Jamf licensing

This article is an overview of how Jamf licenses Jamf Pro, Jamf Now, Jamf School, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect and its bundled plans. It is not legal advice and does not replace the Software License and Services Agreement, a Quote or an Order.

Jamf licensing is the set of terms under which Jamf sells its device management, identity and security software for Apple devices (and, in Jamf for Mobile, Android devices). The main products are Jamf Pro, Jamf Now, Jamf School, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect and Jamf Safe Internet. One agreement governs most of them: the Jamf Software License and Services Agreement (SLASA). It applies whether the customer buys directly from Jamf or through a Jamf-authorized reseller, and the products bought are listed in a Quote or Order.[1] The SLASA grants a non-exclusive, non-sublicensable, non-transferable licence to use the Product Offerings during the Subscription Term, for internal business purposes only.[1] Jamf describes its pricing as subscriptions priced on the number of Devices and/or Users. Fees are fixed for the Subscription Term.[2] Jamf sells no perpetual licence for Jamf Pro. Even on-premise deployments are licensed for a Subscription Term.[2] For the general models, see concurrent and device licensing and true-up.

Editions

Jamf’s public pricing groups the products into per-device plans:

Plan Built from Unit and list price (USD)
Jamf for Mac Jamf Pro, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect $12.50 per macOS device per month, billed annually, 25-device minimum[4]
Jamf for Mobile Jamf Pro, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect $5.75 per mobile device per month, billed annually, 25-device minimum[4]
Jamf Now Jamf Now Starting at $4 per device per month; for organizations with fewer than 25 employees[4]
Jamf for K-12 Jamf School, Jamf Safe Internet, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect Custom pricing; device minimums apply[5]
Jamf for Mac - Higher Education and Jamf for Mobile - Higher Education Jamf Pro, Jamf Connect, Jamf Protect Priced per device; custom pricing; device minimums apply[5]

Jamf for Mac and Jamf for Mobile are sold only to Jamf Cloud customers. They are not available to on-premises customers.[4] The public pricing page lists no standalone prices for Jamf Pro, Jamf Connect or Jamf Protect.[4] Detail is in Jamf Pro device counting and true-up, Jamf School device licences and Jamf Connect, Protect and add-on licensing.

Metrics

Jamf term Catalog row Definition
Device Device “A Customer device, including Apple, Inc. devices such as iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or tvOS devices” (SLASA s.2(g))[1]
User User The individual end user of a Device; for user-based licensing, users of shared devices used by multiple employees are excluded (SLASA s.2(aa))[1]
Recurring device licence Jamf School recurring licence Calendar-year, academic-year or full-year licence per enrolled Jamf School device[10]
Lifetime licence Jamf School lifetime licence One-time licence for a single device, tied to its serial number[10]

The SLASA does not say which products are counted by Device and which by User. The Quote or Order sets the quantity limits.[1] The User definition excludes shift workers on shared devices. An organisation with many shared iPads should therefore check whether its Quote counts Users or Devices.

Counting / floors

Use limits. Product Offerings may carry User or Device quantity limits set in the Quote or Order. If the customer goes over them, Jamf will work with the customer either to order more or to reduce use. If the customer is unable or unwilling to stay within the limits, Jamf may suspend access until it complies.[1] In Jamf Pro an excess shows up as a “Device Count Exceeded” notification. It does not interrupt management immediately. It also appears when a device type is enrolled that the subscription does not cover, for example tvOS devices under iOS-only licences.[7] Catalog: Exceeding User or Device limits: order more or reduce use, else suspension; Device Count Exceeded notification when enrolled devices or device types exceed the subscription.

True-up. Jamf does not refund prepaid fees when Devices or Users fall during the Subscription Term, whatever the reason. At renewal the customer “trues up” with Jamf, and fees for later terms may go down. Devices or Users added during the term cost additional fees.[2] Catalog: No refunds for mid-term reductions; true-up at renewal, pay for additions.

Floors. Jamf for Mac and Jamf for Mobile have a 25-device minimum.[4] The education offers state that device minimums apply but do not publish them.[5] Catalog: Jamf for Mac $12.50 and Jamf for Mobile $5.75 per device per month, billed annually, 25-device minimum.

Virtualization & partitioning

Jamf counts managed devices and users, not processors or virtual machines. The SLASA allows one instance of the Software in non-production environments for internal business purposes.[1] A virtual Mac enrolled in Jamf Pro is a managed device like any other. Jamf’s public documents give no special rule for it. Catalog: One non-production instance permitted.

Cloud / BYOL

Most customers license Jamf as a Hosted Service, run on servers that Jamf provides and maintains. Some deploy it on-premise for a Subscription Term, and are then responsible for updates and infrastructure.[2] Jamf Cloud supports the last three minor Jamf Pro releases. If an instance falls behind and a patch window cannot be agreed, Jamf upgrades it to the current supported version.[13] The Trust Center lists a Bring Your Own Key Addendum, updated April 2026, for customer-managed encryption keys.[6] It is not a bring-your-own-licence arrangement.

Programs

  • Trial Offerings. Trials are for non-production use only. Either party may end one at any time, and Jamf’s liability for trials is capped at USD 1,000.[1] Jamf School trial licences last 30 days, followed by a two-week grace period.[10] Jamf Connect runs in trial mode without a licence for 30 days after the installed version’s release date.[11]
  • Education Customer Amendment. Available to US public education institutions. It changes confidentiality, tax and indemnity terms, and governing law becomes that of the customer’s state.[12]
  • Standard Technical Support. Included with Hosted Services subscriptions. For on-premise installations it is usually bought in 12-month increments.[8]
  • Jamf Now Balance and Premium Cloud are covered in Jamf Pro device counting and true-up. Beta Offerings are opt-in pre-release features with no support or warranty.[1]

Contract terms

Who may use it. Affiliates may use and buy Product Offerings under the SLASA. Customer Service Providers, meaning managed service providers or contractors running outsourced IT, may use them on the customer’s behalf, solely to support the customer’s internal operations.[1] The Software may not be used to perform services for third parties on a service bureau, SaaS or time-sharing basis.[1] Catalog: Affiliates and Customer Service Providers may use the Product Offerings; No service bureau, SaaS or time-sharing use for third parties.

Renewal and exit. If the Quote or Order says so, a subscription continues automatically for a renewal term. The customer must give at least 60 days’ notice of non-renewal before the term ends.[1] The June 2025 SLASA removed termination for convenience. Customers keep the right to terminate if Jamf commits an uncured material breach.[3] When the agreement ends, the customer stops using the Product Offering and destroys all copies, certifying the destruction.[1] Catalog: Auto-renewal where the Quote says so; 60 days notice of non-renewal; No termination for convenience since the June 2025 SLASA; On termination stop use and destroy copies, certifying destruction.

Contracting party. Since the June 2025 update, the Jamf entity a customer contracts with depends on where its headquarters is. Jamf Ltd. covers the United Kingdom and Europe. Jamf India Private Ltd. covers India. Jamf Software, Inc. covers Taiwan. JAMF Software, LLC covers the United States and all other countries. If the headquarters moves, the agreement passes automatically to the matching entity.[1] Before the update, every customer contracted with JAMF Software, LLC.[3] Catalog: Jamf contracting party, law and venue follow customer headquarters.

Acceptance. Since 2026-01-14, new organizations accept the SLASA in Jamf Account. Until they do, they cannot see instances or activation codes, and the acceptance cannot be revoked.[9] Catalog: SLASA must be accepted in Jamf Account to view activation codes (from 2026-01-14).

Audits and compliance

The SLASA has no audit clause of the kind found in perpetual-licence agreements. Compliance is checked from product data instead. Jamf may use Performance and Usage Data, Telemetry Data and Customer Content to “check compliance with contractual usage limits”.[1] The remedies for excess use are a purchase or a reduction, and suspension of access if neither happens.[1] Jamf Pro shows the licensed seat counts and warns when they are exceeded.[7] Jamf Connect collects hashed licence-usage data.[11] Because the true-up happens at renewal, the useful compliance check is a count of managed devices and users, compared with the Quote, before each renewal. Catalog: Jamf may use usage and telemetry data to check contractual usage limits. See license compliance.
