WinZip activation, registration and lifecycle

This article is about how WinZip licences are activated and registered (registration codes, activation codes, multi-user registration files and account sign-in) and about WinZip's version lifecycle. Contract terms are covered in the EULA and BULA articles.

On This Page

WinZip activation and registration is the set of mechanisms Corel uses to turn an evaluation copy of WinZip into a licensed one. The WinZip EULA terms state that the software may include product activation and other technology designed to prevent unauthorized use and copying.[13] The BULA forbids hacking or modifying licence keys and bypassing licence-key limits.[15] WinZip uses four mechanisms: a registration code, an activation code, a multi-user registration file, and, for Suite subscriptions, sign-in to a WinZip account.[1][5] Each leaves different evidence on a machine, which matters when reconciling installations with entitlements. The licensing terms are summarised in WinZip licensing.

Editions

Purchase Credential issued How it registers
Single-user perpetual, bought from WinZip Registration code[1] Name and code typed into the registration dialog[1]
Single-user perpetual, bought from a reseller Activation code[1] Exchanged online for a registration code[2]
Multi-user licence Registration file (WinZip.wzmul)[1] File placed in C:\ProgramData\WinZip[4]
WinZip Suite subscription (76.5 and later) Account credentials[5] Sign-in from within WinZip[5]

WinZip Courier and WinZip Self-Extractor follow the same patterns, with their own registration codes and multi-user files: WinZipEC.ecmul for Courier and WinZipSE.semul for Self-Extractor.[3] The Command Line Support Add-on is a free add-on for licensed WinZip users.[14] Catalog: The Command Line add-on is free for licensed users.

Metrics

Registration does not define the licence metric. Retail licences are counted per Device, up to three per licence, and business licences per Managed Device.[13] The multi-user license row records the delivery mechanism. According to the knowledge base, the WinZip.wzmul file contains registration information and a link to the WinZip website where the customer can view the number of licences assigned.[3]

Counting / floors

Version binding. Registration information for one major version also registers its minor updates, but not another major version. A WinZip 76.0 code works with 76.1 and later minor releases, but a WinZip 25 code does not work with WinZip 26 or 27.[1] The multi-user registration file is bound the same way. The file for WinZip 26 will not register WinZip 27.[3] The version a code registers is therefore direct evidence of the version that was licensed, which matters because a perpetual licence covers only that version. Catalog: Registration codes and files work only for one major version.

Activation codes. An activation code works only with its intended application and version. A WinZip 20 activation code does not work with WinZip 21, Self-Extractor or Courier. Each code can be used only once.[2] Activating sends the name or email address to WinZip’s server, which issues a registration code. That code replaces the activation code for any future re-installation.[2] Since WinZip 21.5, single-user registration information is checked against a server when it is entered.[1] Catalog: Activation codes from resellers are single-use and version-specific.

Multi-user files. Multi-user customers receive a unique WinZip.wzmul file with their order confirmation.[3] Placing it in the WinZip subfolder of the Windows Common AppData folder (typically C:\ProgramData\WinZip) makes WinZip open as a registered version for every user of that machine.[4] Because one file can register any number of machines, the count of installations has to be compared with the quantity on the order. The software does not limit it. This is an editorial observation based on the cited procedure. Uninstalling WinZip does not remove the WinZip.wzmul file.[10] Catalog: Multi-user licences are registered by a WinZip.wzmul file.

Subscription sign-in. From WinZip 76.5, subscription copies activate when the user signs in to their account in the Account Portal. Upgrading from WinZip 76-76.4 to 76.5 or later starts a 30-day Grace Period in which the user must sign in. If a copy is activated with a registration code instead, the same 30-day period applies, after which the copy becomes unregistered unless the user signs in.[5] An account administrator can invite members to use a subscription. An invited user signs in and selects the subscription to activate WinZip on their computer.[5] Catalog: Suite subscriptions activate by account sign-in, with a 30-day grace period.

Virtualization & partitioning

Network and Enterprise deployment

The knowledge base lists several ways to deploy multi-user licences: users install manually from MSI and licence files, Group Policy software installation, SCCM, or msiexec from the command line. The first installation needs Administrator or Power User rights.[4] For WinZip Enterprise, the MSI property USER_WZMUL_LOCATION points to a shared folder holding WinZip.wzmul, so the file is copied automatically during installation. WinZip Courier is licensed automatically when WinZip is licensed.[11] The registration file must be downloaded from the link supplied at purchase, and a lost file is recovered through a support ticket.[11]

These are technical procedures. Whether a terminal server or VDI pool may run WinZip at all depends on the agreement. The EULA excludes Virtualization Environments, and the BULA allows them only at one licence per accessing Managed Device (WinZip Enterprise and BULA licensing).[13]

Cloud / BYOL

No cloud-specific activation method is documented. Suite subscriptions are tied to the WinZip account rather than to a machine, and installers are downloaded from the Suite portal.[6]

Programs

Transfers between computers

To move a Suite subscription, the user uninstalls WinZip from the old computer, downloads the installer from the Suite portal, installs it on the new computer and signs in.[6] To move a perpetual licence, the user records the registration information from the About dialog or the Registered Product Lookup, uninstalls from the old computer, and installs and registers the same version on the new one. Older versions are on the Legacy Download Links page.[6] Moving to another computer this way is different from transferring a licence to another party, which the EULA restricts.[13]

Upgrades

Suite subscribers update through “Check for Updates” in the application. Perpetual licence holders on WinZip 27 and earlier are directed to buy a new licence.[12] Upgrades are free under the Suite subscription plan but not for perpetual licences.[9] Registered WinZip Standard users are eligible for a special-price upgrade to WinZip Pro. After that upgrade, Standard single-user and multi-user registrations are replaced with Pro registrations, and a multi-user upgrade is registered with a new WinZip.wzmul file.[10] WinZip Enterprise’s optional auto-update installs minor versions only.[11] Catalog: Upgrades are free with a Suite subscription, not with perpetual licences; WinZip Standard to Pro upgrade offer; Enterprise auto-update installs minor versions only.

Lifecycle

The Product Lifecycle Policy says WinZip regularly phases out older versions. Technical support ends for retired versions, and the knowledge base remains available for self-service.[7] Selected dates from the policy:

WinZip Command Line 6 2019-09-10 Not set[7]
WinZip Self-Extractor 4 2016-09-18 Not set[7]

An older notice lists the versions whose support has already ended: WinZip 9.0 to 24.0, Courier up to 9.5, WinZip for Mac 1.0 to 7.0 and Self-Extractor 2.2 to 3.1. Product updates, including fixes for bugs and new security threats, are no longer provided for them.[8] Customer service still helps with downloads and registration for expired versions where it can.[8] Catalog: Support for each WinZip perpetual version ends on a published date; Unsupported versions get no product updates.

The subscription product (WinZip 76, 77) and the perpetual product (WinZip 27 to 30) are numbered differently. The version number in an inventory therefore shows which licence type a copy most likely belongs to. That inference is editorial and should be confirmed against the registration method.

Out of scope

This page does not cover offline activation procedures, troubleshooting of registration errors, or the WinZip mobile apps. Licence counting, virtualization and audit terms are in WinZip EULA and retail licensing and WinZip Enterprise and BULA licensing.
