LastPass personal, Families and Families as a Benefit licensing

This article is about the LastPass personal plans (Free, Premium, Families and Plus) and the Families as a Benefit entitlement that organisations can give to Business and Business Max users. Business plans have their own article. It is not legal advice.

On This Page

LastPass personal plans are the individual and household editions of LastPass: Free, Premium, Families and Plus. They are used under the Terms of Service for Personal Use, which grant use “for your own personal and individual use” and state that individual user accounts may not be shared amongst multiple individuals.[1] A separate entitlement, Families as a Benefit, lets an employer provide a Families account to staff, which makes the personal plans relevant to business licence management as well.

Editions

The pricing page, loaded in a browser on 2026-10-08 and served in euros, listed these personal plans.[2]

Plan Price shown (billed annually) Users Notable inclusions
Free None 1 Limited to 1 device type; unlimited password storage, autofill, dark web monitoring and basic sharing
Premium EUR 2.90 per month 1 Access on all devices; 30-day trial
Families EUR 3.90 per month 6 Everything in Premium; 6 Premium accounts; Families manager dashboard; VPN on Windows
Plus EUR 6.50 per month 1 Everything in Premium plus LastPass VPN for up to 10 devices (Windows only)

Free is described as including a 30-day trial of Premium.[2] The Families card states “6 Premium accounts for yourself and your parents, kids, roommates, friends, and whoever else you call family”, and each Families member has an independent encrypted vault that no one, including a family admin, can access.[2]

Metrics

Account and user limit

Premium and Plus each cover one user; Families covers six. The comparison table lists the user limit as “1 User”, “6 Users” and “1 User” for Premium, Families and Plus respectively.[2] See Premium account, Families account and Plus account.

Device type (Free)

As of March 16, 2021, LastPass Free “only includes access on unlimited devices of one type”, that is computers or mobile devices, while multifactor authentication works on both types.[3] The pricing FAQ states the practical result: with Free, LastPass can be used on either desktop or mobile devices but not both, and only one password can be shared with one person at a time. Premium adds access across all devices, sharing with multiple users, emergency access, personal support from the customer care team, hardware multifactor options such as YubiKey and more passwordless vault login options.[2] See Free plan device type.

Families roles

A Families subscription has an owner, managers and members. Every member, whatever the role, has their own vault; the owner and managers can access the Families Manager Dashboard, add and remove members and assign manager rights, and only the owner can cancel the subscription. The owner is assigned manager automatically on purchase or on starting a trial, and cannot remove themselves without transferring ownership first.[4] The pricing comparison describes the dashboard as managing up to six family members.[2]

Responsibility for members

Under the Personal Terms, a person using the family plan may create and assign accounts for other members. By creating accounts the user confirms the legal right to do so, consents to LastPass processing personal data of all family plan members, including minors, and agrees to be responsible for those members’ activities and their compliance with the Terms.[1]

Additional fees for extra users

LastPass “may periodically review your account and charge you additional fees if the number of users accessing your account exceeds your purchased quantity”. This applies to personal plans as it does to business plans.[1] In practice a Families plan has a stated limit of six accounts, so use above that number would fall outside the plan.

Renewal of all licences

LastPass always renews all licences included in Families, with no option to reduce the number of member slots at renewal.[6]

Virtualization and partitioning

Not applicable.

Cloud and BYOL

Not applicable. LastPass VPN, part of Plus and shown as Windows only on the pricing page, runs in a separate app using the existing LastPass account.[2]

Families as a Benefit

An organisation that has LastPass Business or Business Max can provide its users with “a complimentary LastPass Families account, which is a personal account that includes 5 additional licenses” that the user can grant to family, friends or anyone else.[5] The Business card on the pricing page describes the same arrangement: each employee gets a personal account plus 5 licences to share.[2] A user can link a personal Families (or other personal) account to the Business account to keep vault entries in one place while the accounts remain separate, and can unlink at any time.[5] For licence managers the consequence is that the 5 additional licences are not counted in the business user quantity in the documents reviewed, while the personal accounts themselves are governed by the Personal Terms. See Families as a Benefit and Families as a Benefit licence.

Trials

Trials run for 30 days on personal plans; after a trial the user may buy an annual subscription, and a user who continues on Free keeps saved data in the vault but loses access to paid features.[2] See Free trial and LastPass Free.

Subscription and renewal

Personal services are billed in advance on a recurring billing cycle, typically yearly. They renew by default for a period equal to the expiring term unless either party cancels at least 30 days before expiry; a customer can cancel renewal from My Account in the vault or by notice to support (for Premium and Families accounts only). Cancelling one service does not affect another.[1] Price changes take effect at the next renewal, and continued use after notice is treated as agreement.[1] All payments are final and non-refundable, and the Help Center adds that cancelling a prepaid subscription means it expires at the end of the billing period without refund while features remain available until then.[1] [7]

If a paid subscription is terminated or expires, the account may be converted to a free or basic version at LastPass’s discretion; otherwise access ends.[1]

Out of scope

This article does not cover the mobile app-store billing routes, regional pricing or tax treatment, LastPass VPN technical terms, or the Authenticator app. Employer-managed accounts and corporate subscriptions are covered in LastPass Teams, Business and Business Max licensing.
