Avahi
The Avahi project develops Avahi, an open-source mDNS/DNS-SD service discovery system for Linux and BSD-like systems, and the related nss-mdns module. It is free software licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later.
Licensing at a Glance
- Open source
Avahi facilitates service discovery on a local network via the mDNS/DNS-SD protocol suite; it is primarily targeted at Linux, ships by default in most distributions, and is not ported to Windows.[1]
The licence file in the Avahi source repository is the GNU Lesser General Public License Version 2.1, February 1999.[2]
Avahi source files state that it may be redistributed and/or modified under the GNU LGPL, version 2.1 of the License or (at the user's option) any later version.[3]
The primary Avahi API is D-Bus, which is required for most uses, although services can also be published through XML service definitions in /etc/avahi/services.[4]
Avahi 0.8 was released on 2020-02-18, and the project's repositories moved to the avahi organisation on GitHub in December 2023.[5]
