Ellucian AI pricing is the commercial model under which Ellucian supplies the artificial intelligence features of Ellucian Student and the Ellucian Platform. Ellucian’s page titled AI Pricing says: “Ellucian Student gives you high-value agentic AI from day one, built on higher ed context, included in your core subscription.”[1] It positions this against consumption-based AI pricing, and states “No tokens to purchase. No credits to track. No meters to manage. No variable pricing or unexpected costs.”[1] The model is unusual enough among software vendors that licence managers should record exactly what is, and is not, promised. This article separates Ellucian’s statements from the contract terms that the public documents do not give.
Editions
Ellucian describes one AI offering rather than editions. Ellucian AI is “built directly into the platform and included in your subscription”.[1] The April 2026 launch of Ellucian Student says it embeds AI “directly into campus operations” and that “Ellucian Agents automate and standardize work across departments by reflecting institutional policies, processes, and compliance expectations”.[4] The AI Pricing page states that AI is “not sold back as an add-on” and that “the essential transactions, processes, and workflows that run your institution stay in the subscription”.[1] The catalog row is Ellucian AI and Ellucian Agents.
Two limits on this picture follow from Ellucian’s own pages. First, the statements are about Ellucian Student. The pages do not say whether on-premises Banner or Colleague customers receive the same AI, and the March 2026 blog says “advanced AI depends on SaaS”.[5] Second, the page speaks of “pre-built AI capabilities”, so custom or third-party AI that an institution adds may fall outside the included set; the public documents do not address this.[1]
Metrics
| Unit | Catalog row | What Ellucian says |
|---|---|---|
| AI Request | AI Request | “One resolved task counts as one AI Request, regardless of how many steps, systems, or policies were involved behind the scenes.”[1] |
| Core subscription | Institution-sized core subscription | “One core subscription price. It includes pre-built AI capabilities sized to your institution. No per-seat fees, no metering, no separate AI line item.”[1] |
An AI Request is therefore a measure of completed work, not of model consumption. Ellucian says “Ellucian absorbs the complexity so your costs stay predictable”, so a task that needs many steps, systems or policy checks still counts once.[1] The page names AI Requests in the context of how complexity is counted but does not publish a quantity of AI Requests included, a threshold, or consequences of exceeding one. Whether AI Requests are a billing unit, a monitoring unit, or both is not stated.
Counting / floors
The AI Pricing FAQ gives these answers to licensing questions:[1]
- Cost. “One core subscription price”, sized to the institution, with “No per-seat fees, no metering, no separate AI line item.”
- Pay per use. “No.” There are “no tokens or credits to buy, nothing to ration, and no usage-based charges.”
- Growth. “Pricing is flat and predictable, with no variable pricing and no surprise costs as adoption grows across campus.”
- Complexity. More complex work does not cost more, because one resolved task is one AI Request.
- Tracking. “Admin dashboards show usage and adoption across the institution, and Ellucian’s System of Intelligence provides oversight and forecasting.”
The phrase “sized to your institution” is the only sizing statement. It does not say whether size means enrolment, FTE, employees, modules or a negotiated tier. Because the price is described as fixed within the subscription, a change in institutional size would matter at renewal or whenever the subscription is re-sized under the contract, and the contract, not the web page, determines when. No floor, cap or fair-use limit is mentioned on the page, which says “no caps”.[1] A licence manager should ask for any fair-use or acceptable-use clause in the order, since the web page does not say whether one exists.
Virtualization & partitioning
Not applicable. The AI features run inside Ellucian’s platform. The Responsible AI page says AI outputs “operate within your institution’s roles, permissions, and policies, so users only see what they’re authorized to see”, which is an access-control statement and not a licensing rule.[2]
Cloud / BYOL
The AI is part of Ellucian’s SaaS platform. Ellucian says Ellucian AI is “trained on the Ellucian Higher Education Knowledge Graph with more than 10,000 workflows and processes”.[1] The Knowledge Graph page describes it as “a living catalog of institutional intelligence” built on 60 years of higher education expertise and 10,000 higher education processes, and the launch release describes it as “nearly 10,000 unique higher education workflows”.[3][4] There is no bring-your-own-model or bring-your-own-licence option described.
Programs
The one programme is AI included in the core subscription. Ellucian presents it as budget certainty: a scenario describes a CFO who approves the annual technology budget in June and “knows exactly what AI will cost for the year”, with no usage pilots, demand modelling or consumption dashboard to monitor.[1] The same page compares what it calls Ellucian’s “all-in, request-based approach” with consumption pricing, which is a vendor’s own comparison.[1]
Contract terms
The public pages make data statements that a licence manager should match against the institution’s data protection terms:
- “Customer data is never shared or used to train external models.”[2]
- In the FAQ the wording is narrower: “We do not use your data to train third-party general-purpose AI models.”[2]
- “Where institutional data is used, it is protected and de-identified, and it is never shared across institutions without full consent.”[2]
- Governance: AI “operates within institutional policies, governance guardrails, and regulatory requirements”, with people making the final decisions, and the page cites regulations such as FERPA.[2]
The two training statements differ in scope, one referring to external models and one to third-party general-purpose models, and neither addresses whether Ellucian uses de-identified customer data to improve its own models beyond the passage on de-identification. The binding wording is in the agreement.
Audits and compliance
The AI Pricing page does not describe any audit of AI use. Ellucian says its published ethics and data use standards date from 2020, and that outcomes are “traceable, auditable, and ready for review”, which concerns the customer’s audit of AI decisions, not Ellucian’s audit of the customer’s licence.[2] Admin dashboards for usage and adoption are the stated monitoring tool.[1]
Out of scope
- The quantity of AI Requests included, any fair-use limits, the sizing basis and price, none of which are published.
- Third-party AI features offered by Ellucian partners.
- Whether Banner, Colleague or Anthology on-premises customers can use Ellucian AI.
- The technical AI architecture, models used and subprocessors.
