SD Association

The SD Association is an industry body that sets SD memory card standards and publishes the SD Memory Card Formatter utility for Windows, Mac and Linux. The formatter is distributed free of charge under an end user licence agreement that limits use to formatting the licensee's own SD cards.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Freeware
  • Perpetual licence

  1. The SD Memory Card Formatter is offered for download for Windows, Mac, Linux x86_64 and Linux ARM64.[1]

  2. The EULA grants a non-exclusive, non-transferable, terminable, perpetual licence for each copy to install the software on the licensee's own hardware in the country where it was acquired and to operate it solely for internal business operations to format SD cards the licensee owns.[2]

  3. The licensee may make one copy of the software for backup and archival purposes only.[3]

  4. The EULA prohibits reverse engineering and renting, leasing, networking, sublicensing, distributing or otherwise transferring the software to third parties, including use in a service bureau or shared environment.[4]

  5. The agreement terminates immediately on breach; the licensee must then uninstall the software and certify its destruction or return it to the SD Association.[5]
