Gen Digital business and small business editions

This article is about the business-oriented editions of Gen Digital products: Norton Small Business, Avast Business (Small Office Protection and the Business Hub), Avira Prime for small businesses, and the managed service provider and technician editions. It does not cover consumer subscriptions, which are covered in the brand articles.

On This Page

Gen Digital business editions are the products Gen Digital positions for businesses, as distinct from household subscriptions. They share one rule from the License and Services Agreement (LSA): small business offerings are licensed only for businesses with fifty or fewer employees, and only people employed by the business may use them for internal business operations.[1] Below that ceiling the counting units differ by brand, as the sections below show. Consumer products, by contrast, may be used only for consumer, household and non-commercial purposes, and using a consumer product for business purposes is a listed prohibited act.[1]

Norton Small Business

Norton Small Business is sold on the Norton site in three tiers by number of employees: up to 3, up to 5 and up to 10.[2] Each tier is shown as covering 2 devices per user.[2] At retrieval the page showed these renewal prices: USD 119.99 per year for up to 3 employees, USD 179.99 for up to 5 employees and USD 249.99 for up to 10 employees, with lower first-year prices.[2] The page lists benefits such as virus removal assistance, financial monitoring, social media monitoring, business tech support and data protection, and a 60-day money back guarantee on each tier.[2] A separate banner offer on the page for up to 5 employees shows a renewal price of USD 299.99 per year, which is not recorded in the catalog.[2]

Tier Devices Renewal price at retrieval Catalog row
Up to 3 employees 2 per user USD 119.99 per year Norton Small Business up to 3
Up to 5 employees 2 per user USD 179.99 per year Norton Small Business up to 5
Up to 10 employees 2 per user USD 249.99 per year Norton Small Business up to 10

Counting works from the employee tier, so the number of employees using the product determines the plan and the devices follow at two per user.[2] A business that outgrows its tier should treat a switch as a purchase decision, because the LSA fixes the entitlement at the devices and users chosen at purchase.[1] Catalog: Small business employee tier, rules employee limit, tiers and devices, program 60-day guarantee.

Avast Business

Small Office Protection

Avast describes Small Office Protection for businesses with 1 to 10 devices, covering laptops, mobile devices, computers and tablets, while its Essential, Premium and Ultimate Business Security options managed from the cloud-based Business Hub are shown for businesses with 11 or more devices.[4] The Small Office Protection page shows a licence valid for up to 10 devices and invites customers needing more devices to contact sales.[4] Catalog: Avast Small Office Protection, rule up to 10 devices.

Business Hub subscriptions

In the Avast Business Hub, services are attached to a wallet key, and purchases through the sales team yield either a wallet key or an activation code to be activated in the Hub.[3] Services are billed on different units: antivirus and patch management per device, cloud backup in 100 GB increments, premium remote control per connection (unlimited connections or one at a time), and basic remote control as a free service of five 15-minute sessions per month.[3] VPN is included with the Premium and Ultimate Business Security bundles, as is USB protection.[3] Catalog: Prepaid device seat, rules prepaid seats, per-device billing.

Two subscription types exist. Prepaid subscriptions cover a number of devices (“seats”) for a set time such as one or three years, and when they expire the services on the devices are turned off until renewal. A customer can buy, renew, start a trial or change the number of seats on the Subscriptions tab.[3] Flexible Billing, also called Pay As You Go, charges for the services in use each day at a cost per day per service, and a service disabled on a device for a full day or longer is not charged. It is available to partners with an approved credit limit, and if payment problems pause the subscription, service stops first for the newest devices.[3] Catalog: Flexible Billing device-day, Flexible Billing, rule daily charges.

Avira Prime for small businesses

Avira offers Avira Prime for small businesses at 5 or 25 devices, with one subscription covering up to 25 devices, and states that the product is not compatible with Windows Server.[6] The page also notes that the earlier Avira Business products were being phased out by the end of 2021.[6] Details of the Avira agreement are in Gen Digital Avira licensing. Catalog: Avira Prime 5 devices, Avira Prime 25 devices.

Managed service providers and technicians

The Avast, AVG and CCleaner EULA contains the terms for business channels.[5]

  • MSP licences. The licence covers Avast Business Services, CCleaner Business Edition, CCleaner Cloud for Business, CloudCare, Managed Workplace and similar solutions used to provide managed services to third parties. It is limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable, without a right to sublicense, and runs for the Subscription Period.[5] The provider must require each customer to bind itself to the then-current EULA and to a service agreement.[5] Catalog: MSP licences, rule customer terms.
  • Technician Edition. The customer may let the number of technicians named in its order use the product to repair devices, each on one device at a time, and the product must be removed from the device before control returns to the user.[5] Catalog: Technician, rule one device at a time.
  • CCleaner Business Edition. The CCleaner version of the EULA carries the same definitions of Business and Consumer Solutions, and its MSP section names CCleaner Business Edition and CCleaner Cloud for Business.[7] Catalog: CCleaner text.

Compliance observations

  • Employee ceiling. A business with more than fifty employees falls outside “small business” offerings under the LSA, so a Norton Small Business subscription is not a valid licence for a larger company.[1]
  • Consumer products on business machines. Norton consumer plans, and free Avast, AVG and CCleaner products, are not licensed for business use.[1][5]
  • Seat reconciliation. In the Avast Business Hub the number of seats bought is the licence quantity, and expired prepaid subscriptions switch services off, so the Hub’s device list and subscription quantities are the primary record.[3]
  • MSP customers. Each managed customer must accept the EULA, so an MSP’s records should include the acceptance chain.[5]
