OpenSSL

The OpenSSL project publishes the OpenSSL cryptography and TLS toolkit library. Releases from 3.0 onward are licensed under the Apache License 2.0; earlier releases use the dual OpenSSL and SSLeay licence.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. OpenSSL 3.0 and later releases, and the master branch, are licensed under the Apache License v2.[1]

  2. Every release made before OpenSSL 3.0 (1.1.1, 1.1.0, 1.0.2 and earlier), including later letter-suffix updates to those releases, is under the dual OpenSSL and SSLeay licence.[2]

  3. Each release contains a LICENSE file in its top-level directory stating which licence applies.[3]

  4. Every two years a release is designated Long Term Support (LTS) and supported for at least five years; version 3.5 is an LTS release supported until 2030-04-08.[4]

  5. Versions 3.0, 1.1.1 and 1.0.2 are no longer supported by the public project; extended support giving access to security fixes for those versions is offered separately.[5]
