Proton sells several products under one account system, and each product has its own free tier, its own paid single-service plan and a share of the larger bundles. This article describes the licensing of Proton VPN, Proton Pass and Proton Drive, the add-ons that extend plans, and the relevant counting rules.
Editions
Proton VPN
| Plan | Connections | Price, yearly billing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 device at a time | EUR 0 | Servers in 10 countries chosen automatically; medium speed[1] |
| VPN Plus | 10 devices at a time | EUR 4.49 a month for the first 12 months (EUR 53.88), then EUR 83.88 every 12 months; list EUR 9.99 monthly | 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries per the pricing page[1] |
| Proton Unlimited, Duo, Family | 10 devices per user at the same time | Included in the bundle | The Help Center says 15,000+ servers in 120+ countries[3] |
| VPN Essentials (business) | Per user | EUR 6.99 per user per month, minimum 2 users | Central control panel, stealth protocol[2] |
| VPN Professional (business) | Per user | EUR 9.99 per user per month, minimum 2 users | Adds dedicated server and IP at EUR 39.99 a month extra, SSO and SCIM[2] |
| VPN and Pass Professional | Per user | EUR 10.99 per user per month, minimum 3 users | Combines VPN Professional and Pass Professional[2] |
The two sources give different server counts, 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries on the pricing page and 15,000+ servers in 120+ countries in the plans article, so the figure is not a stable licensing term.[1][3] What both state consistently is the simultaneous-connection limit of 10 devices for paid users.
Proton Pass
| Plan | Limits | Price, yearly billing |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 user, unlimited logins, notes and cards, unlimited devices, 10 hide-my-email aliases (2 vaults)[1][3] | EUR 0 |
| Pass Plus | 1 user, unlimited devices and aliases, integrated 2FA authenticator, vault, link and item sharing, Dark Web Monitoring | EUR 2.99 a month, billed at EUR 35.88 every 12 months[1] |
| Proton Unlimited, Duo, Family | 50 vaults and unlimited aliases | Included in the bundle[3] |
| Pass Essentials (business) | Account protection for small teams, vault and item sharing, 2FA authenticator | EUR 1.99 per user per month, minimum 3 users[2] |
| Pass Professional (business) | Adds SSO and SCIM, detailed activity logs, enterprise policies, file attachment, SIEM integration, CLI, group sharing and SSH agent | EUR 4.49 per user per month, minimum 3 users[2] |
Proton Drive
Proton Drive Free offers 5 GB of encrypted storage and an online document and spreadsheet editor, and Drive Plus offers 200 GB for EUR 3.99 a month billed at EUR 47.88 every 12 months, with recovery of previous file versions.[1] Unlimited includes 500 GB shared with Mail.[3] Drive Professional is a business plan at EUR 7.99 per user per month with 1 TB per user and a command line interface for automated server backups.[2] All paid plans have encrypted storage shared between Proton Mail and Proton Drive.[7]
Metrics
Two units are specific to this group. The simultaneous VPN connection is the number of devices one user can connect at the same time, 1 on Free and 10 on paid plans; on business plans it is capped at 10 per user, cannot be redistributed between users and is switched fully on (10) or off (0).[3][4] See Simultaneous VPN connection. The dedicated VPN server is a fixed, static IP reserved exclusively for an organization’s team; once bought it must be assigned to a Gateway before anyone can connect.[4] See Dedicated VPN server. Pass counts users and vaults, Drive counts bytes of storage shared with Mail.
Counting and floors
- Minimum users. VPN Essentials and VPN Professional show a minimum of 2 users, and Pass Essentials, Pass Professional and VPN and Pass Professional a minimum of 3.[2]
- Dedicated servers. VPN Professional plans must always keep at least 1 dedicated server; removing the last one requires contacting support. Workspace plans can remove all dedicated servers. Removed servers generate a prorated credit and a 10-day cooling-down period before they can be reassigned.[4]
- Business VPN notice. Termination of VPN Essentials, Business or Enterprise requires notice at least 30 days before renewal, and the Dedicated IP feature is excluded from the 99.95 percent service level.[5]
- Meet. Free Meet allows up to 5 new meeting links per day, up to 50 participants, 60-minute calls and 1 active meeting; Meet Professional allows 24-hour meetings, up to 100 participants and recording, and Workspace Premium allows 250 participants.[3][2]
Virtualization and partitioning
Proton does not meter by device other than the VPN connection count. The Terms of Service prohibit sharing an account or login credentials unless the plan permits it, reselling or sublicensing the Services, and transferring an account, so a Pass vault or VPN seat is tied to an individual account.[5] Business Pass and VPN plans can be combined: VPN and Pass Professional is a combined plan, and the add-ons article lists VPN Professional and VPN and Pass Professional among the plans that can add users and dedicated servers.[4]
Cloud and entitlement mechanics
Add-ons
An add-on is an optional extra for an additional cost on an existing paid plan. Add-ons are managed under Customize plan in the account dashboard, and mid-cycle changes are prorated.[4] The article’s support matrix is:
| Add-on | Plans that support it |
|---|---|
| Extra users | Mail Essentials, legacy Mail Professional, Workspace Standard and Premium, VPN Professional, VPN and Pass Professional |
| Extra custom domains | Workspace Standard and Premium only |
| Scribe writing assistant | Any Proton for Business plan, per user; included with Workspace Premium, Duo, Family and Visionary |
| Lumo Plus | Unlimited, Duo, Family and business plans; included with Workspace Premium, Visionary and Lifetime |
| Dedicated VPN servers | Workspace Standard and Premium, VPN Professional, VPN and Pass Professional |
| Meet Professional | Nearly all existing plans; included with Workspace Standard, Workspace Premium and Visionary |
Source: Proton Help Center, Understanding Proton add-ons.[4] Proton Free cannot be customized, and single-service Plus plans, Unlimited, Duo and Family can only add Lumo Plus.[4]
Proration
Adding an add-on charges only for the remainder of the current billing cycle, applied when the Primary Admin makes the change; if another admin adds add-ons the subscription renews completely. Removing users, domains or servers produces a prorated account credit, while removing a Lumo add-on schedules the subscription to renew without it in the next cycle.[4] For business users the removal credit is based on the time remaining on the original contract.[6]
Scribe
An admin can switch Scribe on or off per user under Users and addresses. To cancel the add-on every user must be switched off first and the seat count then set to zero in Customize plan.[4] Scribe is a writing assistant whose output Proton says may not be factually correct and carries no warranty.[5]
Payment
The business plans FAQ lists cards, PayPal, Bitcoin, cash and bank transfers, and the Help Center says Bitcoin does not appear at first sign-up and requires upgrading from a free account.[2][8]
Programs
- Plan add-ons, summarized above.
- Free tiers. Free VPN, Pass and Drive accounts exist, and free accounts inactive for 12 months can be deleted after notices at 30, 15 and 7 days.[5]
Out of scope
This article does not cover the apps’ open-source licences, VPN server logging policy, Proton Authenticator or Wallet, or Lumo’s own terms. It also does not cover how Proton for Business counts users across products. That is in Proton for Business plans and user licensing, and renewal and refund rules are in Proton Terms of Service, billing and refunds.
