AVEVA engineering and simulation licensing covers AVEVA’s capital-project engineering and design software, such as AVEVA E3D Design and AVEVA Unified Engineering, and the SimSci process simulation and optimization products: AVEVA Process Simulation, PRO/II Simulation, Dynamic Simulation, APC and Optimization. These products are licensed under the AVEVA Software Schedule Engineering (Including SimSci and Process Optimization), version 5.4, dated June 2026. The schedule prevails over conflicting terms in the GTCs for the software listed in the Order Form.[1] It offers several licence models. AVEVA notes that not all of them are available for every product and that some must be combined.[1] Under Flex, the same desktop products can also be licensed per user per day through Licensing as a Service (LaaS).[2]
Editions
The schedule describes these licence models:[1]
| Model | How it works | Schedule section |
|---|---|---|
| Initial/Annual | Per Seat for the Software Term; an initial licence fee plus term licence fees | s.6.1 |
| Rental | Per Seat for a set number of months, without automatic renewal | s.6.2 |
| Client Activated License Management (CALM) | Tokens redeemed on a website for licence keys covering Days or Months | s.6.3 |
| Usage Based Licensing (UBL) | Tokens exchanged for 12-hour Token Access Periods per user | s.6.4 |
| SimSci Network License | Concurrent instances for computers networked to a Designated Server | s.6.5(a) |
| SimSci Node-Lock License | One local instance on the licensed computer | s.6.5(b) |
| SimSci Token License | Concurrent SimSci Tokens shared across products on a Designated Server | s.6.5(c) |
| USB Key License | A hardware key holding the License File; one computer and one local instance at a time; only in certain renewals | s.6.5(c)(iv) |
AVEVA Pipeline Simulation has its own server licence. It runs on the Designated Server of a single or redundant System, and use is limited to the number of computers or workstations on the Order Form.[1]
Metrics
| Unit | Catalog row | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| User | A single user running one or more instances of the Software from a single workstation; more than one instance on a workstation consumes multiple licences.[1] | |
| Seat | The ezXOS, ES stations and non-XOS computers described in the Order Form with access to the System’s services and applications.[1] | |
| Token (CALM) | Token | A notional unit that provides access to the Software when redeemed by creating a License Key.[1] |
| Token Access Period (UBL) | Token Access Period | Twelve hours during which a User may run multiple instances of each product from one workstation.[1] |
| SimSci Token | SimSci Token | A token under the SimSci token-based security structure, valued as stated in the Order Form.[1] |
| LaaS licence | LaaS licence | A product licence allocated to an active user until midnight, within a share value limit.[2] |
Catalog: Engineering User: multiple instances on one workstation consume multiple licences.
Counting / floors
CALM. AVEVA configures the CALM website with the number of Tokens on the Order Form. Only registered Designated Users may call off Tokens.[1] The token cost of a licence key is the tokens per License Access Unit (LAU) for the product, times the number of LAUs in the License Period, times the number of Simultaneous Users. An LAU is a Day or a Month, and AVEVA combines LAUs in the most cost-effective way.[1] Further rules:
- Keys are generated against servers that AVEVA has registered.
- A Month LAU cannot be generated in the final month of the Order Form.
- Keys expire at midnight on the last day of the License Period.
- Tokens spent on a key generated in error are not refunded.
- If payments are overdue, keys cannot be generated for periods more than 60 days past the due date.[1]
- Tokens still held when the Order Form ends expire without refund or credit.[1] Catalog: CALM tokens expire with the Order Form without refund.
The current CALM service is a CONNECT portal that orders licences against Flex Credits. It works with AVEVA Licensing System (ALS) servers and AVEVA Enterprise Licensing System (AELS) sites, and replaced the obsolete CALM1.[4] Catalog: CALM.
UBL. Tokens are bought on the Order Form date and on each anniversary, and expire on the following anniversary unless a carry-over is agreed in writing. Top-Up Tokens bought mid-year expire on the next anniversary of the Order Form.[1] Catalog: UBL tokens expire on the next anniversary. Each 12-hour Token Access Period uses the number of tokens in the Token Weighting Table. Several users need one period each. If use runs past the available tokens, AVEVA may charge its standard rates.[1] Catalog: Usage Based Licensing Model.
SimSci Token Licenses. Tokens are checked out while an instance runs and return to the pool when it closes. Any mix of products may run as long as enough tokens are free.[1] The schedule’s example: with 70 tokens and products costing 20, 50 and 70 tokens per instance, a customer can run three instances of the first product, or one each of the first two, or one of the third.[1] This is a concurrent-use model, so peak simultaneous token use is the number to size against.
Multiple instances. A User running more than one instance from a single workstation consumes more than one licence.[1] Under LaaS the equivalent limit is the share value: most commonly five concurrent sessions, but for some products only one.[2] E3D (AVEVA201) allows five sessions per seat and PRO/II (SIM500) allows one.[3] Catalog: Exceeding share limit or switching accounts creates a new LaaS charge.
Virtualization & partitioning
The schedule ties use to physical places and systems. The Software must run on the System described in the Order Form, under supported Microsoft Windows versions. It may be used only at the Site, and may not be moved to another Site or System without AVEVA’s prior written consent.[1] Catalog: Engineering software used only at the Site. Network, token and node-lock licences need a License File on the Designated Server or on the licensed computer.[1] The Designated Server may be virtual or physical for AVEVA Pipeline Simulation.[1] The schedule publishes no rule on cores or virtual hosts. The licensing system enforces the counts.
Cloud / BYOL
Under LaaS, licences are issued from CONNECT instead of an on-premises licence server, and no VPN is needed.[2] A licence is allocated to the user until midnight. Using a different Windows or CONNECT account, or going over the share limit, starts a new charge.[2] Products that share a licence feature are charged at the cheapest product on the credits agreement. The help page’s example is E3D on premises (FLEX-UENG-002) and Unified Engineering on CONNECT - 3D (FLEX-UENG-068).[3] Catalog: E3D on premises (FLEX-UENG-002); Unified Engineering on CONNECT - 3D (FLEX-UENG-068). Features of Point Cloud Manager may need internet access and may consume different credit types.[1] See AVEVA Flex credits and CONNECT licensing.
Programs
- CALM and UBL: token programs, described above.
- Mandatory support for simulation. AVEVA Process Simulation, PRO/II, Dynamic Simulation, APC and Optimization Software licensed for less than 20 years must have Support for the entire Software Term. For terms of 20 years or more, Dynamic Simulation, APC and Optimization need Support only in the first year.[1] Catalog: Simulation software requires support for the whole term under 20 years.
- New features. AVEVA may charge an incremental licence fee for new features, functionality or capability. It may also require Support to have been bought for the whole Software Term.[1]
Audits and compliance
The engineering models have their own reporting duties on top of the GTC audit clause:[5]
- UBL Log Agent. The AVEVA Licensing System on the Designated Server contains a Log Agent, which sends daily encrypted Usage Logs to AVEVA. If the Log Agent fails, AVEVA must be given immediate access to restore it. Breaching these duties is a material breach that allows immediate termination. If logs are missing or corrupt, AVEVA may estimate token use. Before transmission, the customer must anonymize any personal data in the logs.[1] Catalog: UBL Log Agent must send daily Usage Logs.
- SimSci Usage Log. Customers with SimSci Token Licenses send the token system’s usage log to AVEVA each calendar quarter, by the tenth day of the following month.[1] Catalog: SimSci token Usage Log due quarterly.
- Security technology. In 2012 AVEVA said its engineering products would progressively include security technology that checks the integrity of the licensing environment and alerts AVEVA, with location data, when software is used illegally.[6] The current GTC describes the same kind of mechanism.[5]
