Grammarly Pro seats and true-up billing

This article is about how Grammarly counts and bills seats on its Pro, Plus and Business team plans and in Superhuman accounts, including true-up billing. For contract terms see the Terms of Service article. It is not legal advice.

On This Page

A Grammarly seat is the place a paying member occupies on a team subscription. The Support Center describes team purchases by seat count and member count: admins buy seats on the Subscription page, invite members who take them, and change the count with the Update plan control.[2] This article records how the count behaves in practice for Grammarly Pro and for the older Plus and Business plans. See Seat.

Editions and price per seat

Grammarly Pro is offered monthly at USD 30 per member, quarterly at USD 60 per member per three months and annually at USD 144 per member per year, an average of USD 12 per member per month. The Support Center states that “Grammarly Pro replaces the Grammarly Business plan,” and that Pro plans allow up to 149 seats, with additional seats for more members charged at the same rates and prorated.[1] The default currency is the US dollar, with euros, pounds and rupees offered at checkout. Accepted payment methods are cards (not Visa Electron, Mastercard Maestro or Interac), PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay; Grammarly does not offer gift subscriptions, lifetime plans or one-time plans.[1]

The pricing page adds that a Business purchase for 10 or more members on an annual plan can request an invoice, payable by ACH, wire, card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, but not PayPal.[10] Grammarly Pro plans are billed as one payment for all seats.[4]

Premium and Pro

Grammarly Premium, sold through the App Store and Google Play, includes 1,000 monthly generative AI prompts and no team features. Pro doubles the prompts to 2,000 per month and adds team functionality for up to 149 members, style guides, brand tones, knowledge share, snippets and analytics.[4] Premium subscribers who bought on grammarly.com have been upgraded gradually to Pro since March 2025 at the same billing amount and with no opt-out; store-purchased Premium is not changing.[9] See Premium to Pro migration.

Counting seats

Adding. A Pro team can invite Free, Premium and other Pro users. Business and Grammarly for Education users cannot be invited to a Pro team.[4] When all seats are allotted, the payment method on file is charged a prorated amount for each further seat needed.[5] The charge for additional seats is prorated for the remaining days of the period, and the next billing cycle charges the full amount for the updated count on the renewal date.[2]

Removing. A removed member who had a Free account reverts to Free; one who had their own Pro subscription can continue using it. Members with the admin role must be unassigned before removal.[4] Reducing seats takes effect at the next billing cycle, and a plan cannot be cut to fewer seats than active members; members must be removed first. Unused-seat refunds are requested through a support form.[2]

Joining a second team. A Pro user who joins another Pro team has their own subscription paused, or is removed from the current team and added to the new one, depending on whether the user is the only member; the user may request a refund of the original subscription. A Pro admin must hand over the admin role first.[4]

Ownership. Pro and Plus accounts with two or more members can transfer ownership to another member from the Subscription page. In Business, Enterprise and Education plans, ownership is held by members with the admin role.[7]

Superhuman accounts

A Superhuman admin account grants access to the products in the suite from one place. Members are invited as free or paid: the number of free users is unlimited, paid seats are allocated by editing the member, and removing someone who held a paid seat does not reduce the paid seat count, so the seat can be given to a new member.[6] Seat changes made through the associated Grammarly account apply across the suite.[2] See Free member.

True-up billing

True-up billing “allows you to invite more team members to your Grammarly team now, and pay for their seats later”. Invited members can start using Grammarly without an immediate charge.[3] The rules are:

  • It is included in Pro, Plus and Business plans and managed by admins, but is not available to Business teams paying by invoice; for Pro it starts with the third seat.[3]
  • The number of additional seats in use and their charge date appear on the Subscription page. The charge is a prorated amount per seat for the remaining period, and on renewal the payment method is charged for the updated seat count.[3]
  • Admins can pay immediately by updating the plan size, or avoid the charge by removing the additional seats at least 24 hours before the scheduled charge date.[3]
  • Reminders are emailed 30 days and two days before the charge, with an in-product notice 48 hours before.[3]

For inventory work, a team’s member list can therefore exceed its paid seats for a period, and the subscription page shows the additional seats as a separate number. See Additional seat (true-up) and True-up billing.

Domain-based joining

For Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans bought through the Sales team, people with individual accounts on the organization’s domain can discover and join the subscription or request to join; the option is on by default for eligible SAML SSO accounts, and requests are cancelled after 30 days without action. Admins can also see people already using Grammarly and invite them, and individual Free or Pro accounts with no stored documents are added instantly.[8]

Changing and ending a subscription

Admins change plan settings on the Subscription page, with the new price starting from the next billing cycle, but a subscription bought through Sales is changed through the Customer Success Manager.[11] Cancelling stops renewal while access to paid features continues to the end of the period.[12] The Terms of Service say payments are otherwise non-refundable.[13]

Out of scope

This article does not cover Enterprise or Education End User accounts, which are set by Order and covered in the administration article, nor the Superhuman Mail and Docs products.
