Vim

Vim is a free, open-source text editor created by Bram Moolenaar and now maintained by the Vim project. It is distributed as charityware under the GPL-compatible Vim licence.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  • Freeware
  1. Vim is charityware: its licence is GPL-compatible and it is distributed freely, with users asked to donate to help children in Uganda if they find it useful.[1]

  2. The Vim licence places no restrictions on distributing unmodified copies of Vim other than including the licence text.[2]

  3. Modified versions may be distributed only if the licence text is included unmodified, the changes are made available in one of the ways the licence lists, and a message in :version and the intro screen shows that Vim was modified.[3]

  4. When the GNU GPL applies to the changes, a modified Vim may be distributed under GPL version 2 or any later version.[4]

  5. Donations made through the Vim sponsorship page go to the Kuwasha International Development Society, which supports a children's centre in southern Uganda.[5]
