterprise AI credits by license tier; Enterprise AI credit limit is soft.
Audits and compliance
Neither the Terms of Service nor the MCA contains an audit or records-inspection clause of the kind found in on-premises licence agreements. Compliance is enforced in the product instead. Seats are added and billed when members join, Enterprise users run out to Free Restricted when paid licenses are exhausted, and Miro may suspend access for breach of the use restrictions.[2][7] The contracts limit use to internal business purposes and forbid using the Service “on behalf of, or to provide any product or service to, third parties”. Consultancies that run client workshops should check this clause.[2][3] Catalog proof: Service only for internal business or personal purposes.
For reclaiming licenses, Enterprise Company Admins can deactivate users. A deactivated user is not billed and the license is released.[16] Miro also documents a SAM integration with Productiv that downloads subscription usage and deactivates users based on usage.[15] Catalog proof: Deactivated Enterprise users release their license; Enterprise SAM integration can reclaim licenses. For the general discipline see true-up and named-user licensing.
Out of scope
- Signed Enterprise Order Forms, negotiated discounts and Enterprise price lists, which are not public.
- Monthly self-serve list prices, which the pricing page shows only in an interactive toggle and which were not captured.
- The Miro Developer Platform terms, Marketplace terms and the Data Processing Addendum, except where cited above.
- Enterprise Guard feature terms beyond the add-on listing.
- Litigation: no court case about Miro software licensing, licence scope or copyright in Miro software was found in court records. A 2023 patent suit against RealtimeBoard in the District of Delaware is outside this wiki’s litigation scope.
