Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud is Acronis’s multi-tenant platform for service providers who deliver backup, disaster recovery, security and management services to their own customers. It consists of the Cyber Protect Management Server, Cyber Protect Services, Cloud Storage and an agent on each endpoint, and can be Acronis Hosted, Hybrid (Acronis hosts the management server and services but not the storage) or Service Provider Hosted.[1] Acronis provides it on a pay-as-you-go basis, with pricing set in the purchase order and monthly billing.[1] A subscription licence is granted, not a perpetual licence.[1] Catalog: Service providers choose per-GB or per-workload; subscription only. The EULA, by contrast, forbids using Acronis software to perform services for third parties on a service bureau basis without written authorization, which is why service providers use this platform rather than end-user licences.[5] For end-user licences see Acronis Cyber Protect licensing.
Editions
Acronis offers three licensing models, chosen per customer tenant.[2]
| Model | Catalog row | How billing works |
|---|---|---|
| Solution-based (per workload) | Solution-based licensing | One SKU per workload bundling services, such as Backup + DR or Ultimate Protection, with storage included and pooled per customer; storage beyond the pool billed separately[2][3] |
| Service-based per workload | Per Workload model | Fixed monthly price per protected workload plus Acronis Hosted storage; no charge for local or service-provider storage[1][2] |
| Service-based per GB | Per GB model | Billing on protected storage across Acronis Hosted, service-provider and local storage, with no limit on the number of workloads[1][2] |
The two service-based modes have identical features and differ only in the billing unit.[3] The pricing page describes per-workload billing as usually suited to customers with fewer devices but more data on each, and per-GB billing to customers with many workloads holding little data.[2] Security, RMM and similar services are licensed separately, typically per workload as their own services.[2]
Metrics
| Unit | Catalog row | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Workload | An individual Workstation, Virtual Machine, Server, Hosting Server, Website, Mobile Device, Microsoft 365 seat or Google Workspace seat[1] |
| GB | Protected storage (GB) | Storage used by all protected workloads in Acronis Hosted, service-provider-hosted and local storage[1] |
| Microsoft 365 seat | Microsoft 365 seat | An active Microsoft 365 user with a protected mailbox or OneDrive, or with access to a protected SharePoint site or Team[4] |
| Google Workspace seat | Google Workspace seat | A user whose mailbox or Google Drive has at least one backup plan applied[4] |
| Mailbox | Mailbox | A business mailbox protected with the Advanced Email Security pack[1] |
| Compute point | Compute point | Unit consumed while a failover server runs in Acronis Cloud[1] |
The Licensing Policy defines a Server as a workload that provides data to other computers, a Workstation as a personal computer or desktop terminal, and a Hosting Server as a server or VM with cPanel or Plesk installed.[1]
Counting / floors
When a workload counts. A machine, device or website is protected, and therefore counted, as long as at least one protection plan is applied to it; a mobile device counts after its first backup.[4] Catalog: A workload counts as protected while a protection plan is applied. Quotas cap usage: once the overage allowed on a device quota is exceeded, plans cannot be applied to more devices.[4]
The licensing engine. The engine acquires offering items automatically, depending on enabled services, quotas and the features requested in protection plans. Standard protection features are accounted but not billed. An additional service starts billing only when its features are used in a protection plan, and stops when they are no longer used. Licences for additional services cannot be changed manually.[3] Catalog: Additional services bill only while used in a protection plan. In practice the protection plans are the licence position, so a plan template that switches on an advanced feature for every workload switches on its billing too.
Microsoft 365. In per-gigabyte mode only storage is billed and seats are not counted. In per-workload mode protected seats are billed and storage is billed only for unprotected seats. Only active users count; external users and blocked users who only reach shared resources are not charged.[4] Catalog: Microsoft 365 seats are billed per protected seat in per-workload mode. The local agent and the cloud agent consume separate quotas, so backing up the mailboxes of 120 users with the local agent and their OneDrive with the cloud agent is charged as 240 seats.[4] Catalog: Backing up the same Microsoft 365 users with two agents is charged twice.
Storage. In per-workload mode the backup storage quota applies only to workloads other than Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, whose backup storage is unlimited under the fair usage policy; in per-GB mode the quota covers all backups.[4] Storage is displayed in binary units (MiB, GiB, TiB) even though the console labels them MB, GB and TB.[4] In solution-based licensing, included storage is allocated per workload and pooled at customer level, for example 3 TB per server, 2 TB per VM and 300 GB per workstation; Microsoft 365 storage is unlimited, DR storage is included, and orphaned backup data is billed as standard storage.[2] Catalog: Solution-based included storage is pooled per customer tenant.
Commitment. Acronis uses a minimum monthly commitment chosen as a tier. Higher tiers bring volume discounts, and a partner whose usage grows can move to a higher tier the following month. One commitment covers all of a partner’s customers and models, and commitment terms may differ for partners buying through a distributor.[2] Catalog: Partners commit to a monthly minimum tier. See consumption credits and prepaid capacity.
Virtualization & partitioning
Each Virtual Machine is a workload in its own right.[1] The Server and Web hosting server offering items allow one physical machine or an unlimited number of virtual machines to be protected in a single protection plan, while the Virtual Machine offering item protects supported VMs with advanced application recovery.[1] Virtual machines on a Cyber Frame cluster are licensed separately, with all protection features included and billing based on infrastructure resources instead of per workload or per gigabyte.[3] See virtualization and partitioning.
Cloud / BYOL
The offering items cover machines on the end user’s premises or in anyone’s cloud.[1] Local backup capacity counts backups to local disks, network shares and public clouds such as S3-compatible storage, Azure and AWS; no hard quota or overage can be set for it.[4] Per-workload licensing charges nothing for local or service-provider storage and less for supported native cloud storage options.[2]
Programs
Advanced packs. Advanced Security, Advanced Backup and Advanced Management are each licensed per Server, Virtual Machine, Workstation and Hosting Server protected with the pack. Advanced Email Security is licensed per mailbox, for business mailboxes only. Advanced Data Loss Prevention covers one Workstation, VM or Server per licence and needs a Cyber Protect Cloud licence for the same workload. Advanced File Sync & Share charges per eSigned file and per notarized document. All packs require an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud licence.[1] Catalog: Advanced packs are licensed per protected workload.
Advanced Disaster Recovery. Provided on a per-GB basis: the partner is charged for Acronis Hosted cloud storage used on the last day of the month and for the compute points and IP addresses used on that day.[1] Compute points act as currency whenever a server is activated and running in Acronis Cloud.[1]
Fair Use Policy. Where Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace offerings include Acronis Hosted storage with no technical limit, customers may not use an excessive amount, as determined by Acronis. Acronis first gives notice and a chance to reduce usage or license more storage; for repeat violations or substantial abuse it may suspend access, charge overage at then-current rates or terminate the licence, and it may audit usage.[1] Catalog: Excessive hosted Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace storage may be charged.
One mode per tenant. All licensing modes can be enabled for partner tenants, but only one per customer tenant.[3] Catalog: Only one licensing mode per customer tenant. A customer tenant cannot mix solution-based and service-based licensing, but can be switched between models at any time, and MSPs can use different models for different customers.[2] MDR and Security Awareness Training are billed separately on top of any package.[2]
Support
The EULA states that for Acronis Backup Cloud support and maintenance are provided by the reseller from which the customer buys the licence.[5]
