Sentry plans, reserved volume and pay-as-you-go

This article is about the commercial structure of Sentry's hosted plans: the Developer, Team, Business and Enterprise tiers, the volume included in each, how reserved volume and the pay-as-you-go budget work, billing cycles, trials and the older transaction-based plans. It is not about self-hosting or contract terms, which have their own articles, and it is not legal advice.

On This Page

Sentry’s plan structure combines a flat plan fee with usage-based pricing. Sentry says it bills based on the amount of data processed, and that each paid plan comes with a pre-set monthly volume included in the price.[1] Additional volume can be reserved in advance at a discount or paid for from a pay-as-you-go budget.[1] This article sets out the four plans, the included volumes, the price per unit, and the rules that decide when a charge is made. The pricing documentation applies to organizations on Sentry’s latest pricing plan, and older organizations are directed to their Subscription page.[1]

Editions

Sentry has one free Developer plan and three paid plans, Team, Business and Enterprise.[1] The pricing page gives the following headline positions.[2]

Plan Price on pricing page Users Notable inclusions
Developer $0 One user 5k errors; 5GB logs; 5GB application metrics; 5M spans; 50 replays; 1GB attachments; 10 custom dashboards; 30-day lookback
Team $26 per month when billed annually with default pre-paid data Unlimited 50k errors; 20 custom dashboards; API and third-party integrations; up to 90-day lookback
Business $80 per month when billed annually with default pre-paid data Unlimited Team features plus unlimited custom dashboards, advanced quota management, SAML and SCIM support
Enterprise Custom Unlimited Business features plus a technical account manager and dedicated customer support; volumes listed as Custom

The comparison on the pricing page also shows that Metric Monitors are 20 on Developer and Team and 1,000 on Business, and that data retention is a 30-day lookback on Developer, up to 90 days on Team and Business, with Business adding additional sampled retention.[2] Prices on the page do not include sales tax, which depends on the billing address.[1]

Plans are changed as follows. Upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades and cancellations are processed at the end of the current contract cycle and cannot be refunded; an organization that no longer wants a paid plan reverts to the Developer plan at the end of its contract.[1] The Terms of Service say the same for downgrades, add that downgrading may cause loss of Service Data, features or capacity, and state that there are no refunds or credits for partial months.[6]

Metrics and included volume

Every paid plan includes the same base monthly volume: 50k errors, 5GB of logs, 5GB of application metrics, 5M spans, 50 replays, one uptime monitor, one cron monitor, 100 size analysis builds and 1GB of attachments. Continuous profiling, UI profiling and Seer are not included and are available only through the pay-as-you-go budget or, for Seer, by purchase.[1]

The categories and their catalog entries are listed below.

Per-unit prices fall as volume rises, and prices differ between Team and Business. Sentry notes that all per-category prices on its page are rounded.[1] Errors, for example, are priced in tiers, and Business prices are higher than Team prices at every tier.[1]

Error volume Team reserved Team pay-as-you-go Business reserved Business pay-as-you-go
Over 50k to 100k $0.0002900 $0.0003625 $0.0008900 $0.0011125
Over 100k to 500k $0.0001750 $0.0002188 $0.0005000 $0.0006250
Over 500k to 10M $0.0001500 $0.0001875 $0.0003000 $0.0003750
Over 10M to 20M $0.0001300 $0.0001625 $0.0002600 $0.0003250
Over 20M $0.0001200 $0.0001500 $0.0002400 $0.0003000

Spans, replays and attachments follow the same pattern of reserved and pay-as-you-go prices by volume tier. Spans are priced from $0.0000016 (Team reserved) for the first tier above 5M, replays from $0.0030000 above 50, and attachments at $0.2500 per GB reserved on both plans above 1GB.[1] Logs and application metrics are $0.50 per GB beyond the 5GB included, available only from the pay-as-you-go budget.[1] In every table the pay-as-you-go price is 25 percent above the reserved price for the same tier in the figures published for errors, spans, replays and attachments.[1]

Reserved volume and the pay-as-you-go budget

Reserved volume is defined as a predetermined amount of data paid for in advance at a discount, on a monthly or annual basis.[1] See Reserved volume. Any unused reserved volume expires at the end of each billing month.[1] Sentry advises customers not to increase reserved volume for a temporary need, because reducing reserved volume is tied to the billing period.[4] Decreases are processed at the end of the billing period and remaining volume cannot be refunded; for annual billing they apply from the start of the next billing year.[4]

The pay-as-you-go (PAYG) budget is a monthly spend ceiling that covers overages above reserved volume. It is shared among all categories on a first-come, first-served basis, and the customer pays only for what is used up to the budget.[1] See Pay-as-you-go budget. Sentry’s own advice is to use PAYG for a temporary rise, such as rolling out a new application version.[4] The replay documentation adds that the monthly maximum can be set on a shared basis or on a per-category basis, where budget is set aside for a single category.[5]

Key behaviours:

  • Data sent after the reserved volume and the PAYG budget are both used up is dropped and not charged, so monitoring is lost for the rest of the billing cycle.[1]
  • Raising the budget mid-cycle takes effect within minutes, and in any case within 24 hours.[1]
  • Lowering the budget below what has already been consumed leaves it at the consumed amount until the next billing date.[1]
  • Upgrading from Team to Business mid-cycle recalculates the existing budget at Business pricing, so the budget may be used up faster.[1] The error-quota documentation likewise says pay-as-you-go pricing changes retroactively on such an upgrade.[4]
  • A Developer-plan organization cannot buy extra volume and must upgrade to Team or Business to prepay or add PAYG.[4]
  • On a paid plan, the first time the errors quota is exceeded the organization is entered into a one-time grace period; the length is not stated.[4]

Billing cycles

Billing is monthly or annual depending on the contract term. Annual subscriptions are billed at the start of the cycle for the plan and reserved volume, with PAYG usage billed monthly. Monthly subscriptions are billed monthly at the start of the cycle for plan and reserved volume, and the bill also includes PAYG usage from the previous cycle.[1] Billing or Owner-level users can change subscription information and access receipts.[1] The Terms of Service add that, unless the order says otherwise, fees are due within 30 days of the invoice date, renewal fees are at Sentry’s then-current rates and fees are non-refundable except as stated.[6]

Trials and free allowances

All new accounts get a 14-day free trial. Organizations that do not upgrade stay on the free Developer plan with limited features.[1] In addition, free, Team or Business accounts can start a one-time, 14-day product trial for each product not already in their plan, such as Tracing or Session Replay. During a product trial events are unlimited, and data used during the trial is not billed.[1] New accounts can request a product trial on day 15, after the Business trial ends, or immediately after upgrading to a paid plan.[1] The pricing page also advertises 5,000 free replays per month for new users during their first three months.[2] Terms of Service section 17 limits any free, trial, alpha, beta or early-access offering to the period Sentry designates, or 30 days if none is designated.[6]

Legacy transaction-based plans

Sentry keeps a separate documentation page for organizations on plans that bill transactions or performance units, headed “before June 11, 2024”.[3] Under it, performance units apply to transactions: a transaction sent by an SDK with only tracing enabled is one unit, and one with both tracing and profiling is 1.3 units.[3] See Performance unit (legacy). That page also states that the Team plan includes a minimum of 100k performance units, and that replays are sold on legacy plans in volumes with minimums such as 10k for prepaid purchase.[3] Some legacy organizations can choose between shared and per-category PAYG, and Seer and logs are available only through a shared budget.[3] The current span quota documentation is still served at a URL that reads “manage-transaction-quota”.[7]

Practical points for asset managers

  • Capture each organization’s plan, billing frequency, reserved volume by category and PAYG budget from Settings > Subscription, where Billing or Owner-level users can make changes.[1]
  • Treat reserved volume as a monthly allowance, not a pool: unused volume is lost each month.[1]
  • Remember the budget is shared by default, so one noisy project or category can consume it for all.[1]
  • A dropped event is not a billing event. A compliance gap in the usual sense does not arise, but there may be a monitoring gap.[1]
  • Check each organization for a trial still running, since trial usage is unlimited and spike protection does not apply to it.[1]

Out of scope

Seer, profiling and monitor pricing are covered in Sentry Seer, profiling, monitors and usage-priced products. How events are counted, and the tools that reduce volume, are in Quota counting, Spike Protection and rate limits. Enterprise price points are not published; the pricing page lists Enterprise as custom.[2]
