Eclipse Foundation

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit open-source organisation that hosts the Eclipse IDE, the Adoptium (Temurin) Java runtimes and many other projects. It stewards the Eclipse Public License 2.0 used by many of its projects, while some projects, such as the OpenJDK-based Temurin builds, use other licences.

Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. The SPDX identifier for the Eclipse Public License version 2.0 is EPL-2.0.[1]

  2. A program licensed under the EPL may be compiled without modification and licensed commercially, provided the distribution states where the source code can be obtained.[2]

  3. A proprietary product that includes EPL-licensed code may be distributed in object code under a single licence, as long as it references the EPL portion and complies with the EPL for that portion.[3]

  4. Modifications that are never distributed need not be shared, but distributing a modified EPL program, even as free object code, requires making its source code available.[4]

  5. Eclipse Adoptium build scripts and infrastructure are under the Apache License 2.0, while the OpenJDK code in Temurin binaries is under GPLv2 with Classpath Exception and GPLv2 with Assembly Exception.[5]
