Kong Insomnia licensing

This article is about how Insomnia, Kong's API design, debugging and testing client, is licensed: the Apache 2.0 desktop application, the Essentials, Pro and Enterprise plans priced per user, mock server allowances, account and seat rules, and the Insomnia Terms of Service. It does not cover Konnect or Kong Gateway.

On This Page

Insomnia is Kong’s API client for designing, debugging and testing APIs. Kong’s documentation describes it as an open source desktop application for macOS, Windows and Linux, and its GitHub README calls it an “open-source, cross-platform API client” for GraphQL, REST, WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, gRPC and other HTTP-compatible protocols.[6] Licensing has two layers. The software is open source, and Kong sells cloud services and enterprise features as per-user subscriptions. The Product-Specific Terms call Kong Insomnia “a hybrid SaaS and on-prem API development and testing platform”: the desktop application is local, and the SaaS portion provides central administration and optional storage of API specifications or projects, which the terms call Project Data.[4]

Editions

Insomnia’s pricing page offers three plans per user per month: Essentials, Pro and Enterprise.[1]

Plan Price shown Included allowances and features
Insomnia Essentials $0 per user per month Unlimited Git Sync projects for up to 3 users; unlimited cloud and local projects for all users; Inso CLI; unlimited collection runs; 1,000 mock server requests per month; end-to-end encryption; custom linting rules[1]
Insomnia Pro $12 per user per month Everything in Essentials, plus unlimited users, Git Sync for all users, unlimited organizations, role-based access control and 10,000 mock server requests per month[1]
Insomnia Enterprise $45 per user per month Everything in Pro, plus native Kong Konnect integration, SSO (SAML/OIDC) and SCIM, mandated storage locations, domain capture and invite control, enterprise support, native vault integrations and unlimited mock server requests[1]

The page offers a Monthly and an Annual (Save 17%) view, and the extracted text does not say which view the prices belong to, so a buyer should confirm the billing period on the checkout page.[1] The Enterprise price carries the note “Self-serve up to 50 users. For larger teams, contact sales.”[1] The Enterprise documentation describes the plan as providing “advanced options for user management and security”, including end-to-end encryption configuration, storage control and access governance, together with SSO, SCIM, vault integrations, teams, co-owners, domains, reports on active and inactive users and a Konnect Gateway Service integration.[7] Catalog proof: Insomnia plans are priced per user per month with Git Sync free for up to 3 users on Essentials; Insomnia Enterprise is self-serve up to 50 users.

Metrics

Seat. Insomnia sells per user. The team owner changes the subscription under Account, Change Subscription at app.insomnia.rest, and the updated seat count is reflected in the next billing cycle.[2] The Insomnia seat (user per month) row records this unit. Catalog proof: Insomnia seat increases take effect in the next billing cycle.

Mock server request. Mock server usage is metered monthly. Essentials has 1,000 requests and Pro has 10,000, with an add-on of “$10/25,000 reqs” after the free allowance; Enterprise is unlimited.[1] Catalog proof: Insomnia mock server requests above the allowance cost $10 per 25,000; Insomnia mock server request.

Counting / floors

Accounts and sharing. The Terms of Service require an account for the Services, including those offered on a free or trial basis, and forbid accounts “registered by automated methods”. Authorized users “may not share accounts and passwords among authorized users or with any unauthorized person”, and the customer is responsible for all activity under its account.[3] In practice each seat is one person’s account. Catalog proof: Insomnia accounts and passwords may not be shared between users.

Free use. The terms say “you do not need to create an account to download or use any software that we provide under an open source license”.[3] The pricing page also points to a free local-only Scratch Pad that needs no login.[1] The README explains that an account is required for most capabilities, but that data can still be stored 100% locally (Local Vault), in the customer’s own Git repository (Git Sync) or in the cloud (Cloud Sync, optionally with end-to-end encryption).[6]

Fees. “All fees are payable in advance and are non-refundable. Subscription changes are prorated.” Fees exclude taxes.[3] Kong “reserves the right to change the prices of the Services or Software at any time”, and may modify or discontinue the Services or Software with or without notice.[3] Catalog proof: Insomnia fees are payable in advance, non-refundable, and subscription changes are prorated; Kong may change Insomnia prices at any time. A billing FAQ adds that after a card update, payment is taken automatically on the next scheduled billing day.[2]

Virtualization & partitioning

Insomnia is a desktop application installed per user on 64-bit macOS, Windows and Linux; the FAQ says it does not provide 32-bit binaries.[2] Licensing is by the user account, not by device, processor or virtual machine, and the documents retrieved contain no virtualization or partitioning rule of the kind described in virtualization and partitioning.

Cloud / BYOL

Open-source licence. Kong’s FAQ states: “The Insomnia desktop app and related software packages are open source under the Apache License 2.0”, and that the server-side software that powers the paid sync service is closed source.[2] The FAQ also says Insomnia has no dedicated End User License Agreement. It is “governed by the Apache License 2.0, along with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy”, and a formal EULA “may be introduced in the future”.[2] Commercial use is allowed, and the FAQ points to the pricing page for plans.[2] Catalog proof: The Insomnia desktop app is Apache 2.0; the sync service is closed source and there is no EULA; Insomnia has no dedicated EULA and is governed by Apache 2.0 and its Terms of Service.

Service licence. For the Services and Software Kong grants “a limited, personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to access and use the Services and Software”, and customers may not “reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any portion of the Services”.[3] Software provided under a separate open-source licence is governed by that licence in a conflict.[3] Catalog proof: Insomnia Services and Software licence is limited, personal and non-transferable.

Data restrictions. Under the Product-Specific Terms, Project Data is Customer Content if the customer uses the Insomnia cloud services to store and share it. The customer “may not store or process any payment cardholder information (PCI) or protected health information (PHI) in Project Data through the Cloud Services”, and must configure local or its own Git storage for such data.[4] Kong has no obligation to store or make available Customer Content after termination or expiry.[4] Catalog proof: No PCI or PHI in Insomnia Cloud project data. The Terms of Service add that data sent to AI tools in the product is not end-to-end encrypted and is not Project Data.[3]

Programs

  • Insomnia Scratch Pad and 14-day Enterprise trial. The page offers a free 14-day trial with no credit card required, with access to Enterprise features including SSO, SCIM provisioning and vault integrations. The Scratch Pad is local-only and free.[1]
  • Support. The Terms of Service say technical support is available to paid account holders through Insomnia social channels and email.[3] Kong’s Support and Maintenance Policy states that for Insomnia products suspected Errors are classified Severity Level 3 or 4 only, and that Kong supports Insomnia under the policy if the customer has bought an Insomnia support subscription that references it. It supports Kong Insomnia Enterprise for the most current released version.[5] Catalog proof: Insomnia support requires a support subscription and errors are Severity 3 or 4.
  • Enterprise agreements. Enterprise purchases made through an Order Form fall under the Kong Customer Agreement, which incorporates the Product-Specific Terms and Support Policy.[8] See Kong Customer Agreement and Product-Specific Terms.

Out of scope

This article does not cover the Insomnia privacy policy, the data processing addendum, plugins published by third parties, or the licence of third-party libraries bundled in the desktop application. It does not state a price for Enterprise above 50 users, which the pricing page directs to sales. The Terms of Service describe the product under the name Insomnia and are offered by Kong Inc.[3]
