Licensing at a Glance

  • Open source
  1. Blender is released under the GNU General Public License, which lets anyone use it for any purpose, distribute it, study and change it, and distribute changed versions.[1]

  2. Source code developed at blender.org is licensed by default under GNU GPL version 2 or later, while some modules, such as the Cycles render engine, use Apache 2.0.[2]

  3. All components of Blender are compatible under GNU GPL version 3 or later, which is the licence used for distributing Blender binaries.[3]

  4. Artwork created with Blender, including .blend files and other data files it writes, is the creator's sole property and can be used commercially.[4]

  5. Published Python add-ons that use Blender's API must be shared under a GPL-compatible licence; they may be sold, but customers receive them under the GPL.[5]
