Writer plans, seats and credits

This article is about how Writer's Starter and Enterprise plans, Pro and Lite seats and prepaid credits work for licence and cost tracking. Contract terms are in the Platform Services Agreement article, and per-token model rates are in the Palmyra models article. It is not legal advice.

On This Page

Writer prices access to its WRITER platform with two units at once: people, counted as seats, and AI work, counted in credits. The published documents describe a Starter plan and an Enterprise plan; Enterprise has two seat types, Pro and Lite, and a credit balance that is partly pooled across the organisation and partly allocated to individual Lite users.[1][2] This article explains each construct as Writer’s own documents state it, and which facts a licence manager can check in the admin console. Writer does not publish seat prices, and the help centre pages carry only relative “last updated” labels, so the facts below are dated by the 2026-10-13 retrieval.

Starter and Enterprise plans

The plans page compares two plans.[1]

Feature Starter Enterprise
Users Up to 5 users As many users, teams and free collaborators as needed
Build access Required for all users As many as needed
Playbooks 5 Unlimited
Scheduled routines Up to 3 Unlimited
AI Studio Limited access Full access
Active connectors Up to 3 Unlimited

The same page says that Starter offers monthly or annual per-seat plans with fixed credit limits, and that Enterprise includes regular seats and unlimited free users, plus optional solution packs and services.[1] Starter has a 14-day free trial without a credit card. Writer offers a 20% discount on Starter and Enterprise to non-profits and educational institutions, requested by email from a non-profit or .edu address.[1]

Self-serve billing has its own rules. The plans page states that Writer accepts major credit and debit cards and does not support ACH, offline invoicing or PayPal; that only the billing admin can add or remove users, through Manage Plan; and that refunds are approved case by case with no obligation to refund. If a plan is cancelled before the renewal date, access to paid features continues to the end of the current subscription period, after which the paid features and their associated data are lost.[1] The Terms of Use add that the plan renews automatically at then-current rates until cancelled.[11]

The help centre article on adding users says the feature is “supported on Team and Enterprise plans”, whereas the plans page lists only Starter and Enterprise.[9]

Pro and Lite seats

On Enterprise, the standard paid seat is the Pro seat. The plans FAQ describes Pro seats as giving users full access to create, customise and automate workflows with extended usage capacity, and says Lite seats are available only on Enterprise plans as a way for new or invited users to try the platform.[1] The help centre states that an Enterprise purchase includes both seat types, and compares them as follows: Lite users have limited credits of 30 US dollars per user per month and individual credits; Pro users have standard credits equal to the seat value and pooled credits; Pro users have administrative rights, Lite users do not.[4]

The Lite Seats article states:[3]

  • Lite Seats are included with the subscription at no additional cost.
  • Each Lite user receives 30 US dollars in credits per month. These are individual credits, separate from the organisation’s shared pool, and refresh monthly with no rollover.
  • When a Lite user’s monthly balance is used, the user cannot start new WRITER Agent, custom agent or Playbook sessions until the balance refreshes or an admin upgrades the user to Pro. The user can still open earlier sessions and deliverables, and can request an upgrade from within the product.
  • Lite users cannot be assigned org-scoped roles, cannot access AI Studio, team or org settings, and are limited to the Team Member role.
  • Pro seats cannot be downgraded to Lite, and upgrading a Lite user requires an available Pro seat.

The roles article adds that Lite users can run no more than one concurrent agent session.[8] One inconsistency exists in Writer’s own pages: the Lite and Pro comparison table lists AI Studio access for Lite users as view only, while the Lite Seats article says they cannot access AI Studio.[3][4] The platform features article lists unlimited Lite users as part of the platform purchase, which means the Lite population is not a purchased quantity.[7]

How users become Lite or Pro

Seat type is set when a user is added. An admin invites users manually and selects the seat type, billing group, team and role. Alternatively, the admin can claim the company’s email domain and turn on domain discoverability, choosing Lite as the default seat type, so users who sign up with an address from the claimed domain join as Lite users automatically.[3] With SCIM or identity provider groups, only the Pro seat type can be assigned: a user who matches a group joins as Pro, and a user who matches none joins as Lite.[3] For asset management, this means that the identity provider group mapping decides how many Pro seats are consumed, and an unexpected group match can raise the Pro count.

The contractual unit behind Pro seats is the Authorized User of the Platform Services Agreement, which defines the Subscription as access on a per Authorized User basis and bars account sharing.[12]

Credits

Credits are the consumption model on Enterprise. The help centre describes them as a dollar balance on the organisation’s account that is drawn down by WRITER Agent, pre-built agents, Playbooks, API integrations, AI Studio and other features. An Enterprise purchase includes an initial credit package, and the platform features article says a portion of the platform value is included as that package.[2][7]

Key points from the credits article:[2]

  • Credits pool at the organisation level, can be used by any user, and are available for embedded applications where the end user is not a named WRITER user.
  • Credits that come with the platform purchase and Pro seats expire and reset at the end of every contract term. Credits do not roll over, and renewal brings a new allocation based on the new purchase.
  • Additional credits can be bought at any time through the account executive and expire with the contract term.
  • Credits are specific to the purchasing organisation and cannot be transferred to other organisations.
  • The ability to set consumption limits is described as being developed; the article refers customers to the account executive for current options. If the balance is exhausted, access depends on available credits.
  • Current credit consumption rates are maintained on the Writer pricing page, which is the developer pricing documentation.

The Credit Terms, a legal agreement, apply a second layer. They state that credits are non-refundable, non-transferable, may be used only with the platform and have no cash value; that credits on a monthly plan expire at the end of each month and on an annual plan at the end of the annual period; and that credits expire when access ends. They also provide that a customer may have an automatic reload of credits, charged on a recurring basis until cancelled.[10]

Cost allocation: billing groups and consumption

Two features help allocate cost internally, both marked as supported on Enterprise or on a credit contract model.

Billing groups map users to internal budgets. Each user can be assigned to only one billing group, so the number of licences used by each cost centre can be tracked. Groups are created with a name and a contact who need not have a WRITER account, and assignment is by invitation, bulk edit or CSV import (UTF-8, up to 5 MB, replacing earlier assignments).[5]

Consumption details show near real-time monthly usage in tokens and spend in credits, broken down by organisation, user, team or Playbook, to support cross-charging. The report covers Pro seat and shared credit usage only; Lite seat credit usage appears under the Billing tab. Reporting begins in July 2026, and an account on a credit contract with an unlimited pool is shown with an “unlimited” designation.[6]

Roles that affect seat counts

Writer’s default roles include Org admin, Business admin, IT admin, several AI Studio roles (full access, builder, team admin and view only), Team admin, Team member and Limited team member; custom roles are supported on Enterprise plans and are created by org admins and business admins.[8] Lite users cannot hold org-scoped roles. Users cannot be invited directly as org admins; an existing user is promoted from the user list.[9]

Out of scope

This article does not give per-token model prices, covered in Palmyra models and Writer API pricing, and does not state seat prices, which Writer does not publish. The size of an Enterprise credit package and the Pro seat price are matters for the Order Form.
