Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. The X.Org project provides an open source implementation of the X Window System; the X.Org Foundation is the educational non-profit corporation whose board serves the effort.[1]

  2. Since X11R7.7, the last full release of the stack, individual X.Org modules are released independently as needed.[2]

  3. The X Window System distribution is a compilation of code from many sources; users must check each file or package for precise redistribution terms.[3]

  4. Most licences in the distribution are based on the MIT, X Consortium or BSD licences, all consistent with the Open Source Definition.[4]

  5. The Foundation's preferred licence for new code is a slight variant of the MIT licence that permits use, modification, sublicensing and sale provided the notice is included.[5]
