Alation licensing is the set of terms under which Alation, Inc. sells its data intelligence platform, built around the Alation Data Catalog, to enterprises. The vendor describes the catalog as a way for teams to find, understand and trust data assets.[1] The platform is sold either as Alation Cloud Service, a software-as-a-service offering that Alation hosts, or as customer-managed Alation Software that the customer installs on its own infrastructure.[2][3][4] Alation documents a broad set of connectors to data sources, business intelligence systems and file systems, and states that it offers more than 120.[5]
Licensing has three layers. The first is the contract: an online Master Cloud Software License and Services Agreement (MSA) plus addenda, incorporated by an Order or Statement of Work.[2][6] The second is the user entitlement: each person who uses the catalog consumes a seat at one of three licence levels, Creator, Explorer or Viewer, determined by the role the person holds.[7] The third is a consumption layer for AI-powered products, in which a customer buys a pool of Alation Consumption Units (ACUs) that metered actions draw down.[8] Catalog proof: Named User; Alation Consumption Unit.
Editions
Alation does not publish a price list or edition table in the documents reviewed for this article. The Data Products documentation tells customers to contact the Account Manager for pricing, and the MSA refers to “then current list prices” without publishing them.[9][2] What the documents do show is the structure below.
| Offering | How it is counted | Deeper article |
|---|---|---|
| Alation Cloud Service (catalog) | Named Users at Creator, Explorer or Viewer level, plus an optional limit on data objects | Roles and licence types |
| Customer-managed Alation Software | Named Users for which Alation issues licence keys; one production, backup, test and development instance | Contract documents |
| Curation Automation, Data Quality, Data Product Marketplace, Agent Studio, Critical Data Manager, AI Governance | Alation Consumption Units from a shared pool, with product-specific rates | Consumption units |
| Alation Agent and add-ons, connectors, CData drivers | Optional software; connector families depend on deployment | Agent and connectors |
| Support | Standard Support with the Subscription Term; Mission Critical Support and USA support as separate purchases | Contract documents |
The feature comparison page also refers to plans named Deluxe, Enterprise and Enterprise+: AWS PrivateLink connectivity and Bring Your Own Encryption Key are listed for the Enterprise and Enterprise+ plans only, and connector authentication through an external vault for the Deluxe, Enterprise and Enterprise+ plans only.[4] The documents reviewed do not define those plans further. Catalog proof: Some Cloud Service features are limited to higher plans.
Metrics
The MSA defines a Named User as a specific employee or contractor of the customer, authorised by the customer to use Alation Cloud and identified by a unique email address.[2] The number of Named Users and their user level are specified in the Order.[2] The product documentation maps those levels to three licence types: Creator for the Server Admin, Catalog Admin, Data Source Admin, Steward and Composer roles; Explorer for the Explorer role on Alation Cloud Service; and Viewer for read-only consumers.[7] Catalog proof: Creator licence; Explorer licence; Viewer licence.
The Licenses page of the Cloud Service Admin Settings shows further counted entitlements: data objects under a Standard licence (with a purchased limit or Unlimited), Data Quality objects, Data Products and monthly Data Products chat messages, a purchased count of suggested descriptions, and Curation Automation packs and AI actions.[10] Catalog proof: Data object (Standard licence); Data Quality object.
For consumption-priced products, the metric is the ACU. Alation states that, instead of buying seats, per-table subscriptions or separate product tiers, a customer buys a pool of ACUs, and that only actions delivering AI-generated value are metered, while browsing, searching, reading and manual edits are free.[8]
Counting and floors
Three counting points matter in an audit. First, each Named User identification is unique and cannot be shared or used by more than one individual, and a Named User subscription can be reassigned to a replacement user.[2] Second, a licence seat is consumed when a role is assigned; changing a role releases the old seat and consumes the new one, and suspending a user frees the seat.[11] Third, the licence may include grace seats beyond the purchased number, so a counter showing “0 left” does not mean the hard limit is reached.[10] Catalog proof: The licence may include grace seats.
The documents reviewed publish no minimum quantity. Floors appear only as ACU pack sizes (Starter 60,000, Growth 120,000, Scale 240,000 and Enterprise 480,000 ACUs) and as the 6,000 free ACUs and 100,000 free Curation Automation AI actions granted to eligible tenants.[8][12]
Virtualization and partitioning
The MSA and the On-Premises Software Addendum do not mention virtualization, partitioning, CPU or core counting. For customer-managed software, Use is defined by instances and users: the customer may install and run one each of production, backup, test and development instances of Alation Software, up to the number of Named Users for which Alation provides licence keys.[3] Catalog proof: Customer-managed Use covers four instances up to the licensed Named Users.
Cloud and BYOL
The MSA licenses Alation Cloud, which Alation hosts; the customer has no right to take possession of the software or to host it.[2] The licence includes optional installation of the Alation Agent, software on the customer network that connects Alation Cloud Service to on-premises data sources.[2][13] Customer-managed Alation is licensed separately under the On-Premises Software Addendum, which changes the Use definition, deletes the service-level and security exhibits, and adds a quarterly Named User audit right.[3] The documents describe no bring-your-own-licence model for moving a customer-managed licence to Alation Cloud.
Programs
Several commercial programs sit on top of the base licence. Cloud customers that have bought none of the in-scope AI products receive 6,000 free ACUs at account level, and existing AI product entitlements convert to an ACU pack at a revenue-equivalent rate at renewal.[8] Curation Automation tenants on the earlier AI actions model receive 100,000 free actions.[12] Trials and Beta Versions are for evaluation only and sit outside the service level agreement.[2] Mission Critical Support and USA regional support are separate purchases.[14] The ALLIE AI Suggested Descriptions feature uses generative AI to draft table descriptions on Alation Cloud Service.[15] Catalog proof: Free ACU pool; Mission Critical Support.
Compliance and audit
The cloud MSA allows Alation to review the customer’s use periodically against the usage limits in the Order, and excess use is payable at the then-current list prices. It states no notice period, scope or procedure.[2] The customer-managed addendum replaces that sentence with a right to audit the number of Named Users and customer usage quarterly, with reasonable assistance and as little disruption as possible.[3] The federal addendum goes further: on written request the end user certifies compliance in a signed writing, and with at least ten days notice Alation may audit Named Users, connectors, apps and objects.[16] The customer-managed licence file is validated by Alation and replaced from the Customer Portal.[17][18] Breach of the licence grant or restrictions is excluded from the MSA liability cap.[2] Catalog proof: Alation may audit Named Users quarterly on customer-managed software; Federal end users may be audited on ten days notice.
Out of scope
This article does not cover Alation’s Online Data Privacy Addendum, security certifications or Website Terms, which are listed on the legal page but are not licence-metric documents.[6] It does not cover resellers, marketplace listings, professional services Statements of Work or negotiated Order terms. It also does not cover third-party products that customers connect to Alation, such as the CData drivers discussed in the connectors article, beyond how Alation distributes their licences.[19] No court case about Alation’s software licensing was identified from primary court records, so there are no case articles for this vendor.
