Ellucian SaaS and on-premises deployment

This article is about the deployment models of Ellucian Student, the Ellucian Platform, Banner and Colleague (SaaS, hosted by Ellucian or run by the customer), Ellucian Ethos and Ellucian Experience, and the Anthology SIS and ERP systems Ellucian acquired. For AI see Ellucian AI pricing and AI Requests.

On This Page

Ellucian deployment covers how a college or university receives and runs Ellucian software: as a SaaS service operated by Ellucian, as Banner or Colleague installed and run by the institution, or as a hybrid of the two. In 2026 Ellucian presents SaaS as its direction. It launched Ellucian Student on 2026-04-21, “unifying Student, Human Capital Management (HCM), and Finance on a single, AI-native SaaS platform”.[2] It also keeps supporting on-premises Banner and Colleague, and since the close of the Anthology SIS and ERP acquisition on 2025-12-31 it supports a third family of systems.[13] Which commercial terms follow each route are set in the institution’s agreement and are not public.

Editions

Ellucian Student and the Ellucian Platform. Ellucian describes the Ellucian Platform as the layer that “drives the user experience, data insights, business processes, and integrations”, with five capabilities: Central Workspace, Reporting and Analytics, Business Process Automation, Data Orchestration and Document Management.[3] Its March 2026 blog says Ellucian Student is “designed as a SaaS-native solution” with automatic updates and embedded automation, reporting, data orchestration and compliance tools “through the Ellucian Platform”.[1]

Banner and Colleague. The same blog says “Banner and Colleague on-premises systems were designed for a different era” and that “Ellucian Student is not simply hosted Banner or Colleague”.[1] A 2023 press release nonetheless names “Ellucian Banner SaaS” and notes that the customer’s CIO described a path “from on-premise to the cloud”, and a customer story describes migrating on-premises Colleague to “the SaaS-based Ellucian Platform”.[6][7] The catalog records Banner SaaS, Colleague on the Ellucian Platform and Banner and Colleague on-premises as separate offerings because Ellucian describes them separately.

Ethos and Experience. Ellucian Ethos is an integration capability. A customer story says Ethos integrates systems such as a course evaluation product and the SIS, and that third-party vendors that have worked with Ethos can treat connection as “plug-and-play”.[8] Ellucian’s current Data Orchestration page describes a low-code integration capability with “pre-built connectors and APIs” that extends Ellucian Student without custom code.[4] Ellucian Experience is described as providing a central work hub with push notifications and SMS capabilities.[5] The catalog rows are Ellucian Ethos and Ellucian Experience. Whether Ethos and Experience are licensed separately, bundled in SaaS, or included in maintenance for on-premises customers is not stated publicly.

Anthology SIS and ERP. Ellucian “will continue to deliver and maintain Anthology’s existing SIS and ERP systems” for more than 260 customers.[13]

Metrics

Ellucian publishes no licence metric for the SaaS, on-premises or Anthology products. The only counted units in its public documents relate to AI and support, covered in Ellucian AI pricing and AI Requests and Ellucian Customer Center terms and maintenance. In particular, no public page ties SaaS pricing or on-premises licensing to FTE, headcount or enrolment.

Counting / floors

No counting or floor rules are public. Ellucian’s 2023 press release says Ellucian had “more than 1,600” customers leveraging SaaS solutions, which counts customers, not licensed units.[6] A licence manager comparing on-premises Banner or Colleague with a SaaS offer therefore needs the institution’s existing agreement and the SaaS order, because the public documents give no basis for equating the two.

Virtualization & partitioning

No public document addresses virtualisation, partitioning or server counts. A customer story in which Colleague is “maintained in-house” shows that some customers run the application and its infrastructure themselves, so such terms may exist in their private agreements.[8] Ellucian also sells managed services in which its specialists “install, configure, and manage database environments for vendor-specific systems” and administer application environments for customers.[10]

Cloud / BYOL

Three cloud arrangements appear in public documents. First, Ellucian-operated SaaS, where Ellucian says updates are “continuous” rather than “periodic upgrades”.[1] Second, Ellucian cloud support: the Customer Center FAQ lists Action Line and Cloud support, and states that customers do not update Cloud Change records directly but give feedback through the approval email or the case.[11] Third, hybrid use, in which Ethos applications run alongside an in-house Colleague. A Hawkeye Community College administrator said that with Colleague “maintained in-house” the staff must confirm each connection after maintenance, “We don’t need to do that with our Ethos applications.”[8] That is a customer’s description, not a contract term. No public document offers bring-your-own-licence credit when moving from on-premises software to SaaS.

Ellucian also ties advanced AI to SaaS: “That is why advanced AI depends on SaaS.”[1] An institution that stays on-premises should therefore not assume that the AI included in the Ellucian Student subscription applies to its installation.

Programs

Navigate to SaaS (N2S). Ellucian’s implementation methodology “guides institutions through successful modernization” and is “Built for Ellucian SaaS products”. It includes a Modernization Studio that scans legacy environments, preconfigured sandbox environments, and reference models (HERM, HEEAR and CARM) for migration plans.[9] On pacing Ellucian says institutions can “Modernize capability by capability or value stream by value stream, in planned waves aligned to institutional priorities”, so a single move to SaaS in one step is not required.[1] One Ellucian blog gives an example of a two-year public institution with 13 IT staff that moved to the Ellucian Platform in 17 months.[5] The consequence for licence management is that an institution mid-migration may hold on-premises entitlements and SaaS subscriptions for different capabilities at the same time. Catalog programme: Navigate to SaaS modernization.

Managed Services. Technology Operations Services include Administrative Application Services (support, planning and reports, custom solutions), Application Modernization Services for applications “such as Colleague”, and Application Management Services for databases and environments.[10]

Anthology continuity. Ellucian said that Anthology customers see no immediate changes: “Existing agreements remain in place”, systems and support channels stay the same, integrations and customisations continue to operate, and billing changes, if any, “will be communicated”.[12] The Customer Center migration FAQ states that the support migration “only includes Anthology Customer Support, Community, Academy, and Idea Exchange” and that customer product environments “will be managed separately”.[14] Catalog programme: Anthology SIS and ERP continuity.

Contract terms

None of these pages is a contract. The agreement that governs is the institution’s “software license, services and/or maintenance agreement”.[15] Customer-relevant points that Ellucian does state publicly are that SaaS updates are continuous, that Ellucian Student is a different operating model from Banner and Colleague on-premises, and that Anthology customers keep their existing agreements. A licence manager should treat each as a vendor statement to verify against the signed documents.

Audits and compliance

No public document describes audits or usage verification for deployed software. Anthology’s acquisition pages say there are no changes to “data hosting, security protocols, or compliance requirements” for those customers.[12]

Out of scope

  • Entitlement conversion between on-premises and SaaS, SaaS service levels and exit terms, which are not public.
  • Security certifications, data centre locations and uptime commitments.
  • Ellucian’s other products, such as the Ellucian Intelligent Learning Platform, which appear in public pages without licensing statements.
  • Blackboard and Encoura customers, who are told to continue using existing systems for support, community and ideas.[14]
