- BYOL customers with active Software Assurance or subscription licenses may run passive SQL Server instances on AWS without licensing SQL Server on them, as long as passive licensing needs do not exceed the corresponding active instances (the OS must still be licensed). For license-included SQL Server, SQL HA waives SQL Server fees on standby nodes; an active node covers standby nodes only up to its own vCPU count, and vCPUs of different active nodes cannot be combined.
