Riverbank Computing
Riverbank Computing develops PyQt, the Python bindings for the Qt framework, along with SIP and related tools. PyQt is dual-licensed under the GNU GPL v3 and the Riverbank Commercial License, which is sold per developer as a perpetual licence with a year of updates.
Licensing at a Glance
- Open source
- Perpetual licence
PyQt is dual licensed on all supported platforms under the GNU GPL v3 and the Riverbank Commercial License, and unlike Qt is not available under the LGPL.[1]
A commercial PyQt licence is needed when an application is distributed under a licence incompatible with the GPL; PyQt does not include Qt, which must be licensed separately.[2]
A commercial licence covers all of Riverbank's commercial products and is required for each developer using them at any one time; developer names are not registered.[3]
Licences are perpetual for the versions covered, include one year of updates, and can be renewed yearly for approximately 60% of the original purchase price.[4]
The listed cost per developer is USD 670.00, EUR 600.00 or GBP 510.00.[5]
Commercial licences apply to developers, not end users, so no licence is required for each copy of the application sold.[6]
