Milestone Systems

Milestone Systems makes XProtect video management software (VMS) for IP video surveillance. XProtect is licensed with a base licence per product plus hardware device licences for connected cameras and other IP devices.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Per device

  1. A purchase delivers an order confirmation and a software licence file named after the Software License Code (SLC), which is needed at installation and activation.[1]

  2. Customers buy at least a base licence for an XProtect product and a hardware device licence for every hardware device added to the system.[2]

  3. Speakers, microphones and I/O devices attached to cameras need no extra device licence, and a video encoder needs one device licence per IP address even with several cameras attached.[3]

  4. Without a licence file the software runs as a 30-day trial with at most eight cameras and five days of retention.[4]

  5. Devices connected through a universal driver, or not on the Supported Device List, are licensed per enabled video channel rather than per device.[5]
