Canva licensing is the set of terms under which Canva provides its online visual communication platform, its library of stock content and templates, its AI-powered features, and desktop applications such as Affinity. The Terms of Use describe Canva as a platform for designing logos, posters, presentations, videos, documents, whiteboards and websites, delivered through canva.com, mobile apps, desktop applications and affinity.studio.[1] Canva sells the platform as subscriptions: Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans for individuals and organisations, with separate offerings for schools, universities and nonprofits.[3]
Two kinds of licence matter to a software asset manager. The first is the right to use the Service itself, which the Terms of Use grant as “a non-exclusive, limited, non-transferable, freely revocable license” for business or personal use.[1] Catalog proof: Terms of Use licence is revocable and for business or personal use. The second is the licence to use library content (photos, graphics, video, audio, fonts and templates) in designs, which the Content License Agreement grants when a design is exported, one licence for each piece of content.[2] Catalog proof: Content licence issued on Export. A subscription changes how the second kind is paid for: a Free user pays a one-off fee to use a piece of Pro content in a design, while a Pro subscriber receives the licence at no extra cost.[16]
The contracting entity depends on the billing address: Canva US, Inc for the United States, Canva UK Operations Ltd for the United Kingdom, and Canva Pty Ltd for all other countries.[1] Catalog proof: Contracting entity depends on billing address.
Editions
The pricing page lists four plans for individuals and businesses, with education plans shown on a separate tab.[3] The table summarises how each is counted. Prices are localised: on 2026-10-03 the page showed EUR prices for a euro-area location, and the Terms of Use state that pricing “may vary by location”.[1][3]
| Plan | Who it is for | How it is counted | Catalog |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | Anyone | One person; no charge | Canva Free |
| Canva Pro | Solo creators | One person; “Only one person can use a Canva Pro account” | Canva Pro |
| Canva Business | Individuals and small to medium teams | Per person, billed by seat or by team member | Canva Business |
| Canva Teams | Legacy subscribers only | Per member at grandfathered pricing | Canva Teams (legacy) |
| Canva Enterprise | Large or multi-team organisations | Users on an Order Form; price by team size | Canva Enterprise |
| Canva Education | Eligible K-12 teachers, students and schools | Free while eligible | Canva Education |
| Canva Nonprofits | Eligible registered nonprofits | One free team of up to 50 users | Canva Nonprofits |
| Canva Campus | Universities and colleges | Enterprise staff licences plus free student seats | Canva Campus |
Canva Pro is limited to a single user; the pricing FAQ directs teams to Canva Business.[3] Canva Teams, the former team plan, “is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades”; existing subscribers keep their pricing, including for new members, but cannot resubscribe once they cancel.[7] Canva Enterprise is sold through the sales team: there is no free trial and pricing “will depend on the size of your team”.[8] Plans, seats and billing are covered in Canva plans, seats and billing.
Metrics
Canva does not publish a licence definitions booklet. The metrics below are taken from its terms, pricing page and Help Center.
- Person (Canva Pro account). Pro is priced “for one person” and every person must have a unique account.[1][3]
- Seat and Team member. Canva Business teams are billed either by seats (“one paid place on your plan for one team member”) or by the people on the team at the billing date, depending on which billing model the account shows.[6]
- User. The MSA defines a User as “any individual that Customer authorizes to use the Service”; quantities are set in the Order Form.[4]
- Pro Content License (One Design Use License). A licence to use one piece of Pro Content in a single Canva Design.[2]
- AI allowance. A monthly pool shared across Standard, Premium and Ultra AI tools, sized by plan.[3]
- Affinity Device. The Affinity Terms allow an individual to install Affinity on each Device they own or control.[15]
Counting / floors
Accounts are personal. The Terms of Use require that “Each person must have a unique account” and forbid letting any other party use the credentials, and the MSA has the same rule for enterprise Users.[1][4] Catalog proof: One unique account per person; MSA unique login credentials per User. Shared logins are therefore outside the licence on every plan.
Accounts created with a work email address are a common source of unmanaged spend. When someone signs up with an email address associated with their employer, the account becomes an Administered Account and “your use of the Service will bind your employer or the organization to these Terms”.[1] At the employer’s request, Canva may give control of such accounts to the employer’s admin, after making reasonable efforts to give the user advance notice.[1] Catalog proof: Sign-up with a work email binds the employer; Admin Entity may take control of Administered Accounts.
Team plans grow as people are added. Under the “Pay as You Grow” model in the Terms of Use, seats added to a Team are billed on the next Billing Date, which for annual subscriptions falls every three months after the start date, and there is no refund for removing seats already paid for.[1] The Help Center adds that seats are billed even if the invitation has not been accepted, and that removing a team member does not remove the seat.[6] Catalog proof: Pay as You Grow.
Published thresholds apply to some benefits rather than to the plans themselves. Enterprise customers with 150 or more contracted seats receive creative services, a dedicated customer success manager and IT setup, and Enterprise customers with 100 or more paid users receive AI output indemnification under Canva Shield.[8] The current documents state no minimum seat count for Canva Business.[3][6]
Content licensing
The Content License Agreement governs every exported design that contains Canva library content. It sorts content into four categories, from most to least restrictive: Education Content, Branded Content, Pro Content and Free Content. When a design mixes categories, “the most restrictive category applies to the entire design”.[2] Free Content may be reused across designs and downloaded on a standalone basis. Each Pro Content licence covers one design, so reusing the same item in a new or Magic Resized design needs a new licence.[2] Catalog proof: Most restrictive content category governs the whole design; Reuse of Pro Content in a new or resized design needs a new licence. The licence is covered in Canva Content License Agreement.
Virtualization & partitioning
Canva is a hosted service, so server virtualization and partitioning rules do not apply. Desktop and mobile apps run under the same account-based licence.[1] The Affinity desktop software is licensed per account and device: a private individual may install it on each Device they personally own or control. Where an agreement allows multiple Users, Affinity may be used by one individual on each Device they use, or by several individuals on a single shared Device.[15]
Cloud / BYOL
Bring-your-own-licence does not arise. Canva hosts the Service, and the Affinity Terms tie the right to use Affinity to the Canva account, with access that “may require online verification through an entitlement check”.[15] Catalog proof: Affinity licence linked to the Canva account.
Programs
- Pay as You Grow. Seat additions are billed at the next Billing Date, monthly or quarterly.[1]
- Canva Education. Free for eligible K-12 teachers, students and institutions, for non-commercial educational use only. Higher education is excluded and credentials are re-verified every three years.[9][10]
- Canva Nonprofits. Pro features plus team tools for one team of up to 50 users, with additional seats at 50% off Canva Enterprise.[11]
- Canva Campus. “Canva Campus is Canva Enterprise, plus free premium access for enrolled students”, subject to a minimum number of staff or faculty licences.[12]
- MSA 12-month auto-renewal and Reseller User Commitment true-up. Direct enterprise contracts renew for 12 months unless either party gives 30 days’ notice. Reseller contracts are trued up each quarter against the User Commitment.[4][5]
- AI Pass and AI top-ups. Add-ons that increase the monthly AI allowance; AI Pass is USD 100 per person per month.[13]
- Free trials and pilots. Pro and Business trials are available once per account and once per payment method, and convert to paid plans unless cancelled.[1][17]
- Canva Enterprise IP indemnity and Canva Shield. IP indemnities for Enterprise customers, with the AI output and content indemnities reserved for customers with 100 or more paid users.[8]
Agreements
Self-serve plans are governed by the Terms of Use, which incorporate the Content License Agreement, the Acceptable Use Policy, the AI Product Terms and, where Canva processes personal data on a team’s behalf, the Data Processing Addendum.[1] Direct enterprise customers sign Order Forms under the Master Services Agreement, which Canva states it “is unable to accept markups or edits to”; where the MSA and an Order Form conflict, the Order Form controls.[4] Customers who buy through an authorised reseller are covered by the Indirect Master Services Agreement, and the reseller’s order form sets price and quantities.[1][5] The AI Product Terms describe AI usage limits as “operational controls and not fixed entitlements”.[14] These documents are covered in Canva Terms of Use, Master Services Agreement and Affinity Terms.
Audits and compliance
Canva’s subscription agreements have no general licence audit clause of the kind found in on-premises software contracts. Compliance is enforced through the service. Under the Content License Agreement, Canva “will keep track of your designs and your account”, including downloads and Exports, and may suspend or terminate an account that breaches the licence.[2] Catalog proof: Canva monitors Exports for licence compliance. The Affinity Terms are the exception. Where an agreement lets multiple Users access Affinity, the customer must keep “an accurate and up to date record of all Users and copies”, and Canva may audit on site with reasonable notice.[15] Catalog proof: Affinity multi-user records and on-site audit.
