Alteryx licensing covers the terms under which Alteryx licenses its analytics and automation software. The main products are Alteryx Designer, a desktop workflow tool; Alteryx Server, an on-premises server for running and scheduling workflows; and the Alteryx One platform, which packages them with cloud products. All are licensed under a single End User License Agreement (EULA). It grants a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence for the customer’s internal business purposes, limited by “the number of Authorized Users and/or permitted number of Cores (as applicable)”.[1] The duration of each licence is the License Term stated in the Order Form.[1] The two classic metrics are therefore a named user count for Designer and a per-core count for Server. Since May 2025 Alteryx sells these capabilities as Alteryx One editions with user roles and a pool of automation runs.[4][5]
Editions
Alteryx One is sold in three editions. Alteryx describes three controls for sizing a deployment: the edition, the user roles, and the automation runs.[4]
| Edition | Seats | User types | Automation runs | Price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 1 to 10, price per user[4] | “Basic Users Only” on the pricing page;[4] Full User role only in the help documentation[6] | None listed[4] | USD 250 per user per month, billed annually[4] |
| Professional | 1+ users[4] | Basic and Full[4] | 50 included, more purchasable[4] | Contact sales[4] |
| Enterprise | 10+ users[4] | Viewer, Basic and Full[4] | 15k included, more purchasable[4] | Contact sales[4] |
Starter is cloud only, while Professional adds Designer Desktop and hybrid deployment. Enterprise adds Alteryx Server, advanced scheduling, enterprise governance and analytic apps, and “Includes free viewer licenses”.[4] Alteryx’s pricing FAQ describes the change from earlier licensing. Customers no longer buy “separate Designer seats and Server cores”. Instead they “choose an edition, assign user roles, and size automation capacity”.[4] Customers with Designer-only licences generally move to Professional Edition, and customers using Designer and Server typically move to Enterprise Edition.[4] Catalog SKUs: Starter, Professional, Enterprise, Additional Automation Capacity, Data Packages, Designer (license key), Server (license key), Additional server CPU cores, Desktop Automation and Data Sets. Edition detail is in Alteryx One editions and user roles licensing.
Metrics
| Alteryx term | Catalog row | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized User / User-Based License | Authorized User | Designer and other user-limited products: one Authorized User on one personal computer[2] |
| Core / Core-Based License | Core | Server: one server per licence, Cores up to the Order Form number[2] |
| Full User | Full User | Alteryx One, all editions[6] |
| Basic User | Basic User | Alteryx One Professional and Enterprise[6] |
| Viewer | Viewer | Alteryx One Enterprise only, unlimited number[6] |
| Automation run | Automation run | Workflows, plans and apps run by schedule, API or viewer interaction[4] |
Counting / floors
Authorized Users. Customers must identify their Authorized Users to Alteryx, for example by email address. “The total count of Authorized Users must not exceed the number of User-Based Licenses purchased”.[1] A User-Based License “may not be shared by multiple users or used concurrently on different computers”.[2] Licences may be reassigned when people leave or no longer need the product, but not so often that one licence is in effect shared.[1] Catalog: A User-Based License may not be shared or used concurrently; Authorized Users must be identified and may not exceed licences purchased; User-Based Licenses may be reassigned, but not to share them.
Cores. A Core is “an individual physical processor” in the CPU. Hyper-threading and similar technologies do not increase the count.[2] A Core-Based License may be installed on one server only.[2] The licensing system flags a Server licence activated on a machine with more cores than licensed as out of compliance.[7] Catalog: A Core-Based License covers one server up to the licensed Cores; Hyper-threading does not increase the Core count; Server on a machine with more cores than licensed is flagged out of compliance.
Roles and runs. In Alteryx One, the Starter Edition has a 10-user limit, Viewers are unlimited in Enterprise, and administrators need no entitlement.[6] Failed runs, validation runs and design-time runs do not count as automation runs.[4] If usage exceeds the contracted amount, Alteryx says it will work with the customer to align the subscription with actual needs.[4] This is in effect a negotiated true-up.
Activation and license keys
Licences for Designer and Server are delivered as license keys. Alteryx uses FlexNet Operations as a third-party licensing service. Keys are managed in the Alteryx Licensing & Downloads portal, and an Alteryx License Server is available for local deployment.[9] From version 2025.1, Designer and Server can instead be licensed by signing in with Alteryx One. All licence management then happens in Alteryx One, and users need an Admin, Full or Basic role.[8] Online, offline and License Server activation are described in Alteryx Designer and Server license keys and activation.
Virtualization & partitioning
The EULA prohibits customers from placing the products on a network service or “virtualize a user-based license” unless an Order Form or Alteryx in writing allows it.[1] For Server, the Core definition counts physical processors in the CPU. The License Metrics document does not separately address virtual CPUs.[2] Catalog: A user-based license may not be virtualized without written permission. See virtualization and partitioning.
Cloud / BYOL
Alteryx One cloud products are covered by the Cloud and AI Terms exhibit of the Deployment Terms. On-premises Designer and Server are covered by the On-Premise Terms exhibit.[3] No published Alteryx document grants a right to run Designer or Server licences on a third-party cloud as a separate bring-your-own-licence program. The EULA does prohibit use “as part of a hosted service” and on behalf of third parties.[1]
Programs
- Trial License. Evaluation use on one personal computer for 30 days, or another period Alteryx grants.[2]
- Non-Commercial License. Unpaid one-year licences for verified educational and not-for-profit use.[2]
- Alteryx One transition. The mapping of existing Designer and Server customers to editions at renewal.[4]
- Reseller purchase. Reseller purchases stay under the EULA, and a reseller cannot change it.[1]
Contract and compliance
On reasonable request the customer must certify compliance in writing. Alteryx may, at its own expense and “no more than once every 12 months”, verify use, installation and deployment itself or through an independent third party.[1] Order Forms are non-cancelable and fees are non-refundable unless stated otherwise.[1] Customers in North or South America contract with Alteryx, Inc. under California law. All others contract with Alteryx UK Ltd. under the laws of England and Wales.[1] Third-party data bought through Alteryx carries further limits under the Syndicated Data Terms.[10] See Alteryx End User License Agreement, software license audit and effective license position. Catalog: Alteryx may verify compliance once every 12 months.
Out of scope
This article does not cover the legacy products Alteryx Connect, Promote and Analytics Hub, the Trifacta-derived Designer Cloud features, or Alteryx’s public-sector licence agreement. The service-level agreements and professional services are also out of scope, except where they affect licence counts.
