Mitel MiCollab, UCC and subscription bundles

This article covers how Mitel licenses MiCollab users with MiVoice Business: perpetual Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) bundles, à la carte licences, the MiVoice Business Subscription Ed.2 bundles, and which license server (AMC or SLS) holds each. For MiVoice Business platform licences see Mitel MiVoice Business licensing.

On This Page

Mitel MiCollab, UCC and subscription bundles are the per-user packages Mitel uses to license MiCollab unified communications together with MiVoice Business telephony. Bundling replaces separate purchases of a MiCollab licence, a PBX user licence and individual application licences with one licence per user.[6] Two families exist: perpetual UCC bundles and monthly MiVoice Business Subscription Ed.2 bundles. MiCollab Server documents both under “Manage License Bundles”.[4] The general framework is in Mitel licensing.

Licences for both families are applied in the partner’s license bank in the AMC or SLS. MiCollab must synchronize with its license server over the internet to obtain the current bundle definitions.[4]

Editions

UCC bundles (perpetual)

UCC licensing “bundles the platform and application user licenses together”. Mitel says it offers “a significant pricing discount over ‘à la carte’ licenses” and “tiered functionality with progressive discounts”.[1] The current version is UCC V4.0, supported from MiCollab 7.0.[1]

It is the designation that installed platform user licences can be converted to, so that they can later be upgraded to Entry or Standard.[1] The General Information Guide describes the target users as an office-based worker for UCC Entry and a mobile information worker for UCC Standard.[6]

MiVoice Business Subscription Ed.2 bundles (monthly)

“MiVoice Business Subscription licensing provides User licensing based on a monthly subscription”. The name covers the whole MiVoice Business solution, including applications such as MBG and MiCollab.[2]

Bundle Description (Mitel)
MiVB Telephony (Ed.2) Voice only with Analog, SIP or MiNet phone plus voicemail and MiCollab Web client
MiVB Entry (Ed.2) Full UC with multiple phones and MiCollab, including PC and mobile softphones
MiVB Premier (Ed.2) Expanded UC (SMS, third-party video cross launch, VDI) with MiCollab for desk, soft and mobile phones
MiVB Elite CX (Ed.2) Expanded UC plus full Contact Center voice agent, CRM integration and MiVB Console

Metrics

Both families count one bundle per user: the UCC User License and the MiVB Subscription user bundle. The UCC rules state that “you just order a single UCC license per user”.[1] Assigning a bundle is a configuration action: a role or template applied to the user in MiCollab’s Users and Services application sets the “User License Bundle” field.[3]

Counting / floors

Whole-bundle consumption. “When a UCC license bundle is assigned to a user, all the services provided in that bundle are consumed by that user, even if the services are not configured.” A bundle cannot be split across users in a system or across MiCollab systems that share the user.[1] MiCollab licences in a UCC bundle apply to one MiCollab application record in the AMC; Subscription Ed.2 bundles likewise apply to a single MiCollab application record in SLS.[1][2] Catalog proof: A UCC bundle consumes all its services, cannot be split.

Hard cap at the licensed count. For both families, once the in-use count of a bundle type equals the licensed count, MiCollab refuses to assign another bundle of that type. The Licensing Information page shows available and in-use counts.[1][3] Unlike MiVoice Business platform licences, bundles therefore cannot be over-allocated. Catalog proof: Bundle assignment is capped at the licensed bundle count.

Downgrades. With MiVoice Business, downgrading a user’s UCC bundle in MiCollab does not delete the user’s services. MiCollab tries to cover the extra services with available à la carte licences. “If ‘à la carte’ licenses are not available, then a license violation is generated.”[1] A downgrade intended to free a higher-tier bundle should therefore include removing the services as well. Catalog proof: Downgrading a UCC bundle can create a license violation.

Upgrades. Upgrading a user from one UCC tier to another moves one licence between the counts, for example from Basic to Standard. Services from the higher tier must then be assigned manually.[1] Templates apply only when new users are created, so existing users changed to a new bundle also need their phone and application services assigned manually.[4]

Migration between licence families

From To Allowed?
À la carte UCC No migration; UCC can be added alongside à la carte[1]
Installed platform user licences UCC Basic Convertible, to allow upgrades to Entry or Standard[1]
UCC V2.0 or V3.0 UCC V4.0 Automatic on upgrade to MiCollab 7.0, with active Software Assurance[1]
À la carte MiVB Subscription Ed.2 No[2]
UCC on an AMC-synchronized server MiVB Subscription Ed.2 on SLS Server can be resynchronized with SLS, but under a new ARID[2]

Catalog proof: No migration of à la carte licences to UCC; UCC conversion on upgrade requires active Software Assurance; À la carte licences cannot migrate to MiVB Subscription Ed.2.

Moving to subscription is therefore a re-licensing, not a conversion. Perpetual à la carte entitlements stay perpetual. In a pooled MiVoice Business network they also cannot share a Designated License Manager with subscription licences; see Mitel MiVoice Business licensing.

License servers

Deployment License server Record identifier
MiCollab with MiVoice Business or MiVoice 250 (UCC, à la carte) Licenses & Services AMC (Application Management Center) Application Record ID (ARID)
MiVoice Business Subscription Ed.2 (new deployments only) SLS license server ServiceLink ID
MiCollab with MiVoice MX-ONE, MiVoice 5000 or MiVoice Office 400 SLS license server ServiceLink ID

Source: Support and Licensing.[5] Existing MX-ONE, MiVoice 5000 and MiVoice Office 400 sites can keep receiving licences from the AMC “until the site administrator adds or changes licensing (e.g. UCC licenses, SWA, etc)”. After such a change, licences come from SLS.[5] Unlike the AMC, SLS issues vouchers by server type, MiCollab or PBX, which are applied separately, and it has no UCC group license manager option.[4][2] Catalog proof: MiCollab with MiVoice Business is licensed through AMC; Subscription Ed.2 through SLS; AMC uses the ARID to give access to licences, releases and upgrades.

Virtualization & partitioning

Bundles are per user and independent of the hosting platform. The Teleworker licences in UCC Standard can be used only if the MiCollab and MBG servers are clustered.[1]

Cloud / BYOL

Not covered by the retrieved documents. Mitel’s hosted offerings have separate terms.

Out of scope

  • Hardware, base system software, service provider interconnect licences and certain system options, which “remain separately purchasable licenses” outside UCC.[1]
  • UCC licensing for standalone applications and MiVoice Office 250, which is not supported.[1]
  • Bundle prices and part numbers, which Mitel does not publish.
