Mono Project
The Mono Project is an open-source, cross-platform implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Runtime. The runtime, compilers, tools and most class libraries are MIT-licensed, and upstream stewardship has passed to the WineHQ organization.
Licensing at a Glance
- Open source
The Mono runtime, compilers and tools and most of the class libraries are licensed under the MIT license; some runtime code is BSD-licensed and some class libraries are under Apache 2.[1]
The Mono runtime and tools were relicensed to the MIT license as of 31 March 2016.[2]
The licensing FAQ states that commercial and proprietary applications can be written to run with Mono.[3]
Microsoft has issued a patent promise not to assert applicable patents against making, using or distributing Mono; the promise terminates for anyone who brings a patent claim against Mono.[4]
The last major Mono release was in July 2019, the last patch release in February 2024, and the WineHQ organization has taken over as steward of the upstream project.[5]
