- Definition
- Cluster license keys documentation: "The cluster license key enables Redis Software features and determines shard usage and limits." Support Policy: a Database Instance is any Redis process, including a master, a replica, or a process that "acts as a shard of a clustered database".
- Counting rules
- Shard limits are enforced per cluster by the licence key. Since version 7.2, limits are enforced by shard type (RAM or flash) instead of total shards; the cluster_shards_limit and bdb_shards_used metrics expose quota and consumption. Master and replica shards both count (the trial limit of 4 shards explicitly includes replicas).
- Floors / minimums
- Trial mode: 30 days and 4 shards. Each cluster, including passive or cold standby DR clusters, needs its own licence.
