Figma seat types are the unit of Figma’s licensing model. “Every member or guest on a paid Figma plan has one seat.” The seat type, Full, Dev, Collab or View, determines which Figma products that person can use.[2] A Figma plan (Starter, Professional, Organization or Enterprise) sets the features available inside each product and the price of each seat type.[3] A licence position for Figma is therefore a count of seats by type and plan, read from the admin dashboard.
The model took effect with Figma’s updated billing model of March 2025. Before then, organisations that provisioned users through SCIM set three separate attributes, figmaPermission, devModePermission and figjamPermission. Figma allowed that configuration to be mapped to the new seat types only until March 2026.[14] Catalog proof: SCIM seat attributes had to move to the new seat types by March 2026.
Editions
Starter
The Starter plan is free. Each Starter team has a single folder with up to 3 Figma Design and Sites files, 3 FigJam files and 3 Slides files, plus unlimited drafts. Version history is kept for 30 days. Dev Mode, team libraries, SSO and AI image tools are not available.[5] Collaborators can be invited to drafts with view access only.[5] Figma Make has no file limit on Starter, but use is limited by the AI credit allowance of 150 a day and up to 500 a month.[5][1]
Professional
Professional is “Figma’s entry-level paid plan”. It holds a single team with unlimited files and folders, team libraries, unlimited version history, AI tools, Figma Sites publishing and Dev Mode.[6] Each plan can have an unlimited number of members and collaborators. Cost depends on the billing term, monthly or annual, and on the number of Full, Dev and Collab seats.[6]
Organization
Organization adds unlimited teams, branching and merging, library analytics, shared fonts, SSO, activity logs and centralised administration. It is an annual subscription with quarterly invoices.[7][9] Organizations can invite members and guests. A guest is “anyone in the organization that doesn’t have a company email”.[7] Drafts belong to the organization, which can claim them when a member leaves.[7]
Enterprise
Enterprise adds SAML SSO with SCIM seat assignment, workspaces, billing groups “for segmented financial oversight”, guest access controls, link expiry and deployment through Microsoft Installer.[8][9] It is billed like Organization, as an annual subscription with quarterly invoices. Governance+ is an Enterprise add-on. It adds IP allowlists, network access restrictions, enforced 2FA, extended idle session timeout and a discovery pipeline for e-discovery.[12]

Source: Compare and manage seats in Figma.[2] The Full seat is the only seat that can edit Figma Design files, and Figma Design cannot be bought without it.[4] The Figma Sites and Figma Motion betas are available on Full seats. The Figma Buzz beta is available on all seats.[1] The Dev seat gives Dev Mode, FigJam and Slides, with view and comment access to Figma Design. The Collab seat gives FigJam and Slides, with basic inspection only.[4] The View seat is free and gives view and comment access. View users can also export files and access redlines.[4]
Seat versus permission
The seat sets product access. File permissions are separate, and “a paid seat gives someone the ability to use certain Figma products, while permissions control what they can do within specific files or folders”.[6] A person with a Full seat cannot edit a file shared with them as can view. A person with edit permission on a Figma Design file but only a Collab seat cannot edit it either until they get a Full seat.[2]
Counting / floors
One seat per person. On a paid plan “every member or guest” has exactly one seat, so external guests in an organization are counted like members.[2] View seats are free and “do not need to be purchased”.[3] Catalog proof: Every member or guest on a paid plan has one seat; View seats are free.
Joining a plan. On Starter and Professional, people who join through a plan invite link get a View seat automatically. Admins can set the seat type when inviting by email.[13] Paid seats are added through admin action, seat requests or approval settings, as described in Figma billing, seat requests and true-ups.
Business use. Under the Terms of Service, free accounts may be used for business or personal purposes, “but paid accounts are for business use only”. Authorized Users include employees and contractors.[15] Catalog proof: Paid accounts are for business use only.
Floors. No minimum seat purchase is published for any plan.
Virtualization & partitioning
Not applicable. Seats are per person, and the plan structure (teams, workspaces, billing groups) organises people and content rather than licences.
Cloud / BYOL
Not applicable. Figma is hosted by Figma. Figma for Government gives “the full capabilities of Figma’s Enterprise plan in a dedicated, government-compliant environment” with FedRAMP Moderate authorisation. It requires SAML SSO and excludes audio chat, partner integrations, UI kits, beta features and most AI tools outside Figma Make.[11]
Programs
Figma for Education
Figma for Education “provides free Figma access to students and educators”. K-12 students and educators get the Enterprise plan through their school or district. Higher-education, approved bootcamp and secondary or high-school students and educators get the Professional plan.[10] Applicants must use their school email. Non-teaching school staff, self-directed learners, startups, edtech companies and non-profits do not qualify.[10] Status lasts two years for K-12 and higher education and 6 months for bootcamps, and can be renewed by reapplying.[4] Figma states that it has no non-profit discounts.[4] Catalog proof: Education users get the Professional or Enterprise plan free.
