Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. Cinc describes itself as a community-built, free-as-in-freedom distribution of Chef's open source projects, highlighting "Apache 2.0, no EULA".[1]

  2. All Cinc binaries are licensed under Apache 2.0 and are free of any further EULAs or licensing.[2]

  3. Cinc distributes Cinc Client (Chef Infra Client), Cinc Workstation (Chef Workstation), Cinc Auditor (Chef InSpec) and Cinc Server (Chef Infra Server); a distribution of Chef Automate is a longer-term goal not actively in progress.[3]

  4. Most Cinc projects differ from upstream only cosmetically to comply with the Chef trademark policy, while Cinc Workstation and Cinc Server are maintained as true forks because Progress wound down the upstream omnibus builds for them.[4]

  5. The Cinc team makes no guarantee of compliance with the Chef trademark policy, works on a best-effort basis, and receives guidance from Progress and the upstream Chef community.[5]
