qBittorrent

The qBittorrent project develops qBittorrent, an open-source BitTorrent client for FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, OS/2 and Windows. The source code is licensed under the GPL version 2 or later and the binary distribution under the GPL version 3 or later, both with an OpenSSL linking exception.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. The qBittorrent source code is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2 or any later version, while the binary distribution is licensed under the GPL version 3 or any later version because it contains GPLv3+ assets such as images.[1]

  2. Both licences carry a special exception permitting the program to be linked with the OpenSSL library and the linked executables to be distributed.[2]

  3. The project describes qBittorrent as an open-source alternative to µTorrent that is based on the Qt toolkit and libtorrent-rasterbar and lists no ads among its features.[3]

  4. qBittorrent is developed by volunteers and funded by optional donations to server costs and the lead programmers.[4]
