Acronis Snap Deploy, DeviceLock and other products licensing

This article covers the licensing of Acronis products other than Acronis Cyber Protect and Cyber Protect Cloud, as set out in the Acronis Licensing Policy.

On This Page

Acronis publishes one Licensing Policy for all its products, and besides Acronis Cyber Protect it covers a set of smaller product lines, each with its own unit: deployment tools, data loss prevention, Hyper-V management and security, storage infrastructure, remote desktop, file sharing and consumer backup.[1] All Acronis software is licensed by Acronis International GmbH under the Acronis Software License Agreement, which incorporates the Licensing Policy.[1][2] Several of these products define “Machine” or “Host” differently from the Cyber Protect “Device”, so a licence manager should read each definition separately. For the general framework see Acronis licensing.

Metrics

Term Catalog row Definition (Licensing Policy)
Machine (Snap Deploy, True Image) Machine A computing device composed of a unique combination of motherboard, one or more network interface cards and one or more CPUs, operating as a single hardware unit[1]
Machine (DeviceLock DLP) Machine A single supported operating system instance on a physical or virtual machine (other than a session host server), or a single supported application, desktop or VDI session on a session host server[1]
Host (Cloud Manager, Cloud Security) Host A single instance of a hypervisor with up to 2 CPUs or 16 CPU cores[1]
End User (Cyber Protect Connect) End User Connect is licensed per End User, on subscription only[1]
Storage (Cyber Infrastructure) Storage capacity (TB) Licence-key capacity, or monthly usage per TB for pay-as-you-go[1]

The Snap Deploy Machine is tied to hardware: a motherboard, network cards and CPUs. On a plain reading, replacing the motherboard creates a different Machine, which matters because Snap Deploy licences do not move freely (see below). DeviceLock’s Machine, by contrast, counts operating system instances and, on session hosts, each application, desktop or VDI session.[1]

Counting / floors

Snap Deploy. A Machine License allows an unlimited number of Deployments of one or more Images to a single Machine and is bound to the first License Holder and the first Machine imaged. A Deployment License allows a single Deployment of one Image on one Machine; if the Deployment fails the same licence can be reused, but the Image cannot be changed or re-installed. Both types are further split into Server and Workstation licences.[1] Since 1 August 2023 Acronis offers only subscription-based Snap Deploy Machine licences.[1] Catalog: Snap Deploy Machine licences move only after approved decommissioning; Snap Deploy Machine License.

DeviceLock DLP. The minimum order is five licences, except for maintenance renewals of perpetual licences. Licences are for Microsoft Windows unless the name says otherwise.[1] Catalog: DeviceLock DLP has a five-licence minimum and is subscription only. DeviceLock Core is the base Component and can be used alone; the other DeviceLock Endpoint DLP Components were add-ons discontinued effective 1 April 2023. The Enterprise Server DB Access Add-On gives one year of direct access to log entries collected from one Machine.[1]

Cyber Protect Connect. The Free edition allows 15-minute remote desktop sessions, with support only through the Acronis forum. Personal is a one-year subscription for non-commercial use. Professional is a one- or three-year subscription for commercial use with multi-tenancy. Both paid editions automatically downgrade to Free when the subscription expires.[1] Catalog: Cyber Protect Connect paid editions revert to Free on expiry; Connect Professional.

Cyber Files. Cyber Files may be installed on an unlimited number of physical host servers within the licensee’s Enterprise and on up to three named mobile devices and unlimited Mac and Windows PCs per End User. The number of End Users is set in the Contract Documents, and up to 5% of them may be visitors and third parties.[1] Files Connect Single Server installs on one physical Windows host server and Multiserver on an unlimited number, each with a specified number of Mac client Supported Devices and up to three mobile devices per End User.[1]

Cyber Infrastructure. The Trial License is limited to 1 TB of storage but can be used in production. A Subscription License is activated with a time-limited key that grants a set capacity, and more capacity means a new key. Pay-as-you-go customers are charged monthly per TB for universal storage usage plus a monthly subscription for protected workloads, based on the capacity shown in the Cyber Protect Cloud console.[1] See subscription and consumption licensing.

True Image. Essential, Advanced and Premium subscriptions allow installation on the number of Windows or Mac Machines in the licence subtype (one, three or five) and on any number of mobile devices. Advanced includes 50 GB, 250 GB or 500 GB of Acronis Cloud storage and Premium 1 TB to 10 TB, shared among the Machines registered to the licence.[1]

Virtualization & partitioning

Cloud Manager and Cloud Security offer two options. A Host License covers an unlimited number of VMs on one supported hypervisor host, such as Microsoft Hyper-V, and can be moved by the License Holder to another host. A Virtual Machine License covers one VM and cannot be moved to another VM. Neither can be transferred to a different License Holder.[1] Because a Host is capped at 2 CPUs or 16 CPU cores, a larger hypervisor host does not fit the definition, and a licence manager should confirm the position with Acronis before relying on a single Host License for it.[1] Catalog: Cloud Manager and Cloud Security Host licences cap at 2 CPUs or 16 cores.

DeviceLock counts virtual machines as Machines, and on Remote Desktop or other session hosts it counts each application, desktop or VDI session.[1] See virtualization and partitioning.

Cloud / BYOL

These products have no cloud licence-mobility rules. Cyber Infrastructure pay-as-you-go customers may connect the locally deployed Backup service to Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud without charge, but must use licence keys to connect it to Acronis Cyber Protect on premises.[1]

Programs

Transfers after decommissioning. A Snap Deploy Machine License, and a legacy True Image Standard (perpetual) licence, may move to another Machine only after the License Holder sends Acronis Customer Service a screenshot of the used licence, the MAC address of the decommissioned Machine and IT documentation confirming decommissioning, and Acronis approves in writing. A Deployment License is never transferable.[1]

Perpetual licences. Since 1 July 2021 DeviceLock DLP is sold only on subscription. Holders of perpetual DeviceLock DLP licences may keep renewing maintenance only if it never lapsed on or after that date; any lapse ends the right to renew.[1] The True Image perpetual licence is offered only to customers who held a perpetual licence dated 2015 to 2019 or 2021, with free upgrades within one major version.[1]

Support. For personal products, Acronis offers standard support around the clock, by email and chat for perpetual products and also by phone for subscriptions.[3]
