MongoDB Atlas billing is the set of metering rules MongoDB applies to its managed database service. Atlas is offered in two database editions: Atlas Core, where compute and storage run on the same node, and Atlas Infinite, which separates compute from storage and was in public preview at the time of writing.[5] Clusters are pay-as-you-go, “billed hourly with monthly invoices”, and add-on services carry their own units.[1] How those charges are paid (pay-as-you-go, prepaid credits or commitments) is covered in MongoDB licensing; this article covers what is metered.
Editions
| Edition | Cluster types | How compute and storage are billed |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas Core | Free, Flex and dedicated cluster tiers[6] | Per cluster-tier hour; the tier’s default storage is in the hourly price[3] |
| Atlas Infinite (public preview) | M10 to M60 General and M40 to M60 Low-CPU replica sets, AWS only[5] | Compute per HA shard per hour; storage and backup in GB-hours[4] |
The pricing page lists Atlas Core at $0/hour for Free (512MB of storage), $0.011/hour for Flex (up to $30/month) and from $0.08/hour for Dedicated, and Atlas Infinite from $0.09/hour, “available on M10+ dedicated clusters”.[1] Dedicated list prices by tier, as shown on the pricing page’s Dedicated Cluster table, are catalogued as SKUs: MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M10 ($0.08/hr), MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M20 ($0.20/hr), MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M30 ($0.54/hr), MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M40 ($1.04/hr), MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M50 ($2.00/hr) and MongoDB Atlas Dedicated cluster M60 ($3.95/hr), with MongoDB Atlas Infinite cluster as the Infinite entry. MongoDB states that this pricing “is based on the default storage listed” and that actual pricing varies with configuration and location.[1]
The edition is fixed at creation. During the preview, MongoDB says a cluster’s database edition cannot be changed “in either direction between Atlas Core and Atlas Infinite”, and that live migration and backup restore between the editions are not supported. Atlas Infinite also carries no uptime SLA in public preview.[5] Catalog: Atlas Infinite: database edition cannot be changed after cluster creation.
Metrics
| MongoDB unit | Catalog row | Applies to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server hours | Server hours (Atlas clusters) | Atlas Core clusters | Manage Billing |
| HA shard | HA shard (Atlas Infinite compute) | Atlas Infinite compute | Atlas Infinite Cluster Costs[4] |
| GB-hours | GB-hours (Atlas Infinite storage and backup) | Atlas Infinite storage and backup | Atlas Infinite Cluster Costs[4] |
| Stream processor hours | Stream processor hours (Atlas Stream Processing) | Atlas Stream Processing | Stream Processing billing[11] |
| Data processed (TB) | Data processed (Atlas Data Federation) | Data Federation, Online Archive queries | Data Federation Costs[12] |
| Private Endpoint Capacity Unit | Atlas Private Endpoint Capacity Unit | Private endpoints | Additional Services[9] |
MongoDB defines an HA shard as “a two-node compute billing unit that consists of a primary and a standby”, a billing unit only and distinct from a MongoDB shard.[4]
Counting / floors
Atlas Core clusters
Each cluster tier has a default RAM, storage capacity and storage speed included in its per-hour charge. If a customer customizes the storage capacity, “Atlas charges for the full amount of storage” and does not deduct the default.[3] A paused cluster is charged for storage only: “Atlas does not charge for any other services or data transfer on paused clusters.”[3] Catalog: Atlas paused clusters: only storage is charged.
Flex clusters are “capped at $30 per month”. The monthly base includes 5GB storage, 100 operations per second and unlimited data transfer; use above 100 operations per second moves the cluster through priced tiers up to 500 operations per second ($0.0411 per hour, $30.00 per month).[7] MongoDB says a Flex user pays “between $8 and $30 for 30 days of usage”.[7]
Atlas Infinite
Atlas Infinite meters compute, storage and backup as independent dimensions, hourly. Compute is metered on the configured cluster tier of the HA shards and any additional nodes, and “Atlas bills compute for your provisioned nodes even when the cluster is idle”.[4] Catalog: Atlas Infinite: compute billed for provisioned nodes even when idle.
Storage is metered on the volume of uncompressed logical data, including the oplog, in GB-hours. Backup is a separate GB-hour dimension; 24 hours of continuous cloud backup are included, and retention beyond that window is billed as backup rather than cluster storage.[4] Catalog: Atlas Infinite: 24 hours of continuous backup included; longer retention billed as backup. Replication inside the storage layer does not count toward data transfer.[4]
Data transfer
Atlas tabulates data transfer costs daily, priced by cloud provider and by the source and destination region.[8] Incoming transfer is free, and Free and Flex clusters are not charged for outgoing data.[8] Catalog: Atlas data transfer: incoming transfer free; Free and Flex clusters not charged for outgoing data. MongoDB notes that queries from on-premises environments, across cloud providers or between continents incur the highest transfer costs.[8]
Add-on services
| Service | How it is charged | Catalog |
|---|---|---|
| Search Nodes | 2 to 32 nodes per cluster, each billed hourly; a partial hour is a full hour; after a search tier change both instances are billed for the first hour[10] | Atlas Search Nodes: 2 to 32 nodes, each billed hourly with a full hour for partial use, Atlas Search Nodes: both instances billed for the first hour after a search tier change |
| Stream Processing | Per stream processor per hour by tier (SP2 to SP50), only while running, recorded in one-second increments; storage is not charged[11] | Atlas Stream Processing: billed only while running, in one-second increments |
| Data Federation | $5.00 per TB processed, rounded up to the nearest megabyte, 10 MB minimum per query, plus data returned and transferred[12] | Atlas Data Federation: $5.00 per TB processed with a 10 MB minimum per query |
| Online Archive | Storage by gigabytes and days stored; queries at the Data Federation rate of $5.00 per TB processed[13] | None |
| Private endpoints | Hourly per endpoint per region, plus Private Endpoint Capacity Units for traffic[9] | Atlas Private Endpoint Capacity Unit |
The stream processor tiers are catalogued with their AWS us-east-1 hourly rates: Atlas Stream Processing SP2 stream processor, Atlas Stream Processing SP5 stream processor, Atlas Stream Processing SP10 stream processor, Atlas Stream Processing SP30 stream processor and Atlas Stream Processing SP50 stream processor. Rates differ by provider and region.[11]
For AWS private endpoints, a capacity unit covers three dimensions (new connections, active connections and processed bytes), and “Atlas charges you only for the dimension that has the highest usage during each hour across all traffic types”. On Azure and Google Cloud, a unit is 1 GB of data processed.[9]
Security and auditing uplifts
Two features add a percentage to cluster charges unless the organization has Atlas Enterprise or Atlas Platinum support:[9]
- Advanced Security. A 15% uplift on each cluster with LDAP User Authentication and Authorization or Encryption at Rest using Customer Key Management. LDAP set at project level applies to every cluster in the project. Catalog: Atlas Advanced Security: 15% uplift for LDAP or customer-managed encryption keys.
- Database Auditing. A 10% uplift on the hourly cost of all dedicated clusters in projects that use Database Auditing. Catalog: Atlas Database Auditing: 10% uplift on dedicated clusters.
The pricing page states that the Atlas SQL Interface on dedicated clusters is billed as a daily uplift on cluster spend, which Atlas Enterprise and Platinum support customers do not pay.[1]
Virtualization & partitioning
Atlas is a managed service; the customer does not license hosts, cores or partitions. Capacity is chosen as a cluster tier (Atlas Core) or as HA shards and added nodes (Atlas Infinite).[3][4] Self-managed counting under the Server metric is covered in MongoDB Enterprise Advanced.
Cloud / BYOL
Atlas runs on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, and prices vary between them and between regions.[1] Atlas Infinite deploys on AWS only during the public preview.[5] MongoDB publishes no program to bring Enterprise Advanced entitlements into Atlas.

Support plans
The Cloud Services Support Policy (last updated 2026-05-05) defines four paid Atlas subscriptions and their Severity Level 1 initial response goals:[14]
| Plan | Severity 1 initial response goal | Channels |
|---|---|---|
| MongoDB Atlas Platinum | 15 minutes | Phone or web |
| MongoDB Atlas Enterprise | 30 minutes | Phone or web |
| MongoDB Atlas Pro | 2 hours | Phone or web |
| MongoDB Atlas Developer | 8 hours | Web only |
Support for Atlas is tied to the MongoDB Server version the cluster runs; each Major Release is supported for 5 years from its release date, and MongoDB has no obligation to support a version past its end-of-life date.[14] Each registration for Support carries a 30-day minimum under the Cloud Terms of Service.[15] Support charges appear on the invoice, are spread across the cloud providers that host the usage, and the support minimum is calculated once per month for the whole organization.[9]
Cross-organization billing
A paying organization with an Atlas subscription can pay for linked organizations. “Linked organizations are subject to the subscription agreement of the paying organization, including the level of support, the charges associated with the subscription, discounts, and payment terms.” At the end of the billing period, an unmet monthly minimum is billed to linked and paying organizations in proportion to their usage. A paying organization can link up to 250 organizations; more requires contacting support.[2] Catalog: Atlas cross-organization billing: linked organizations follow the paying organization’s subscription.
