Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. cryptsetup is an open-source utility for setting up disk encryption based on the dm-crypt kernel module, supporting plain, LUKS, loop-AES, TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt, BitLocker and FileVault2 volumes.[1]

  2. The project does not use one licence for all code: parts are under GPL-2.0-or-later, LGPL-2.1-or-later (with the cryptsetup OpenSSL exception where applicable), Apache-2.0, CC-BY-SA-4.0 or public domain.[2]

  3. GPL-2.0-or-later in the COPYING file is the default licence for code with no explicitly defined licence.[3]

  4. The COPYING file adds a special exception that allows linking portions of the program with the OpenSSL library.[4]
