OPC Foundation

The OPC Foundation develops the OPC industrial interoperability standards, including OPC UA, and publishes reference stacks, redistributable core components, samples and compliance test tools. Its source code is dual-licensed (RCL for corporate members, GPL 2.0 for others) with samples under MIT, and redistributables are free to install and distribute under an agreement of use.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  • Freeware
  1. OPC UA core components (OPC UA stacks and the Local Discovery Server) are dual-licensed: corporate members may use them under the RCL without disclosing application code, while non-members use them under GPL 2.0 and must disclose application code.[1]

  2. All samples and most utilities are provided under the MIT license for both members and non-members.[2]

  3. The OPC Redistributables agreement allows installing and using any number of copies and distributing the compiled code with programs you develop, provided the program adds significant primary functionality and carries its own copyright notice.[3]

  4. OPC Foundation deliverables are covered by separate agreements for specifications, source deliverables, redistributables, sample binaries and compliance test tools, and contributors must sign a Contributor License Agreement.[4]
