MathWorks academic licensing covers the licences MathWorks offers to universities, colleges, community colleges and schools, and to their staff and students. There are two layers. Institution-level licences are sold through MathWorks sales: the Campus-Wide License, Academic Teaching and Community and Technical College licences, and the Primary and Secondary School License.[7] Individual licences are bought on the pricing page with the Academic intended use (teaching and academic research at a degree-granting institute) or the Student intended use (for use with courses offered at a degree-granting institution).[7] All of them exclude commercial use. MathWorks lists acquiring academic or student software for commercial use as end-user piracy.[11]

Metrics
Total Headcount (Campus-Wide License)
A Campus-Wide License gives unlimited use of MATLAB and Simulink products at a university, college or other educational organisation.[1] It covers all users and machines and gives access to more than 100 products. New products are added automatically at general releases. The licence also includes MATLAB Online, MATLAB Copilot, MATLAB Grader and online training.[2] The product page describes unlimited use of desktop and online products by all faculty, staff, students and researchers, on and off campus, on any device.[3] In the License Center, the licences that make up a Campus-Wide License show Total Headcount in the Option column and Academic in the Use column.[2] Catalog: Campus-Wide access follows institutional membership.
Access follows membership of the institution. As faculty, staff and students join or leave, the licence adds or removes their access automatically.[1] Visitors outside the university’s email domain can be added or removed by hand.[1] Administrators can export active-user data from the License Center as spreadsheets or CSV files.[10]
Academic Teaching user
Academic Teaching and Community and Technical College licences give one faculty member and their students access to MATLAB and Simulink products. The administrator keeps the list of users in the License Center. If the licence count is reached, licences are reassigned by removing existing users before adding new ones.[4] These licences include a single suite for desktop use, MATLAB Online and Simulink Online, online training and MATLAB Grader, with annual pricing based on number of users.[5] Catalog: Academic Teaching licences are reassigned within the purchased count.
Counting / floors
Three licence types inside Campus-Wide. The Campus-Wide License is a collection of product licences. Each product is licensed through one of three broad types, chosen by product and environment:[2]
| Type inside Campus-Wide | Used for |
|---|---|
| Individual | MATLAB and Simulink on personal computers, and in labs or classrooms where users sign in with university credentials; Polyspace and RoadRunner products; web services such as MATLAB Online, MATLAB Grader, MATLAB Copilot and the Online Training Suite[2] |
| Designated Computer | Permanently offline computers, classroom and lab computers used for offline tests, and computers shared through generic usernames[2] |
| Concurrent | MATLAB and Simulink in high-performance computing centres; MATLAB Parallel Server; MATLAB Production Server; MATLAB Web App Server[2] |
Catalog: Campus-Wide License delivers products through three licence types.
Because the licence is sized by institution, there is no per-seat shortfall to calculate for eligible members. The compliance questions are about eligibility instead: whether users and uses are academic, and whether Campus-Wide licence files are used only by the institution. Licence files installed at a spin-off company or commercial partner would be outside the Academic use.
Deployment and transition. When a university first gets a Campus-Wide License, MathWorks describes four one-time steps. The administrator configures authentication so that users sign in with university single sign-on credentials, or with a MathWorks Account linked to their university email. Existing installations configured for earlier licences are moved to the Campus-Wide License, and older Campus-Wide configurations are updated. Users receive instructions for installing MATLAB on personal computers and using online services. Finally, products are installed on university-managed computers in classrooms, labs, HPC centres and cloud or container environments.[2] Products that come through the Concurrent licence need a license server.[2] For a licence manager, the transition step matters most. Installations still pointing at older departmental licences should be found and moved, or the older licences retired, so that the institution does not pay twice.
Borrowing. Campus-Wide licences, including their Concurrent licences, cannot use license borrowing.[9] Catalog: License borrowing: commercial network licences, up to 30 days.
Student licences. Student licences are for students and teachers in educational settings and must not be used for commercial, professional or revenue-generating activities.[8] MathWorks refers to the SLA and the Program Offering Guide for the full Student and Home policies.[8] Catalog: Student licences are limited to coursework and education.
Floors. No minimum headcount or user count is published.
Virtualization & partitioning
Designated Computer licences within Campus-Wide are intended for offline or shared lab computers. The standard Designated Computer rule that users must be physically present applies. Workloads on HPC clusters use the Concurrent licence and MATLAB Parallel Server.[2] MathWorks states that Campus-Wide access can cover MATLAB Parallel Server needs at institutions that have it.[14]
Cloud / BYOL
Campus-Wide licences are already configured for cloud use. They are among the licence types that may run MATLAB on public clouds, in containers, in Cloud Center and in Jupyter environments.[12] Full MATLAB Online access is available to Campus-Wide, Academic Teaching, Primary and Secondary School, Academic Individual and Student licences that are current on Software Maintenance Service.[13] Users must link their MathWorks Account, using the organisation’s email address, to the licence.[13]
Programs
- Campus-Wide License: institution-wide; more than 2,400 schools have Campus-Wide access according to MathWorks.[3]
- Academic Teaching License: per faculty member and class; annual.[5]
- Primary and Secondary School License: MATLAB, Simulink and 120+ products for schools, on personal and school-owned computers.[6]
Out of scope
This page does not cover Academic licences bought by individual researchers outside these programs beyond their intended-use restriction, MathWorks training and courseware, or student competition programmes.
