NetApp
NetApp makes the ONTAP storage operating system and data management software for its storage systems and for public clouds. On-premises systems are sold with ONTAP software suites, while Cloud Volumes ONTAP is licensed by capacity through NetApp or cloud marketplaces.
Licensing at a Glance
- Capacity (data, assets, nodes)
- Subscription
- Consumption / usage based
- Free tier
Since ONTAP 9.10.1 all licences are delivered as a NetApp license file (NLF) that enables multiple features, replacing the earlier 28-character per-feature keys.[1]
Since May 2023 all AFF and FAS systems are sold with either the ONTAP One or ONTAP Base software suite, and since June 2023 ASA systems are sold with ONTAP One for SAN.[2]
ONTAP One contains all available licensed functionality but excludes NetApp's cloud-delivered services; additional licences cannot be added to ONTAP Base, which requires an upgrade to ONTAP One.[3]
Cloud Volumes ONTAP is licensed by provisioned capacity (per TiB) against a NetApp account, bought as BYOL from NetApp or as annual or pay-as-you-go marketplace subscriptions.[4]
A Freemium package provides all Cloud Volumes ONTAP features free of NetApp charges for up to 500 GiB per system and up to 10 systems per account; cloud provider charges still apply.[5]
