Adobe Named User licensing

Adobe Named User licensing is how Adobe licenses Term License Products and most Creative Cloud / Acrobat subscription Software: a license assigned to one individual User, unless the offering is indicated as Feature Restricted Licensing (FRL). Adobe’s Business Product Specific Terms (effective 7 October 2024) call that assignment a Named User license. Software Product Specific Terms (last updated 18 June 2024) let a Named User activate Software on up to two Computers at a time, not simultaneously; FRL is one Computer at a time. Acrobat Sign adds a Transaction consumable (default 150 Transactions per licensed user per 12-month period unless sales documentation sets another limit). Buying programs (VIP, ETLA) are how customers purchase those metrics, not additional units.

Metrics

The catalog has five rows for Adobe, each under Adobe’s own name. No Named-User↔Computer ratio beyond the two-Computer activation rule (FRL: one). ETLA and VIP Select are buying programs, not units.

5 Document Transaction Document Transaction Document Acrobat Services / PDF Services API: an initial endpoint request (API call) executing an Operation that produces a Document. Distinct from Acrobat Sign Transaction. Published page bands: Extract / PDF To Markdown 1 per up to 5 pages; Accessibility Auto-Tag 10 per page; Electronic Seal 10 per PDF; all other Operations 1 per up to 50 pages. Excess over Licensed Transactions must be purchased in advance. 

HelpX product descriptions still define User as an individual employee, contractor, or subcontractor of the customer’s enterprise who has access and who does not exceed the license quantity (Creative Cloud last updated 19 October 2019; Document Cloud 7 October 2015). Adobe still points enterprise customers to those product descriptions for license metrics.

Counting / floors

Named User count. Count one Named User license per individual Business User (Admin Console assignment). Prefer Business Product Specific Terms (October 2024) for the one-person and reassignment rules — do not cite 2018 Creative Cloud Teams/Enterprise Additional Terms as current for 30-day.[1]

Two Computers (activation floor, not a second Named User). Software Product Specific Terms §1.1 / §1.3: a subscription or Term License Product (non-FRL) lets you activate the Software on up to two Computers at a time; you may not use the Software on the two Computers simultaneously. This is an activation cap on Computer, not a second Named User.[2] Catalog proof: Subscription / Term License — two Computers, not simultaneous (backs Subscription / Term License — two Computers, not simultaneous).

Acrobat Sign Transactions (default floor). Unless sales documentation identifies another Transaction limit, each licensed user may send up to 150 Transactions during each 12-month license period. Transactions for a customer account are aggregated among all licensed users and do not carry over from one 12-month period to the next. A Transaction is each send of an Electronic Document (or related collection) up to 10 MB or 100 pages. Excess Licensed Transactions must be purchased in advance.[3] Catalog proof: Acrobat Sign Named-User — 150 Transactions / user / 12 months (backs Acrobat Sign Named-User — 150 Transactions / user / 12 months).

VIP Consumables (program term). Most unused Consumables expire on the last day of the License Term (VIP Terms §3.4.2, published and effective 15 July 2024).

No global Named User pack size. VIP Select starts at 10 licenses: that is a discount threshold, not a license floor.

Mobility

Named User reassignment — once every 30 days. Business Product Specific Terms (October 2024) §4: you may reassign a license from one Business User to another without an additional purchase, provided that, except as expressly permitted by Adobe, licenses may not be reassigned more than once every 30 days. Adobe gathers metrics on licenses deployed and re-deployed to Business Users.[1] Catalog proof: Named User reassignment — once every 30 days (backs Named User reassignment — once every 30 days). Prefer this October 2024 Business PST wording; do not treat 2018 CCT Additional Terms as current for 30-day.

Restrictions

One person; no floating / shared. Business PST §4: licenses may not be used in any shared license or similar deployment model that may indicate more than one person is using a single Named User license (including floating, leased, generic user, or shift license deployment).[1] Catalog proof: Named User — one person; no floating/shared (backs Named User — one person; no floating/shared).

FRL — one Computer at a time. Notwithstanding the two-Computer subscription / Term rule, Feature Restricted Licensing (FRL) offerings may only be activated on one Computer at a time (Software PST §1.1 / §1.3).[2] Catalog proof: FRL — one Computer at a time (backs FRL — one Computer at a time). HelpX still notes FRL Multi-User Offerings licensed Per-Computer “If available” (educational).

Device-based — installations ≤ licenses. If you purchased a Software license based on number of devices or virtual machines, the number of license installations may not exceed the total number of licenses purchased (Software PST §1.2). Distinct from Named User. No current public SKU list in the cited PDFs maps which Creative Cloud / Acrobat SKUs are device-based vs Named User vs FRL.[2] Catalog proof: Device-based — installations must not exceed licenses (backs Device-based — installations must not exceed licenses).

Virtualization

Adobe’s Computer definition: a virtual or physical device for storing or processing data. Where a device contains more than one virtual environment (including virtual machines and virtual processors), each virtual environment will be counted as a separate Computer.[2] Catalog proof: Each virtual environment counts as a Computer (backs Each virtual environment counts as a Computer). Adobe publishes no Named-User-to-vCPU conversion. Device-based licenses also count installations, including virtual machines, against purchased licenses (see Restrictions).

The adobe.com/go/vip_program_guide_en link incorporated by the VIP Terms now resolves to Adobe’s online VIP program overview (last updated 10 August 2026) rather than the 2019 PDF.[17] Program mechanics (Anniversary Date, discount levels, 3-year commit, auto-renewal) are covered in Adobe VIP and VIP Marketplace.

  • VIP / VIP Marketplace. Contractual: Adobe Value Incentive Plan Terms and Conditions, published and effective 15 July 2024. Incorporates the VIP Program Guide. VIP Select: 10 licenses or more during a subscription term (Program Guide). Anniversary Date is twelve months after Adobe accepts the initial order. Grace: 14 days (VIP) / seven days (VIP Marketplace) after adding Products in Admin Console (program term only).
  • ETLA. Buying Programs comparison (© 2020): 3-year agreement; license type Term. Live buying-programs page: “Minimum annual purchase required.” No public ETLA contract PDF was found, and Adobe publishes no ETLA seat counts or FTE formulas. Education copy mentioning FTE is educational only and was not confirmed in a contractual PDF.
  • Term License Products. Not subscription products; no product or feature updates, storage, or services (Software PSLT §1.3). Named User offerings unless indicated as FRL.

Out of scope

  • Generative credits. Covered in Adobe generative credits. As of 2026-09-26 Adobe’s Generative AI Features Terms page lists the Specific Licensing Terms for Adobe Generative Artificial Intelligence Features as version 2026v1, effective 31 July 2026, as the current version (this article previously noted a version effective 17 June 2025).[16]
