Dolby Laboratories
Dolby Laboratories develops audio and imaging technologies such as Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, which it licenses to device makers who include them in their products. Dolby software found on PCs is typically OEM-bundled audio components, alongside the Dolby Access app for Windows and Xbox.
Licensing at a Glance
- OEM / bundled
Companies that want to include Dolby technologies in their products apply for a licence through a Dolby license application form, which asks for account, technology, product and financial information.[1]
Dolby then sends a contract to review, sign and return with the initial license fee, after which it provides the requested technology and implementation tools.[2]
Products containing Dolby technology must be submitted for testing; on approval the company becomes an official Dolby Licensee and is added to the Dolby Licensee list.[3]
Dolby publishes a list of Licensed Dolby Manufacturers for verifying that products bearing the Dolby logo and trademark are genuinely licensed.[4]
The Dolby Access app is used to start a free trial of Dolby Atmos for Headphones and to set up Dolby devices on Xbox One or Windows 10 PCs.[5]
