SketchUp licensing describes how Trimble sells and licenses SketchUp, its 3D modelling software for architecture, interior, construction and design work, together with LayOut and the web and iPad versions. Since 2020 SketchUp has been sold only as subscriptions. “On November 4, 2020, we stopped selling our perpetual Classic license.” Subscribers sign in with a Trimble ID instead of entering a serial number and authorization code.[1] The SketchUp licence page on sketchup.com now redirects to the Trimble Offering Terms index. That index lists the Offering Terms v4.0 and Supplemental Terms for Software v3.0, both last updated on 2026-08-13.[9] The Supplemental Terms add only that V-Ray use within SketchUp plans is also subject to V-Ray’s own License and Services Agreement.[11] Catalog proof: SketchUp Classic perpetual licence sale ended 2020-11-04.

SketchUp for Schools is free with Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft Education accounts.[2] Catalog proof: SketchUp list prices are per user, billed annually, excluding tax.
Metrics
Named user. “Each product license is intended for use by a single named user, a real person using their first name, last name, and email address, for the duration of the subscription term.” The person using a licence must be the person assigned at purchase or renewal. “Single named-user licenses cannot be transferred to another user, but can be updated at specific times”, as set out in the Trimble User Assignment and Device Management Policy.[4] That policy allows reassignment only when a user leaves or changes role, when a contractor’s engagement ends, when the wrong person was assigned at purchase, or at renewal.[10] See Named User. Catalog proof: SketchUp licence is for a single named real person; Named User reassignment only in four situations.
Two devices. SketchUp’s help says that “The SketchUp End User License Agreement (EULA) limits the amount of installations and authorizations for each application included in your subscription to two instances or devices.” A third device or instance triggers “You have exceeded your allowed activations” until another is deauthorized, and users can deauthorize only their own activations.[3] See SketchUp activation. Catalog proof: SketchUp: two devices or instances per application.
Counting / floors
There is no minimum quantity; plans are bought per user. Account owners add licences in the Trimble Admin Console. New licences take the subscription’s existing term and renewal date, and only a prorated amount is charged for the rest of the current term.[4] For a licence position, the count is the number of named people assigned, not installations, provided each person uses no more than two devices per application.
Offline use. “Subscriptions can be used offline for up to 28 days before requiring an internet connection to re-authenticate.” A subscription still ends on schedule if the device is offline.[1] SketchUp validates the subscription “about once every 28 days”.[5] Catalog proof: SketchUp subscriptions must re-authenticate at least every 28 days.
Virtualization & partitioning
No SketchUp-specific virtualization rule was found. The Trimble Offering Terms bar using or hosting Licensed Software “in a virtual server environment” unless the Order, Supplemental Terms or Documentation permit it.[12] Running desktop SketchUp on shared virtual desktop infrastructure therefore needs a permission in the Order or documentation. The two-instance activation limit applies in any case.[3] Catalog proof: Licensed Software may not be hosted in a virtual server environment unless expressly permitted.
Classic licences (legacy perpetual)
The Classic License came in three types, Single-user, Network and Enterprise, and each needed a serial number and authorization code. A Single-user entitlement “is assigned to one person and can only be used by the registered user”, who may use it “on two computers that they use”.[1] Network licences offer a pool of individual SketchUp allowances, called seats. They require certain ports and Trimble IP addresses to be reachable, and “You can check out a network license seat for up to a week, allowing offline use.”[8] “Classic licenses are only valid for the version that was purchased”, and moving to the current version requires a SketchUp Pro or Studio subscription. SketchUp provides no download links for unsupported versions.[6] Catalog proof: SketchUp Classic network seats can be checked out for up to a week.
Programs
- Subscription and renewal. Plans renew automatically. Cancelling means turning off auto-renew, and the plan stays usable until the end of the term. Annual plans “only qualify for a refund within 14 days of the initial purchase date or annual renewal date”; monthly renewals are not refundable.[7] Under the Offering Terms, renewals are at Trimble’s then-current rates.[12] Catalog proof: SketchUp annual plans refundable only within 14 days; Subscriptions auto-renew for the same duration unless 30 days notice; renewal at then-current rates.
- Support lifecycle. “SketchUp desktop products will become unsupported on January 31st of the third year after the product’s version year.” SketchUp 2023 and earlier are unsupported, and 2024 support ends on 2027-01-31.[6][13] Catalog proof: SketchUp desktop versions unsupported from 31 January three years after the version year.
- Free and educational use. Under the Offering Terms, Free Versions are limited to “a non-production environment and for non-commercial purposes” unless designated otherwise. Educational versions may not be used for any for-profit purpose.[12] Catalog proof: Free Versions non-production only; Trials and Betas 30 days for evaluation; Educational versions: no for-profit use or use by commercial entities.
- Trimble Connect storage. Subscription plans include unlimited Trimble Connect cloud storage, while free plans have 10 GB. After cancellation, files above 10 GB stay readable but no new files can be added.[7]
Out of scope
- SketchUp for Schools and higher-education agreements, which have separate educational use terms.
- The V-Ray License and Services Agreement (Chaos), which governs V-Ray inside Studio.
- Regional prices and reseller or enterprise agreements.
