Grammarly Enterprise, Education and administration controls

This article is about Grammarly's Enterprise and Grammarly for Education licences and the plan requirements for its administration controls: SAML SSO, managed mode, domain controls, data loss prevention and groups. For seats on Pro see the Pro seats article. It is not legal advice.

On This Page

Grammarly’s organization-wide licences are not self-service. The Enterprise card on the pricing page offers “Contact Sales” and describes the plan as Grammarly “available through Superhuman Go”, with everything in Pro plus proactive AI, dedicated support, BYOK encryption, custom roles and permissions, data loss prevention and cost center visibility.[2] The Enterprise page says that Grammarly is now delivered through Superhuman Go, which combines Grammarly’s writing assistance with agents that work across other tools.[1] The Superhuman suite page lists an Enterprise plan with a “Custom” price, adding analytics and reporting, advanced security and admin controls, SAML single sign-on, custom roles and permissions, data loss prevention, BYOK encryption and a dedicated support team.[15]

Contract and counting

Enterprise-tier purchases are governed by the Customer Business Agreement, not the Terms of Service. The customer creates End User accounts in the numbers and types stated in the Order, each for one individual only, and an account can be reassigned if the earlier user no longer needs access.[3] See End User account. Seats on Sales-purchased subscriptions are changed through the Customer Success Manager, and so are plan changes.[17] The Go Enterprise License Agreement is said by the Support Center to provide access to Superhuman Go and Grammarly; admins see the number of available seats above the member list and can invite up to 10 email addresses at a time.[14] An organization that buys through a reseller executes Orders with the reseller and relies on the Customer Business Agreement as its end user licence agreement.[3]

Single sign-on and managed mode

The Support Center lists SAML single sign-on as included in Grammarly Business, Enterprise and Grammarly for Education plans, set up by admins or members with custom roles. Once SSO is activated, access to the organization’s subscription is defined by access assignment in the identity provider, and existing members cannot log in until the Grammarly app is assigned to them. New members are added by assigning the app, which creates an account at first SSO sign-in if the person has none; invitations from the admin panel do not let someone join until the identity provider grants access.[4] Invite links are available only for teams with unique domains and not for generic domains such as gmail.com.[16]

Managed Mode ensures that only users who belong to the organization’s subscription can sign in to the Grammarly clients, so employees cannot use personal accounts at work. It requires SSO and an enrollment token, which is configured through the registry on Windows, a configuration profile on macOS or browser extension policy.[5]

Enterprise controls

  • Domain controls. Enterprise admins can block Grammarly on listed internet domains for the entire organization or for specific groups, in the Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions and in Grammarly for Windows and Mac.[6]
  • Data Loss Prevention. In Enterprise plans, DLP sanitizes data types such as email addresses, URLs, phone numbers, card numbers, US Social Security numbers, UK National Insurance numbers, Canadian Social Insurance numbers and IBANs before text is sent for suggestion processing. The configuration is changed through the Customer Success Manager.[7]
  • Groups. Groups are available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education plans, can be created manually, by file, or by identity provider assignment through SAML or SCIM group provisioning, and let admins customize style guides and snippets by team and view analytics by group.[8]
  • Feature access. Admins can enable features for all members or select groups, and some, such as the Editor and docs with agents, only on Sales-purchased Business, Enterprise and Education plans.[13]

The pricing page’s comparison table also names SCIM, audit logs API, session timeout, group-level security controls and a Feature Management Hub among its security features, but its flattened text does not state which plan columns include each, so this article does not assign them.[2]

Domain-based discovery

For Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans purchased through Sales, admins can let people with individual accounts on the organization’s domain discover and join the subscription, see a list of people already using Grammarly sorted by engagement, and invite them. SAML SSO accounts have the discovery option on by default, and membership requests lapse after 30 days.[12] For an inventory, this list is a source of unmanaged individual accounts; see Streamlined joining and domain capture.

Grammarly for Education

Grammarly for Education is sold to institutions: the Support Center says to contact the Sales team for a quote, and that students and educators can redeem a separate offer for an individual Grammarly Pro subscription.[9] The Education page lists Authorship, which lets instructors see the sources of text in a student’s document, and writing assistance in several languages, and invites contact with Education Sales.[11] Members join a school licence by signing in through an identity provider, signing up with a school email address (after which they are prompted to join) or accepting an invitation.[10] Education users cannot be invited to a Pro team.[18] The Acceptable Use Policy treats Education enterprise accounts like Business enterprise accounts for document and word check limits, applied per end user.[19] See Grammarly for Education.

Renewal and termination mechanics

For an Order under the Customer Business Agreement, the subscription renews automatically for an equal term at Superhuman’s then-current rates unless the Order says otherwise. Superhuman gives at least 30 days’ notice of fee changes before renewal, and either party may end an Order at term end with at least 30 days’ written notice.[3] On termination, End User accounts may be deleted or downgraded to a lower subscription tier unless the customer has asked for data return or destruction beforehand.[3] The pricing page states that Grammarly’s SOC 2 (Type 2) report covers security, privacy, availability and confidentiality controls.[2]

Account ownership and consolidation

In Business, Enterprise and Education plans, ownership of the account is held by members with the admin role, whereas Pro and Plus accounts with two or more members can change the owner from the Subscription page.[20] Individuals who registered with an organization email address are subject to that organization’s control under the Terms of Service, which allows account merging when the organization buys a subscription.[21]
