Proton’s personal plans are the subscriptions that an individual or household buys for Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, Pass and related services. The Help Center presents them as Proton Free, Proton Mail Plus, Proton Unlimited, Proton Duo, Proton Family and Proton Visionary, and notes that organizations should look at Proton for Business instead.[1] The pricing page adds single-service Plus plans for VPN, Pass and Drive, grouped under tabs, and a Bundles tab that shows Free, Unlimited and Duo.[2]
Editions
| Plan | Users | Storage | Addresses | Custom domains | Price, yearly billing (monthly billing) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Free | 1 | 1 GB Mail, 5 GB Drive | 1 | none | EUR 0[2] |
| Mail Plus | 1 | 15 GB shared with Drive | 10 | 1 | EUR 3.99 a month (EUR 4.99)[1] |
| Proton Unlimited | 1 | 500 GB shared | 15 | 3 | EUR 9.99 (EUR 12.99)[1] |
| Proton Duo | 2 | 2 TB shared | 30 | 3 | EUR 14.99 (EUR 19.99)[1] |
| Proton Family | 6 | 3 TB shared | 90 | 3 | EUR 23.99 (EUR 29.99)[1] |
| Proton Visionary | 6 | 6 TB | 100 | 10 | EUR 29.99 (EUR 39.99)[1] |
The yearly figures are shown as a monthly equivalent. Mail Plus, for example, is EUR 4.99 a month or EUR 47.88 for one year, equal to EUR 3.99 a month.[1] The single-service plans on the pricing page are VPN Plus (EUR 4.49 a month for the first 12 months, EUR 53.88, then EUR 83.88 every 12 months), Pass Plus (EUR 2.99 a month, EUR 35.88 a year) and Drive Plus (200 GB, EUR 3.99 a month).[2]
What the free plan includes
Proton Free includes Mail with one address, up to 1 GB of Mail storage and a send limit of 150 messages a day; Calendar with 3 personal calendars; VPN with 1 connection and 10 automatically chosen countries; Drive with up to 5 GB; Pass with 2 vaults and 10 hide-my-email aliases; and limited versions of Wallet, Lumo and Meet.[1] The free allowance can be unlocked in full only by completing setup actions: Mail storage rises from 500 MB to 1 GB and Drive storage from 2 GB to 5 GB.[7]
What the paid plans add
Mail Plus adds 15 GB of storage shared with Drive, 10 addresses, 1 custom domain, a short @pm.me address, IMAP and SMTP support through Proton Mail Bridge, priority support and 10 hide-my-email aliases, while keeping VPN, Drive, Pass and Meet at their free levels.[1] Proton Unlimited bundles the Plus versions of Mail, Calendar, Drive, Pass, VPN and Wallet in one subscription with 500 GB of storage shared between Mail and Drive, 15 addresses, 3 custom domains, unlimited hide-my-email aliases, VPN on 10 devices per user at the same time and 50 Pass vaults.[1] Duo and Family keep those features and add the Scribe writing assistant and the larger shared storage pools.[1] Visionary is described as an exclusive plan for early supporters and includes paid versions of future Proton services, and the storage article calls it a legacy plan not usually available for purchase.[1][7]
Metrics
The personal plans are counted by account, with storage, addresses and custom domains as allowances. In Duo and Family, the primary administrator manages billing and memberships and allocates storage among members; the Family group defaults to 500 GB for the administrator account, and the rest of the 3 TB can be reallocated at any time.[3] Only the administrator can create additional addresses on a family plan and assign them to users.[3] A paid plan allows VPN connections on 10 devices per user at the same time, while Free allows one.[1]
Counting and floors
Group sizes are fixed. A Family group has a maximum of six members, so the administrator can invite up to five others, and Duo is capped at two users; the Help Center states that these group sizes are not extended by a per-user add-on purchase.[3][9] Existing Proton users can be invited to Duo, Family or Visionary plans, and their accounts stay private and cannot be changed to non-private.[4] An invited user who already has a Proton Account with a custom domain must remove it before joining a Family plan.[3]
The Terms of Service forbid sharing an account or login credentials except where the plan permits it,.[10] A subscription is linked to the account it was bought for and cannot be moved to another account.[10]
Virtualization and partitioning
No device or environment partitioning applies. The relevant distinction is between a consumer plan and a business plan: the Terms say all plans other than those on the business plans page and the Workspace plans are intended for consumers, and a subscriber represents that it acts as a consumer.[10] A family plan is therefore for personal use and not a route to buying multi-user business seats.
Cloud and entitlement mechanics
Upgrading and switching. A customer can upgrade from Free, switch to another paid plan, change the billing period or cancel at any time from the account settings. Switching to another plan takes effect immediately, and a downgrade to another paid plan converts unused time into prorated credit that is applied to future payments.[6] If a customer cancels and goes to Free, the plan stays active until the end of the current billing period and does not renew.[6] If the account exceeds the lower plan’s limits, some features can stop working; a Mail inbox above the 1 GB Free limit cannot send or receive new email until space is freed.[6]
Family removal. Members removed from a family group keep their data and move to a 30-day trial of Proton Unlimited.[3] The trial is currently only available on leaving a family group, and adding a payment method during the trial charges the card immediately, by default for a monthly Unlimited subscription.[5]
Billing terms. Subscriptions renew automatically for the purchased period at the then-current price, can be refunded within 30 days of the first purchase when bought directly from Proton, and move to a delinquent restricted state if a payment fails and the account exceeds Free limits.[10]
Plans bought before May 2022. Customers on older bundles on 2022-05-25 were upgraded automatically to the best-matching plan and keep the converted price while they stay on that plan and billing period.[1]
Programs
- Student discount: students in the US, UK, France and Germany can use Student Beans for 12-month plans; the Help Center lists 50 percent off Mail Plus, 70 percent off VPN Plus and 62 percent off Unlimited, as updated on 2026-01-28.[8]
- Proton Unlimited 30-day trial after leaving a family group, described above.
- Lumo Plus. Lumo Plus is included with Workspace Premium, Visionary and Lifetime and is an add-on for Unlimited, Duo, Family and single-service Plus plans, or can be bought without any other Proton subscription.[9]
- Pre-May 2022 plan conversions.
Out of scope
This article does not cover Lifetime Accounts beyond the Terms rule that they can be traded only through Proton, the Proton Wallet terms, or app-store purchases. It does not describe business plans, which are in Proton for Business plans and user licensing, or the product-by-product detail in Proton VPN, Pass, Drive and add-on licensing. Renewals and refunds are in Proton Terms of Service, billing and refunds. Private and non-private user accounts are a feature of organizations on business plans and Visionary, apart from invited family users, whose accounts are always private.[11]
