Native Instruments licensing

This article is an overview of how Native Instruments licenses its music production software and subscriptions. Deeper articles cover the EULA and activation, Komplete and Kontakt, licence transfer and resale, and the 360 subscription with Plugin Alliance. It is not legal advice.

On This Page

Native Instruments is a Berlin-based publisher of music production software and hardware, including the Komplete bundles, the Kontakt sampler, Massive X, Guitar Rig, Traktor and Maschine. Its software is licensed by inMusic NI GmbH under an End User License Agreement (EULA) that was in its latest version dated 1 July 2026 at retrieval, and its subscription offers under separate Subscription Terms with the same effective date.[1][2] The licensing model suits individual producers more than organisations: licences are tied to a user account and a serial number, there is no volume programme in the documents retrieved, and enterprise tools such as centralised licence servers are not described. For a software asset manager at a studio, school or broadcaster, the questions that matter are how many devices a licence covers, whether a single account may be shared, which products can be resold, and what changes when a subscription lapses.

Editions

The product lines named on the publisher’s pages fall into four groups. Komplete bundles collect instruments, effects and sounds in editions: Komplete 26 is sold as Standard, Ultimate and Collector’s Edition, with the entry-level Komplete Select sold in Beats, Band and Electronic editions.[5] Kontakt 8 is the full sampler and Kontakt 8 Player is a free player for Native Instruments instruments and libraries made for the Player platform.[6] Individual instruments and effects are sold as separate perpetual products. The 360 subscription offers Essentials, Plus and Pro tiers that bundle plugins and sounds for a recurring fee.[7] Native Access is the free tool that downloads, activates and updates every product (Native Access).[4] The catalog lists the SKUs separately (Komplete 26 Standard, Komplete 26 Ultimate, Komplete 26 Collector’s Edition, Kontakt 8, 360 Plus).

Metrics

Native Instruments does not publish a named licence metric. Each purchase is a licence to use the product, evidenced by a serial number registered to a Native ID account in Native Access, and the EULA allows installation on three devices.[1] The catalog records the practical units as Registered serial number, Activated device and Native ID account for perpetual products, and 360 subscription tier for the subscription. These are inventory descriptions of how the documents count entitlements, not vendor-defined metrics.

Counting / floors

The EULA states that a licensee may install and personally use the software on three devices, for example one computer, one laptop and one workstation, provided the software is used regularly on only one of them, and that simultaneous use on more than one hardware device is not permitted (Three devices, one in regular use).[1] The Products may not be used on a network by multiple users unless each user possesses a licence.[1] A support article on activation limits states two computers, with three for Komplete and Maschine, which differs from the three-device wording of the EULA; the two documents are discussed in the EULA article.[9] There is no minimum purchase.

Virtualization & partitioning

No Native Instruments document retrieved addresses virtual machines, terminal servers or remote desktop. The EULA covers hardware devices, and the activation procedure encodes information about essential system components of the computer into an Activation Request Code that yields an activation key working only on that computer.[1] Deployments on shared lab machines or cloned images are therefore governed by the device and network clauses and the activation mechanism, and the documents do not describe an institutional alternative.

Cloud / BYOL

Native Instruments offers no cloud-hosted service in the documents retrieved. Registration and activation require an internet connection, and the product pages state that once installed all products can be used offline, except for the 360 subscription, which must connect through Native Access once a month so that the subscription can renew.[5][7]

Programs

The documents describe several programs that affect how licences are bought and held. Licence transfer lets an owner sell a product by deregistering it and passing a License Transfer ID to the buyer, with exclusions for educational, not-for-resale and recent registrations (License Transfer).[8] Educational and not-for-resale licences are restricted versions defined in the EULA (EDU licence, NFR licence).[1] Komplete uses tiered update and upgrade prices that depend on the generation of Komplete registered to the account (Komplete update and upgrade pricing).[5] The 360 subscription has a 14-day free trial before monthly billing begins (360 free trial).[7]

Group companies and acquired brands

The retrieved Native Instruments support pages state that Native Instruments is now part of inMusic and that iZotope is now part of Boris FX, and that the 360 subscription is moving to mixing and mastering tools from Plugin Alliance and Brainworx.[10] Plugin Alliance publishes its own EULA, last updated 6 May 2024, under which its software is licensed on up to three hardware units, so a studio that holds Plugin Alliance products alongside Native Instruments products manages two sets of terms.[11] The 360 article covers this in detail. Webshop purchases are governed by inMusic NI GmbH’s terms and conditions dated July 2026, which make agreement to the EULA a prerequisite for use of the software.[3]

Contract documents

A Native Instruments entitlement is governed by several documents at once. The EULA covers perpetual software and carries the licences of third-party components; the Subscription Terms cover 360 and any other subscription offer; the webshop terms and conditions cover the sale itself, including delivery by download, and state that agreement to the EULA and any additional licence agreements, including those of third parties, is a prerequisite for using the software.[1][2][3] The publisher’s legal information page also indexes gift card terms, partner portal terms and an index of NKS partners’ own licence agreements, which apply to third-party products sold or registered through Native Instruments.[12] Support articles, such as those on activation limits and transfers, describe practice and are undated; where they differ from the dated EULA, the EULA is the contract text, and the catalog records both statements.[9]

An entitlement register for Native Instruments products therefore benefits from recording the Native ID that holds each serial, the licence type (retail, upgrade, NFR, EDU, demo, subscription or third-party), the registration date, the devices on which the product is installed, and the version of Komplete registered, because update and upgrade prices and transfer eligibility depend on those fields.[8][5]

Out of scope

This article does not cover Native Instruments hardware warranties, drivers, the terms of third-party Kontakt library developers (which are published by each developer), the licence terms of products from iZotope after its transfer to Boris FX, or pricing outside the storefront region retrieved. It does not interpret German law, which governs the EULA.[1]
